    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Several cabin accommodations dot the landscape of Waterloo Recreation Area near Jackson. Portage Lake Campground provides modest cabins with electricity, while Holiday RV Campground offers slightly more upscale rental units with greater privacy. Basic amenities typically include electric lighting, picnic tables outside each unit, and access to nearby shower facilities. Most sites feature paved parking areas and fire rings for outdoor cooking. "Clean and well maintained. A few bathrooms are located around the campground. The spaces are generous and the majority have electricity only," noted one visitor about Waterloo Portage Lake Modern.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Waterloo Sugarloaf Modern and Apple Creek Campground & RV Park both provide cabin rentals with varying levels of amenities. Many campgrounds with cabins are open seasonally, with most operating between April and October, though some like W.J. Hayes State Park Campground remain open year-round. Pet policies vary by location, with most allowing leashed pets but requiring them to be supervised. One camper shared that Apple Creek is "a well kept campground that has lots of trees (shady sites) and some nice amenities," making it suitable for family cabin stays.

Most cabins include beds but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Kitchen facilities range from minimal to nonexistent, with most cooking expected to happen at outdoor fire pits or grills. Several campgrounds like Holiday RV have small on-site markets for basic provisions. Refrigerators are uncommon in more rustic units, so coolers are recommended. Cabin visitors typically need to use shared bathhouse facilities for showers and restrooms, though these are generally well-maintained and cleaned regularly according to reviews.

      HUGH MUNICIPAL CAMPGROUND

They offer campsites full hookups pet friendly

They offer electric only no pets they offer campsites no pets.

They have a tent only section.

They have a beach, tennis courts, children's playground, rustic cabins, they have a recreation field Kids Activities arts and crafts!!! They have 16 resort cabins, this place is HUGH

Bathrooms were dated and we arrived Monday after Labor Day so I can't judge them. They had a FULL HOUSE on Labor Day per the front gate. I was very impressed there was no garbage at campsites and picked up very well.

GREAT biking trails you can catch on premise and bike over to Kensington and to the charming town of Milford

      Island Lake Recreation Area

      Hidden Canoe Camps

Island Lake Recreation Area is home to two Huron River Canoe Camps. The sites are boat-in only (!) meaning you must haul any and all gear in a kayak or canoe for your stay. The sites, Canoe Camp #1 and #2, can be only be reserved by calling or visiting the main office.

This is an awesome place to stay, especially if you live in the area, as it provides a backcountry, boat-in camping experience very close to town. The sites each feature a fire ring and picnic table. Canoe #1 sports a floating dock to tie up boats. There is also a vault toilet, and firewood provided for both sites to share, as well recycling and trash cans.

The sites and common area (toilet and garbage cans) are connected by short trails and you may, once in awhile, hear the folks at the site next to you. Thankfully, In my experience, people have always been friendly and respectful.

Sugarloaf Campground — Waterloo Recreation Area

      A Wonderful Winter Getaway

We stayed in the Southfork Rustic Cabin at the end of Feb and it was lovely much needed get away. The cabin was semi modern (solar lighting) but only a wood stove for heat. Small kitchen unit with table for eating. You had to hike in about a quarter mile to get there, and it sleeps four people with two bunk beds. There is an outside vault toilet behind the cabin. Lots of trails connecting the cabin to the rest of the park. Cheap too! Only $68 per night.

      Harrison Lake State Park Campground

      Quiet place to get away

We have been here a few times. Really enjoy the secluded sites and the lake. It’s a small campground but it’s clean and quiet. Most sites don’t have water hookups but they do have electric. There isn’t much to do outside of the campground but there is a nice lake with canoe and kayak rentals. Very pet friendly and even has a dog beach.

      Lake Hudson Recreation Area

Beautiful Nature, Dark Sky Rustic Camping

Lake Hudson is a dark sky preserve full of trees, nature and a beautiful lake. The camping sites come with an electric plug in, a nice fire ring and a picnic table. They are cute sites. Most are not by the lake. There is a dumpster. The facilities are rustic. The facilities are port a potty type with wooden walls and cement floor. No showers. A hand pump well for water. The swimming part of the lake requires a drive. The Lake is beautiful with a sand beach, no wake boating and grills. However it is rustic so there is goose poo. The woods are beautiful. There is hunting. We had heard that some people partied there but the night we were there it was quiet and people were respectful. We had a beautiful fire and dutch oven dinner. We saw one cute racoon who ran away when I reacted. We were worried about mosquitos but we only saw one.

      Sleepy Hollow State Park Campground

      Beautiful Park

Rangers working the area are very friendly. Many options to choose from in terms of camping, from rustic, tent to fully functional cabin lodging. The park is very large, so it is always good to have a vehicle able to drive to the trails and beach. Campsites are decent sized, can fit probably 3 four person tents per site, which includes a concrete firepit and picnic table. In the north campsites there is a lot of tree covering, and there are a lot of walnut trees that were shedding a lot this time of the year. Bathrooms are well spaced between the campsites you, and have showers along with some vending machines outside of them. Spigots are scattered throughout and are very accessible. Be sure to bring at least 100 feet of extension chord if you want electricity, because the power ports are not as accessible from some areas. Overall very pleasant campground.

