Lots to do for lots of money

We stayed in one of the "deluxe" cabins which are 1 bedroom cabins with a full bathroom and a sleeping loft. The layout of the cabin is great and it includes a screened in porch. The cabin was pretty grimy though. The floors hadn't been moped in weeks, the bathroom needed to be scrubbed not just wiped down, etc. We encountered lots of maintenance issues - burned out lightbulbs, malfunctioning toilets, TV remotes missing or not working, A/C units broken. These are things that I might expect at a "typical" campground, but at $265 per night for midweek, I expected better.

The campground amenities are numerous but we found the hours to be limited and a lot of the amenities were additional costs which we thought was excessive given the price we were paying for the cabin.

    Bald Mountain Recreation Area

Amazing place to hike but campground not included.

I absolutely adore Bald Mountain Recreation area! The trails are well maintained and well marked. There is also tons of clean, easy to access lakes within the park too. Perfect for kayaking, paddle boarding, or fishing. Unfortunately there is not a camping area within the recreation area. There is however two rustic cabins that are available for rental year round. They are popular with hunters and scout troops. The cabins sleep about 10-15 people if remember correctly. They are rustic, so they don’t have electricity or heat but there is a large wood burning stove.

    Great Local Campground and Trails

Addison Oaks is a campground that features hiking and mountain biking trails, campground, cabins, disc golf course, and a lake for boating. The campground is RV and tent friendly and offers fire pits/ picnic tables. The trails are well maintained and heavily trafficked.

    Addison Oaks County Park

    Huge, clean, and great fun!

We stayed in one of the group sites and it was beautiful. Less tree cover than we would have liked, you're basically in a giant grassy field, but it was perfect for a large group. we did have to share a pavilion with a group of older campers (celebrating a 90th birthday. Our group was there to celebrate my 30th) but it turned out perfectly as they did early dinners and went to bed in their campers.

The beach is nice, a little small, but clean and fun (would be nice if your pets were allowed to swim also).

The only real negative I have is that for each group site there is a single fire pit. This made cooking, sitting around the fire, and many other things quite difficult. There IS a large charcoal grill that can be used, but if you're doing separate meals, it will be hard to coordinate.

    Port Huron KOA

Lots of activities for kids and families, beautiful trees!

lots of trees, cabins, tents and campers welcome. Many shower houses/bathrooms. Jumping pillow, tons of scheduled activities, equipment rentals, trails nearby. There is a movie theater, old one room schoolhouse, camp store, pools, number boats and putt putt. Lots of car traffic and roads are stone not paved.

    Jellystone Park North Port Huron

    Fantastic Campground for Families

What’s not to like if you have kids or grandkids. Great shallow pool, splash pad, water slides, mini-golf, trampoline area, sandy beachfront, close to Lake Huron, ice cream, pizza, stocked general store, arcade, peddle cars. I mean this place is great. For the adults the sites are large, most have water, electric AND SEWER. You can have firewood delivered to your site. The place is very well designed and laid out for easy access to everything. Slightly expensive but so worth it for families that want a low cost vacation. For those that don’t have a trailer you can bring a tent but there are beautiful small and also larger deluxe cabins.

The negatives - bad WiFi but what campground has good WiFi? Limited showers. They are nice but just not enough of them for the number of people that are here.

    KOA Campground Emmett

    Bed bugs in cabins

Avoid this KOA at all costs– bed bugs and dishonest management. Our stay at the Emmett KOA was a nightmare. The cabin we rented was infested with bed bugs. When we brought it up, the owner flat-out lied and told us they hadn’t had bed bugs in“over 13 years.” That was absolutely false. There are multiple reviews on here already citing bed bug issues, and staff members themselves admitted to us that it has been an ongoing problem. Even the pest control company they claimed to use confirmed they’ve been battling bed bugs here. Instead of taking responsibility, management hid behind their ridiculous 14-day cancellation policy and refused to refund our second night(which we didn’t stay for obvious reasons). Their“solution” was insulting: a 20% discount for a future stay(as if anyone would want to come back!) and a handful of quarters so we could attempt to kill the bugs in our belongings using their dryer. The dishonesty from Toni and her father is appalling. Any business that knowingly lies to its customers about a health and cleanliness issue this serious has no integrity. Bed bugs are not a minor inconvenience– they spread, they infest, and they follow you home. We left disgusted and disappointed, and I strongly recommend avoiding this campground if you value your health, honesty, or basic respect as a paying customer.

    Forester Park Campground

Such a loud place at night!

