Several state parks and recreation areas around New Hudson, Michigan provide rustic cabins and furnished cabin rentals with varying amenities. Pontiac Lake Recreation Area features three small cabins in the East campground area, offering a more open setting compared to the wooded West camping section. Camp Dearborn provides both rustic cabins and 16 resort cabins with more modern amenities. The cabins at Waterloo Recreation Area include options like the Southfork Rustic Cabin, which features solar lighting, a wood stove for heat, a small kitchen unit with table, and bunk beds that sleep four people. "The cabin was semi modern (solar lighting) but only a wood stove for heat. Small kitchen unit with table for eating," notes Kate K., who stayed at Waterloo's Southfork cabin. Most cabins include standard outdoor amenities like fire rings and picnic tables.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location and season. Bald Mountain Recreation Area offers two rustic cabins popular with hunters and scout troops, sleeping 10-15 people each with large wood burning stoves but no electricity. Groveland Oaks County Park cabins are generally not pet-friendly, which affects booking decisions for some visitors. According to Andrea K., "I don't believe the cabins are pet friendly though. It's probably the only reason we haven't been back." Reservations are essential, particularly during summer months when facilities like Camp Dearborn become difficult to secure. "Tough to get in but we love it," mentions Beth G. about Camp Dearborn. Winter cabin options are more limited but provide unique experiences, with some locations like Outdoor Adventures Lake Shore Resort operating year-round with over 70 cabins.

Most cabin rentals require guests to bring their own bedding, pillows, and towels, though specific amenities vary by location. Basic cooking supplies like pots, pans, and utensils are sometimes provided in more deluxe units, while rustic cabins typically offer only minimal kitchen facilities. Firewood is available for purchase at most park offices, including Holly Recreation Area and Bishop Lake Campground. Visitors should check specific cabin listings before arrival, as amenities can differ significantly even within the same park. Some negative experiences have occurred when expectations weren't met, as one Camp Dearborn visitor discovered when arriving to find "a dirty cabin with a concrete floor and nothing to sleep on." Grocery stores and convenience shops are accessible within short driving distances from most cabin locations, allowing campers to stock up on supplies as needed.

Bathrooms were dated and we arrived Monday after Labor Day so I can't judge them. They had a FULL HOUSE on Labor Day per the front gate. I was very impressed there was no garbage at campsites and picked up very well.

GREAT biking trails you can catch on premise and bike over to Kensington and to the charming town of Milford

      Island Lake Recreation Area

      Hidden Canoe Camps

Island Lake Recreation Area is home to two Huron River Canoe Camps. The sites are boat-in only (!) meaning you must haul any and all gear in a kayak or canoe for your stay. The sites, Canoe Camp #1 and #2, can be only be reserved by calling or visiting the main office.

This is an awesome place to stay, especially if you live in the area, as it provides a backcountry, boat-in camping experience very close to town. The sites each feature a fire ring and picnic table. Canoe #1 sports a floating dock to tie up boats. There is also a vault toilet, and firewood provided for both sites to share, as well recycling and trash cans.

The sites and common area (toilet and garbage cans) are connected by short trails and you may, once in awhile, hear the folks at the site next to you. Thankfully, In my experience, people have always been friendly and respectful.

Pretty park with several well marked trails. We stayed in the Maple loop which had several semi-private sites screened from neighbors by trees. I think site #1 was one of the roomiest and prettiest. The bathrooms were clean. There were several playgrounds, bench swings, play fields and even a basketball court. The ADA sites had pavement surrounding the fire rings and space at the picnic tables for a wheel chair.

Sugarloaf Campground — Waterloo Recreation Area

      A Wonderful Winter Getaway

We stayed in the Southfork Rustic Cabin at the end of Feb and it was lovely much needed get away. The cabin was semi modern (solar lighting) but only a wood stove for heat. Small kitchen unit with table for eating. You had to hike in about a quarter mile to get there, and it sleeps four people with two bunk beds. There is an outside vault toilet behind the cabin. Lots of trails connecting the cabin to the rest of the park. Cheap too! Only $68 per night.

      Bald Mountain Recreation Area

Amazing place to hike but campground not included.

I absolutely adore Bald Mountain Recreation area! The trails are well maintained and well marked. There is also tons of clean, easy to access lakes within the park too. Perfect for kayaking, paddle boarding, or fishing. Unfortunately there is not a camping area within the recreation area. There is however two rustic cabins that are available for rental year round. They are popular with hunters and scout troops. The cabins sleep about 10-15 people if remember correctly. They are rustic, so they don’t have electricity or heat but there is a large wood burning stove.

      Seven Lakes State Park Campground

      Fab beach

This is a fabulous campground! There are over 20 sites, about half of which are located lake side (not directly on the lake, but there are little paths that lead you there and you can somewhat see the water from these sites.) There is a boat launch on one end of campground and the amazing beach on the other. The water is clear and warm (perfect lake for swimming) and there is both sand and grassy areas on the fairly large beach. The beach also offers picnic tables and benches. The only negative aspect I can see about this campground is that the sites are right on top of each other, so if you have a loud group or a generator next to you, it is noisy. But most campgrounds have sites set real close together, so you will find this pretty much everywhere. Def camp here! About an hours drive from a Pictured Rocks National Park. There are no showers or running water. Camp hosts were very nice, helpful, & welcoming.