      Cold Brook County Park

      Nice little county park!

29 campsites pretty close together with old growth trees interspersed around the campground. Fishing pier and boating, playground area, and beach. No longer has primitive camping. Some hiking trails...short. is next to a busy road, so traffic all night. Staff was great! Showers and bathrooms cleaned multiple times a day. Pet friendly. Would stay here again!

    Guide to Jackson

Cabins near Jackson, Michigan provide convenient access to over 20,000 acres of protected land within Waterloo Recreation Area. The region sits at an elevation between 900-1,100 feet and experiences four distinct seasons with summer temperatures averaging 75-85°F, ideal for lake activities. Winter cabin rentals remain available at select locations when temperatures drop to the 20-30°F range.

    What to do

Kayaking on chain lakes: Bishop Lake Campground offers excellent water activities including kayaking on interconnected lakes. "Nice walking trails. Our favorite was the lake for kayaking," notes a camper who appreciated the accessible waterways.

Star gazing at dark sky preserve: Lake Hudson Recreation Area provides exceptional night sky viewing from cabin areas. "The best part of this campground is the stars at night! This is a dark sky preserve campground and the stars are the show. We stayed here at the end of the perseid meteor showers and saw several falling meteors," reports a visitor.

Mountain biking on trails: The cabin areas near Pinckney Recreation Area connect to extensive trail systems. "We loved the trails for Mountain Bikes that are close to the Campsite! They are super fun!!" shares an enthusiastic rider who accessed trails directly from their accommodation.

    What campers like

Private, wooded settings: Apple Creek Campground & RV Park cabins offer secluded natural surroundings. "This is a well kept campground that has lots of trees (shady sites) and some nice amenities for kids," explains a cabin guest who valued the privacy.

Off-season quiet: Winter cabin rentals at select locations provide solitude. "Had the pleasure of visiting first weekend in February, on the coldest weekend of the year! Nice little cabin set in about 800' from where you park. It has a table, wood stove, and 4 sets of bunks in a back room," notes a winter visitor to Waterloo Sugarloaf Modern.

Lake access: Several cabin options provide water access for fishing and boating. "We stayed for 2 weeks, and will return. There is a small camp store and a very nice pool. Easy access off of I-94. Campground is surrounded by farming/countryside. Close to nice small towns and Ann Arbor," shares a visitor to Holiday RV Campground.

    What you should know

Cabin water access varies: Many rentals near Jackson require bringing water or walking to central locations. "This mid-evil hand pump should have been scraped years ago and is in need of some major repair work," warns a camper about Lake Hudson's rustic water facilities.

Electrical connections: When renting cabins, check electrical setup details. "You will need the long cord if you plan on using electricity," advises a lakeside camper at Lake Hudson Recreation Area who discovered the outlets were positioned farther from sites than expected.

Seasonal availability: W.J. Hayes State Park Campground cabins require advance planning during summer. "Hayes State Park is a great little spot in the Irish Hills. The ranger office was nice, clean, and had lots of information ready! Firewood and ice are available there as well for reasonable prices," reports a visitor.

    Tips for camping with families

Beach and playground access: Family-friendly cabin options include those near swim areas. "We have been coming here for years. We like to stay in the north campground because most of the sites are black topped. Lake is down the hill from the campground. It has a nice beach! Our grandkids love the play area!" shares a regular at Waterloo Portage Lake.

Educational activities: Select cabin rentals offer ranger-led programs. "The park workers walk around and tell you about the activities they have that day. We enjoyed our stay there is alot to do," notes a visitor about family programming.

Spacious sites for multiple tents: Waterloo Sugarloaf Modern cabins and campsites accommodate larger family groups. "It is usually easy to get multiple sites next to each other with reservations. There is a decent sandy beach here with a playground and volleyball net," explains a regular family camper.

    Tips from RVers

Winter accessibility: Year-round cabin rentals provide alternative lodging when RV camping isn't practical. "Spent 4 nights and 5 days camping with my husband and 2 kids. We had fun and the kids had a blast. They rode bikes around the loop and loved swimming and the playground," notes a family who appreciated the amenities.

Site selection for privacy: Specific cabin locations offer more seclusion. "The property is very well maintained with a nice park and clean bathrooms. The campground has some nice full-grown trees, but isn't extremely wooded. The trees offer shade, but are spaced out enough that a group can pull their campers around for privacy," advises a Waterloo Sugarloaf visitor.

Dedicated parking areas: Many cabin rentals include improved parking spaces. "Our site was a little small for our 38foot - we had to go sideways which opened us up to other campers. Not my favorite. No WiFi or sprint service," cautions a visitor, highlighting the importance of checking site dimensions.