This is such a nice park and we really do love it, however due to quiet time not being followed, we are going to find a new one next year. Two years in a row we have not been able to sleep more than a couple of hours. This year a large group next to us had flood lights shining on our tent until 3 in the morning both nights along with loud music. No one was available to enforce the quiet hours and the lack of sleep ruined our trip. We love everything else about this place and they keep it very clean.

Guide to St. Clair

Cabin camping near St. Clair, Michigan provides access to Lake Huron's shoreline in the eastern Michigan "Thumb" region. The area experiences warm summers with temperatures averaging 75-85°F and cold winters dropping to 20-30°F. Most cabin facilities operate seasonally from April through October due to harsh winter conditions.

What to do

Lake activities: Enjoy Lake Huron's shoreline at Lakeport State Park Campground where visitors can search for unique stones along the beach. "This place is amazing! I have been faithfully coming here since I was a child. They are right on beautiful Lake Huron with a sandy beaches and clean clear water," writes Andrea W.

Rock collecting: Search for Petoskey stones on Lake Huron's rocky shoreline. One camper noted, "I have found the most beautiful Petoskey Stones at Lakeport. I have also found a large pudding stone. My husband brings his chair down to the water and I walk the short for hours and hours looking for rocks."

Mini golf and recreational activities: Multiple campgrounds feature family activities beyond water recreation. Emmett KOA offers numerous options as one visitor explained: "My daughter and I had a great time here. We went during the week so it was not packed. Nice workers help with anything asked. Food from the snack shack was good."

What campers like

Spacious cabin sites: Many campers appreciate cabins with adequate space between neighbors. At Addison Oaks County Park, one visitor shared: "Our spot #18 I felt was spacious and not to close to the people next to us and trees behind us. We had privacy and it was quiet."

Modern conveniences: Cabin facilities often include unexpected amenities. "This park has a beautiful 2.5 mile trail around the lake that makes this campground great. We brought our own kayaks but they do rent boats. We saw deer and rabbit," noted Karen C. about her Addison Oaks experience.

Multiple accommodation options: Cabins range from rustic to deluxe models. Thousand Trails St. Clair provides cabin options with varying amenities. As David B. commented, "This place is beautiful and we'll absolutely be back! The entire facility was clean and staff couldn't have been friendlier. The only downside was the abysmal Verizon signal."

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Most cabin facilities close for winter. Port Huron KOA operates from April 25 to October 26, while Thousand Trails St. Clair runs from April 30 to October 19.

Cabin sizes and occupancy: Cabin sizes vary significantly between locations. "The cabins sleep about 10-15 people if remember correctly. They are rustic, so they don't have electricity or heat but there is a large wood burning stove," explains Kate K. about the Bald Mountain Recreation Area cabins.

Booking requirements: Reservations are essential, especially for holiday weekends. "Reserve well in advance!" advises Wendy K. about Port Huron KOA, while another reviewer noted that Halloween weekend camping is popular at multiple locations.

Tips for camping with families

Look for campgrounds with dedicated children's activities: Family-oriented facilities often have scheduled programs. "We camp here often and always have a great time," reports Sandy K. about Lakeport State Park, which offers "on the weekend activities every couple hours for the kids."

Consider campground atmosphere: Some locations are quieter than others. Forester Park Campground offers a good balance as Branden B. explains: "The store, staff, and ice cream shop were great. We even bought t-shirts to commemorate! The price was reasonable for 2 nights on memorial day weekend with full hookups and 30 amps."

Pack water shoes: Lake Huron's shoreline is often rocky. "The beach on the east side of the camp borders Lake Huron. It's not much to look at with limited views and just a thin rocky shoreline," reports one Lakeport visitor, while another notes: "The beach has a lot of rocks on it not much a beach to sit on and for the kids to play."

Tips from RVers

Check utility placements: Some sites have unusual layouts. At Forester Park, one camper noted: "The sewer and water spigot were on opposite ends of our site. I had to race to Raymond's hardware in town for a 50 foot fresh water hose before they closed."

Site selection matters: Research your exact site location. "If you're in a camper I'd recommend sites 54,179,180. Those sites have a bit of a backyard to them and more space," advises Alex H. about Port Huron KOA.

Wi-Fi and connectivity concerns: Internet access varies widely. "WiFi is slow but stable. You probably won't be able to watch Netflix. AT&T service is terrible. Our friends have T-Mobile and it is very fast for them," reports Joe S. from Port Huron KOA.