      Sleepy Hollow State Park Campground

      Beautiful Park

Rangers working the area are very friendly. Many options to choose from in terms of camping, from rustic, tent to fully functional cabin lodging. The park is very large, so it is always good to have a vehicle able to drive to the trails and beach. Campsites are decent sized, can fit probably 3 four person tents per site, which includes a concrete firepit and picnic table. In the north campsites there is a lot of tree covering, and there are a lot of walnut trees that were shedding a lot this time of the year. Bathrooms are well spaced between the campsites you, and have showers along with some vending machines outside of them. Spigots are scattered throughout and are very accessible. Be sure to bring at least 100 feet of extension chord if you want electricity, because the power ports are not as accessible from some areas. Overall very pleasant campground.

    Guide to New Hudson

Bishop Lake Campground offers visitors a variety of cabin options ranging from rustic to modern accommodations. The campground provides beach access, boat rentals, and multiple trails for hiking and biking. Sites for cabin camping vary with some providing lake views while others offer more wooded seclusion. Most cabins require advance reservations, especially during summer months when demand peaks.

    What to do

Water activities on Proud Lake: Proud Lake Recreation Area connects to the Huron River, offering excellent kayaking opportunities. "Nice camp sites with views of the lake. Big bathrooms that are super clean! Great lake to kayak on. Trails to hike on!" says Debra B. about Proud Lake Recreation Area.

Mountain biking trails: The region features extensive trail systems suitable for various skill levels. "This is a great trail for beginning backpackers or anyone looking for a quick escape to the woods. We hiked the 7.5 mile loop and stayed one night," notes Megan C. about Pinckney Recreation Area.

Family recreation: Many cabin locations include organized activities for children. "Camp Dearborn has a lot for the kids, outdoor fun, night dance parties, cement for bike rides or rollerblading," explains Melissa M. The cabin areas often feature playgrounds, mini-golf, and seasonal events within walking distance of accommodations.

    What campers like

Private wooded sites: Highland Recreation Area offers secluded cabin experiences away from crowded campgrounds. "The sites are very private and spacious in the primitive camping area. The natural scenery is STUNNING with fields of flowers and trees," reports Adrienne C. about Highland State Recreation Area.

Clean facilities: Many campers note the quality of bathrooms and shower facilities at cabin locations. "You need to know that this place is so so clean! The grounds, the sites, the bathrooms and the showers are all impeccable," Laura M. says about Proud Lake Recreation Area.

Lake access: Cabins with water views remain the most popular options. "The campgrounds restrooms and showers were clean. Our campsite had a view of the lake, but no shade. The beach was nice but you have to walk a trail to get to it from the campground or drive," explains Debra B. about Bishop Lake Campground.

    What you should know

Seasonal availability varies: Winter cabin options may require different preparation than summer stays. "We've been in their tent/cabins and our own RV. Great park, clean, nice swimming lakes, the teens love the canteen," notes Beth G. about Camp Dearborn, highlighting the varied accommodations through different seasons.

Bug preparation essential: Cabins in wooded areas typically require additional insect protection. "We stayed at lot M18 of the rustic site, Murray Lake. The site was large and had a picnic table and fire pit. There are TONS of mosquitos," warns Rebecca M. about Brighton Recreation Area.

Reservation difficulties: Many cabin locations book quickly during peak seasons. According to Ryan S. at Camp Dearborn, "Lots of beach area and water to fish or swim. Activities almost every night. Paddle boats, mini golf, golf, and more."

    Tips for camping with families

Activity options: Choose cabins near recreation facilities for children. "This campground has a lake for swimming, water slide, arcade, boat rentals, mini golf, biking trails and fishing. Lots for kids to do... also skate park and 2 playgrounds," explains Debbie H. about Groveland Oaks County Park.

Bathroom access: Family-friendly cabins should include nearby modern restrooms. "Bath house is newly built with amazing showers including large Family/Handicap showers," John F. mentions about Proud Lake Recreation Area.

Swimming areas: Look for cabins with designated family beach access. "The beach is pretty good for swimming," Mike B. notes about Bishop Lake Campground, while Beth G. adds, "It's Connected but costs money. $15 for a 45 minute jump session. Follow on Facebook for coupons."

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Many cabin and RV sites require additional preparation. "Not all sites are level, so we were rolling around a bit. If I went there again I'd try to find a spot towards the end of the loop by the exit," advises Ryan F. about Brighton Recreation Area.

Distance to facilities: Note the walking distance between cabins and amenities. "Lights is fun activities for the kids for halloween. Lots of rules to follow, but the place has a nice atmosphere overall. Very large campgrounds... Quite the walk to the showers if you're staying up on the hill," warns Mary W. about The Holly Campground.

Electric hookups: Check power options if bringing additional equipment. According to Mary H. at Pontiac Lake Recreation Area, "If you are hoping to hook up to electrical, bring extension cords; some hook ups are exceptionally far away from the designated RV parking pad."
