Bishop Lake Campground offers visitors a variety of cabin options ranging from rustic to modern accommodations. The campground provides beach access, boat rentals, and multiple trails for hiking and biking. Sites for cabin camping vary with some providing lake views while others offer more wooded seclusion. Most cabins require advance reservations, especially during summer months when demand peaks.
What to do
Water activities on Proud Lake: Proud Lake Recreation Area connects to the Huron River, offering excellent kayaking opportunities. "Nice camp sites with views of the lake. Big bathrooms that are super clean! Great lake to kayak on. Trails to hike on!" says Debra B. about Proud Lake Recreation Area.
Mountain biking trails: The region features extensive trail systems suitable for various skill levels. "This is a great trail for beginning backpackers or anyone looking for a quick escape to the woods. We hiked the 7.5 mile loop and stayed one night," notes Megan C. about Pinckney Recreation Area.
Family recreation: Many cabin locations include organized activities for children. "Camp Dearborn has a lot for the kids, outdoor fun, night dance parties, cement for bike rides or rollerblading," explains Melissa M. The cabin areas often feature playgrounds, mini-golf, and seasonal events within walking distance of accommodations.
What campers like
Private wooded sites: Highland Recreation Area offers secluded cabin experiences away from crowded campgrounds. "The sites are very private and spacious in the primitive camping area. The natural scenery is STUNNING with fields of flowers and trees," reports Adrienne C. about Highland State Recreation Area.
Clean facilities: Many campers note the quality of bathrooms and shower facilities at cabin locations. "You need to know that this place is so so clean! The grounds, the sites, the bathrooms and the showers are all impeccable," Laura M. says about Proud Lake Recreation Area.
Lake access: Cabins with water views remain the most popular options. "The campgrounds restrooms and showers were clean. Our campsite had a view of the lake, but no shade. The beach was nice but you have to walk a trail to get to it from the campground or drive," explains Debra B. about Bishop Lake Campground.
What you should know
Seasonal availability varies: Winter cabin options may require different preparation than summer stays. "We've been in their tent/cabins and our own RV. Great park, clean, nice swimming lakes, the teens love the canteen," notes Beth G. about Camp Dearborn, highlighting the varied accommodations through different seasons.
Bug preparation essential: Cabins in wooded areas typically require additional insect protection. "We stayed at lot M18 of the rustic site, Murray Lake. The site was large and had a picnic table and fire pit. There are TONS of mosquitos," warns Rebecca M. about Brighton Recreation Area.
Reservation difficulties: Many cabin locations book quickly during peak seasons. According to Ryan S. at Camp Dearborn, "Lots of beach area and water to fish or swim. Activities almost every night. Paddle boats, mini golf, golf, and more."
Tips for camping with families
Activity options: Choose cabins near recreation facilities for children. "This campground has a lake for swimming, water slide, arcade, boat rentals, mini golf, biking trails and fishing. Lots for kids to do... also skate park and 2 playgrounds," explains Debbie H. about Groveland Oaks County Park.
Bathroom access: Family-friendly cabins should include nearby modern restrooms. "Bath house is newly built with amazing showers including large Family/Handicap showers," John F. mentions about Proud Lake Recreation Area.
Swimming areas: Look for cabins with designated family beach access. "The beach is pretty good for swimming," Mike B. notes about Bishop Lake Campground, while Beth G. adds, "It's Connected but costs money. $15 for a 45 minute jump session. Follow on Facebook for coupons."
Tips from RVers
Site leveling challenges: Many cabin and RV sites require additional preparation. "Not all sites are level, so we were rolling around a bit. If I went there again I'd try to find a spot towards the end of the loop by the exit," advises Ryan F. about Brighton Recreation Area.
Distance to facilities: Note the walking distance between cabins and amenities. "Lights is fun activities for the kids for halloween. Lots of rules to follow, but the place has a nice atmosphere overall. Very large campgrounds... Quite the walk to the showers if you're staying up on the hill," warns Mary W. about The Holly Campground.
Electric hookups: Check power options if bringing additional equipment. According to Mary H. at Pontiac Lake Recreation Area, "If you are hoping to hook up to electrical, bring extension cords; some hook ups are exceptionally far away from the designated RV parking pad."
