What to do
Hiking opportunities: The trail system at Camden State Park Campground offers varied terrain for hikers of all abilities. "Great hiking and biking trails, swimming pond and right on the redwood river. The Camden Regional trail is 14 miles of paved trails between Camden State Park and Marshall, MN," writes Kyle B.
Water recreation: Explore multiple waterways at Sunrise Campground for kayaking and canoeing. "We kayaked (a short Portage) to 2 smaller lakes that had no one on them. We were able to tie our boats to a tree below our campsite and scaled up the embankment," notes Joanna B., describing the diverse paddling options.
Biking trails: The area features both paved and natural surface trails for cycling enthusiasts. "We unloaded our bikes and enjoyed the bike trails that encircle and go through Jackson," reports Peggy M. from Jackson KOA, highlighting the connectivity between campgrounds and nearby towns.
What campers like
Spacious sites: Oak Woods Campground offers generous camping spaces. "The six non-electric campsites are along one edge of the campground, across the road from the park's four camper cabins. All of the campsites are large and open and grassy. They lack privacy but have good spacing, tall trees, and lake views," writes Deanna J.
Wildlife viewing: The region supports diverse animal populations. "We saw and heard many birds including songbirds, woodpeckers, geese, turkeys, pelicans, turkey vultures, and a nesting swan. We saw deer, squirrels, chipmunks, and a mink. We heard coyotes the first night," recounts a visitor to Oak Woods Campground.
Clean facilities: Plum Creek Park Campground maintains well-kept amenities. "The park is well maintained with friendly staff. There are nice trails around the lake and more in the lower unit. There is disc golf and kayak rentals and a small store where you can buy ice, firewood, souvenirs, and an ice cream treat," reports Megan R.
What you should know
Grocery access: Stock up before arrival as shopping options are limited. "The nearest substantial grocery stores are approximately 40 minutes away," according to one Sunrise Campground visitor.
Cabin amenities: Understand what's provided in rustic cabins near Currie. "This park features great sites, trails, a swimming beach, and playground equipment. There are seasonal spots and overnight/on-the-fly spots. The spots were very spacious and the park staff was very friendly," notes Zach E. about Plum Creek Park Campground.
Reservation requirements: During peak seasons, advance booking is essential. "The camp host was very nice and accommodating. The property was well kept. Peaceful lakefront property with a playground, mini golf, and ice cream for kids (and parents)," shares Sarah N. from Sands Country Cove Campground.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Sportsman Park offers multiple play areas for children. "There is lots to keep the kids busy here! A 5k paved trail that goes around the lake connecting the campground to the park on the other side of the lake, bike rentals (using an app on your phone), the lake to fish/kayak/boat, a beach on the opposite side of the lake, playgrounds (small one in campground, medium on next to lake, and large one on other side of lake if you follow the paved trail)," details Allysa K.
Swimming options: Several campgrounds offer designated swimming areas. "The swimming pond looked nice, but it was too cold to use," reports Shelly E. about Camden State Park, while Jessica L. notes about Sunrise Campground, "Swimming was great and fishing was fun on the rocks!"
Educational opportunities: Incorporate local history into your trip. "I was here for a brief stay while on a geotour. This park has lots to offer. Great camping sites and many hiking trails. During the time I was here the wildflowers were in full bloom! Be sure to take the interpretive trail and discover all the wildflowers that grow here," suggests Charyle C.
Tips from RVers
Hookup availability: Jackson KOA provides full-service sites. "We stopped here for 2 nights on our way to South Dakota. The park is small, but very well maintained, and man, literally every person there was INCREDIBLY nice! Our site was level, easy to get into, and had a nice tree providing some shade. Water pressure was good, no issues with electric," reports Gregory L.
Campsite selection: Choose sites based on your specific needs. "We were on the Oakwood Campground for few days. Its a very quiet Campground with view of the lake," shares Peter Z., while another camper at Sunrise notes, "FHU. Large gravel sites. Good fishing."
Seasonal considerations: Cabin camping near Currie, Minnesota operates year-round with varying conditions. "It was raining super hard and this is an easy place to check in very friendly swimming pool kids. Able to camp in a quiet spot by the cornfield," explains Tammy Rae S. about Pipestone RV Campground.
