Michigan's Cohoctah area offers access to both modern and rustic camping experiences within a 20-mile radius. Located in Livingston County at an elevation of approximately 900 feet, the region features gently rolling terrain with multiple small lakes and ponds. Seasonal temperatures range from summer highs in the 80s to winter lows below freezing, making April through October the primary camping season for most visitors.
What to do
Mountain biking trails: Brighton Recreation Area has an extensive trail network for bikers of various skill levels. "The trails are well maintained and offer varied terrain. The best site to get is site B3. It was perfect," notes a visitor to Blind Lake Rustic Campground.
Water activities beyond swimming: Multiple lakes offer fishing and boating opportunities. "The campgrounds restrooms and showers were clean. Our campsite had a view of the lake, but no shade. The beach was nice but you have to walk a trail to get to it from the campground or drive. Nice walking trails. Our favorite was the lake for kayaking," reports a camper from Bishop Lake Campground.
Winter camping options: Several campgrounds remain open year-round. "I have been visited bishop lake family campground since I was a little girl. My mom brought us here every summer to have the time of our lives! She came here every summer with HER mom before that! So on and so on. We now officially have 5 generations of bishop lake lovers!" shares a regular visitor.
What campers like
Secluded sites: Holly State Recreation Area offers sites with more privacy than typical campgrounds. "We stayed in the Maple loop which had several semi-private sites screened from neighbors by trees. I think site #1 was one of the roomiest and prettiest," notes a visitor to Holly State Recreation Area.
Clean facilities: Most campgrounds maintain well-kept bathrooms and showers. "The bathrooms are clean and the showers were warm," mentions a Bishop Lake Campground visitor. Another camper at Proud Lake Recreation Area adds, "You need to know that this place is so so clean! The grounds, the sites, the bathrooms and the showers are all impeccable."
Variety of accommodation types: Glamping close to Cohoctah, Michigan extends beyond canvas tents to include cabin options. "We've state at this campground on and off for roughly 3 weeks staying mostly at the Cedar cabin but we also tent camped as well. The staff is amazing, the campground is well maintained and quiet."
What you should know
Seasonal variations in crowds: Summer months bring significantly more visitors, especially on weekends. "We stayed during very hot weather at the beginning of July 2020. I wanted to visit Potter Park Zoo so we choose to stay at Sleepy Hollow for a few days. Our site backed up to trees and I can't recall seeing our neighbors to the left or right," reports a visitor to Sleepy Hollow State Park.
Site selection matters: Campgrounds vary in privacy levels between sites. "Nice campground. Paved sites. Some are pretty secluded. Downside is that the campground and stuff to do, are far apart. Bring a bike or drive. Beach is nice. Has a water park on the lake," advises a camper.
Bug preparation essential: Mosquitoes can be problematic in certain areas. "The camping area sits on an inaccessible lake with a marsh area. When we rolled in the first thing we noticed was that everyone had screen houses set up. We didn't have anything but our tent and a hammock with a big net so everyone got bitten up while cooking and hanging out by the fire."
Tips for camping with families
Multiple playgrounds: Many campgrounds offer dedicated children's areas. "My family took our RV camping here for a week here. It was very nice, we had so much fun. The bathrooms and showers were clean, there were a lot of activities for the whole family, and the camp site was nice and shaded," shares a visitor to Holly State Recreation Area.
Water attractions for kids: Beyond natural swimming areas, some parks offer additional water features. "We took a chance coming out here to kick off the summer as a family and couldn't be more please with the staff and the grounds! So much for the family to do!" notes a visitor to Taylor's Beach Campground.
Halloween events: Special seasonal activities run at many campgrounds. "Proud lake is very nice, some other campers arnt so happy campers an complain, but other than that a nice place, we've been going to halloween camping for the past 2 years, decorate your site and the kids get dressed up an go trick or treating in camp, theres a costume contest and hay rides, fun family atmosphere."
Tips from RVers
Extension cord requirements: Some electrical hookups may be distant from sites. "Most electrical posts are designed to accommodate at least 2 adjoining lots, and as many as 4. This in itself is not a concern until you realize the posts are way too far away to reach without an extension."
Site leveling challenges: Prepare for uneven ground at rustic sites. "Our site wasn't level, so we were rolling around a bit. If I went there again I'd try to find a spot towards the end of the loop by the exit. These sites were higher and some of them were private."
Parking access considerations: Some sites have challenging angles for larger vehicles. "We had a great weekend even with out Truck or treating. Due to Covid-19. But still able to have a great weekend with family," reports a visitor to Groveland Oaks County Park.
