Chippewa National Forest sits at an elevation of around 1,300-1,600 feet in north-central Minnesota, spanning over 666,000 acres across Itasca, Cass, and Beltrami counties. The forest contains more than 1,300 lakes and ponds, with the Mississippi River flowing through its boundaries. Summer temperatures typically range from 65-80°F during peak camping season, while mosquitoes are most prevalent from June through August.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: Cass Lake's eastern outlet provides excellent fishing access at Bimijiwan Recreation Area. "The fish congregate here because of the rocky natural-ladder outlet of Cass Lake as its waters flow east into the Mississippi River," notes Janet R. who visited Bimijiwan Recreation Area.
Bike trail exploration: The paved Migizi and Paul Bunyan trails connect multiple camping areas. "Great for biking the Migizi and Paul Bunyan," says Levi S. from Wanaki Campground. These trails offer flat, family-friendly riding through forested sections with occasional lake views.
Explore unique ecosystems: Lake Bemidji State Park features distinct natural areas within walking distance. "The park has several different biomes - oak forests, lakeshore, bog, pine forests with lovely hike-walks that can be as long or short as you need," according to Caroline and John P. who stayed at Lake Bemidji State Park Campground.
What campers like
Spacious, private sites: Many campsites throughout the forest provide ample separation. "Sites are all wooded. We stayed in Chippewa Loop... sites are large with lots of large trees, a little on the rustic side which is what I look for," writes Rich S. who camped at Norway Beach - Wanaki Campground Loop.
Clean facilities: Leech Lake Recreation Area consistently receives praise for maintenance. "Was able to reserve a nice spot at the last minute. Campground is very well maintained and the facilities/amenities are exceptionally nice," reports Debra P. who stayed at Leech Lake Recreation Area & Campground.
Wildlife viewing: The forest offers excellent opportunities to observe native species. "Monarch butterflies everywhere and a beautiful swimming beach," notes Allison K. who visited Chippewa Campground Loop. Campers regularly report seeing bald eagles, loons, and various waterfowl across the forest.
What you should know
Water access challenges: Some boat launches have specific limitations. "Difficult to land the boat due to shallow water," warns Kimysue J. about Winnie Campground. Water levels can vary seasonally, affecting boat access at several locations.
Reservation timing: Popular sites fill months in advance during summer. "We reserved our spot 6 months in advance as they book up super fast in the short Minnesota summer months," advises TyAnn J. about Leech Lake Recreation Area.
Limited utilities: Many campgrounds lack full hookups or dump stations. "No sewage dump on site," mentions Crystal W. about Norway Beach - Chippewa Campground Loop. Several campgrounds require driving to neighboring facilities for services.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Several campgrounds feature excellent play areas for children. "The recreation area is amazing with volleyball, badminton, shuffleboard, horseshoes, tether ball and swings and play structure," shares Raak V. from Leech Lake Recreation Area.
Swimming considerations: Pet-friendly beach options require careful planning. "The camp had a nice little playground but it was closed off due to COVID. The showers and vault toilets were clean. You can put your boat in easily at the landing," explains RK M. about Leech Lake.
Safety concerns: Some campgrounds present specific hazards for young children. "The fire pit was dug down into the ground making it kind of unsafe if you had children," warns Allison K. from Stony Pt Resort and Campground. Check fire pit design when selecting sites with small children.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling: Electric sites often require significant leveling equipment. "The trailer pad was super un-level. We ended up making a Walmart run to get two more packs of leveling blocks and we use three packs of leveling blocks to make it level," reports Allison K. about Chippewa Campground Loop.
Shower facilities: Comfort varies significantly between campgrounds. "Showers are hot, but the shower rooms and bathrooms are old and worn out. Relatively clean, just..well…OLD," explains Rich S. regarding Norway Beach - Wanaki Campground Loop.
RV amenities: Some locations offer unexpected services. "Leech Lake recreation Area... has 73 sites with electric hook ups (5 are full hook ups) or if you want to tent in a private setting, they have 4 primitive walk to sites. Each site has a large picnic table and fire ring with adjustable grill," describes TyAnn J.
