Green Lake Rustic Campground — Waterloo Recreation Area

    Great Site

We stayed the weekend at greenlake rustic, the access road into the Campground is a nice 1/2 ish mile in.  We were on sites 5 and 3. Both sites seemed larger then most suburban house lots. Site 5 had a decent view of the lake, Site 3 had odd fire pit placement under 2 trees. Even though the sites were large they didn't have much for privacy in between sites.

Overall, it was a quiet stay. The freeway is on the other side of the lake, but it didn't bother us. At night it was like white noise.

The Campground has a small boat dock, no swimming area. We checked out half moon lake, wasn't really impressed, was told sugarloaf but its only for sugarloaf campers.  We were then directed to Portage lake beach, which was a larger beach but it was really silty.

Green lakes vault toilets had nice motion sensor lights in them. The hand pump took a long time to get going.

We went on both east and west sides of the waterloo-pickney trail, located off the Campground access road. I believe it was the west trail after Cassidy road we experienced some steep inclines.

We also were able to see some awesome stars at night

FYI sugarloaf and portage both have firewood for sale $6.

    Sleepy Hollow State Park Campground

    Absolutely great time!

Walk-in site F was literally the perfect campsite. Fully secluded (except a few curious hikers who stopped in around lunchtime), easy 1 mile walk from parking lot, can kayak right up to it on the calm lake, hammock posts, picnic table, fire pit, gorgeous night sky views. A+ and 10/10

    Maple River Campground

    Fun Adventure

September 9th 2017 I hosted a Kayak/Canoe trip and we used this location for our landing and camping. It was a great little location that even had some river side cabins you could rent.

The amount of nature was overwhelming. Lots of turtles and ducks to be seen.

The staff was friendly and aviable when needed, was very welcoming as they did live on site. I will be returning to this location.

Waterloo Sugarloaf Modern — Waterloo Recreation Area

    Great Family Campground

This is a nice place to camp if you dont mind the bigger parks. There is electrical on each site and is mostly a place for campers and RVs. There are fire pits and picnic tables at each site. It is usually easy to get multiple sites next to each other with reservations.

There is a decent sandy beach here with a playground and volleyball net. Also in the park are some small dirt trails for hiking and biking. There are enough loops here to go for walks as well.

Most of the sites are in the sun, but there are a few sites with more shade and tree cover.

Hidden Ridge RV Resort, A Sun RV Resort

    Large RV resort!

We had a great time camping at Hidden Ridge. Amenities were great, everything well kept and clean. This park is very big. Seems to have a lot of seasonal campers there but still spots for the vacationers too. The pool was nice, and the playground very fun for kids. Sunday morning they have Cinnamon Roll delivery to your campsite! Only a couple of negatives to report there isn’t much close the the campground at all. Like the closest gas station is 15 miles. Not really any fast food restaurants either. Obviously not a deal breaker, but just something to be prepared for. And there is a snack bar at the campground, but for other things you’ll have to go further out. Second, I found it odd the there isn’t trash pickup at the site. And the only trash bin we could find was at the entrance of the grounds (which was quite a distance from 241 our site). Just seems places this big and at this price range offer trash pick up at the site. Again, not a deal breaker but just a nuisance I guess. Would definitely recommend and would return to stay if in the area.

    Sleepy Hollow State Park Campground

    Poorly Run

I have stayed there twice in the last two years. Its poorly maintained especially for the cost of the site per night. I used this park regularly 20 years ago. Much of it can be blamed on DNR cuts but some of it is poor management. I was also offended by the double standard of rules enforcement. There is s group called “Friends of Sleepy Hollow”, who proudly display their signs in front of their motor homes. I suspect this was a well intentioned organization. But their members get a pass from the ranger regardind quiet hours, yet jumps at any of their concerns. The whole park is over grown and understaffed. I have had much better camp sites in rustic campgrounds around the state.

Bruin Lake Campground — Pinckney Recreation Area

    Hike-in campsite option

We took advantage of one of the hike in only areas along the waterloo trail. Trails were not very clearly marked and part of the hike was on the road. No facilities at the site. Our hike out we shared the trail with horses which was not ideal as our backpacks often scared the horses so needed to always talk so they knew we were just humans. There is a Horse camp not too far from the hike-in campground which is reported to have running water. The trails were not very easy to follow to locate the horse camp, so we didn't end up making it over there and instead collected water from a nearby pond and filtered it.

Guide to Bellevue

Fort Custer Recreation Area offers diverse outdoor activities within a 3,000-acre natural setting near Bellevue, Michigan. The park features three interconnected lakes spanning more than 200 acres, with shoreline access points for watercraft launches. Camping options range from traditional tent sites to upscale glamping accommodations, with most sites available from early spring through late fall.

What to Do

Fishing opportunities: At Ionia State Recreation Area, visitors can fish in a no-wake lake ideal for relaxed angling. "There are three lakes for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing," notes one visitor, while another mentions that the lake is "crystal clear meaning you can see the sand/pebble bottom."

Mountain biking trails: Fort Custer Recreation Area offers extensive trail networks for cycling enthusiasts. "We camped and rode (again) at Fort Custer. We've been here 2x before (once in a cabin and once in tents) and this has now officially become a favorite," writes Joel K. The trails accommodate various skill levels with marked routes.

Water recreation: Multiple lakes provide swimming and non-motorized boating options. "Sessions Lake or even to the peninsula to fish from dock. This is also a great place to watch sunsets," reports Nick B. from Ionia Recreation Area, adding that the beach area is a short walk or bike ride from most campsites.

What Campers Like

Privacy between sites: Many campgrounds offer natural buffers between camping areas. "We just stayed at 51 and it is extremely secluded! We had an amazing time tent camping it was so quiet!" reports Hannah from Fort Custer. This separation provides a more private outdoor experience even at busier campgrounds.

Stargazing conditions: The minimal light pollution creates exceptional night sky viewing. Janet N. from Ionia State Recreation Area noted, "I loved the lack of lights in the park at night making for a beautiful night sky." These dark sky conditions are ideal for astronomy enthusiasts.

Variety of accommodation options: From traditional camping to glamping in Bellevue, Michigan, visitors have numerous choices. At Michawana Campground, "This campsite is perfect for children! The workers are the nicest people I have encountered at a campsite. They have a lake/beach for swimming, kayaks, paddle boards, and canoes to use at the lake."

What You Should Know

Site selection considerations: Some campgrounds have variable site qualities that affect camping comfort. At Welcome Woods Family Campground, "They offer both rustic and water and electric sites. This is a family campground and my kids loved the playground!" notes one visitor. Research specific site numbers before booking.

Seasonal operation: Most campgrounds operate on limited schedules. "Most glamping sites in the region operate seasonally from April through October," with Welcome Woods Family Campground specifically running "May 1 - Oct 15" according to their information.

Utility access limitations: Electrical hookups vary significantly between sites. At Fort Custer, "Sites have electrical service only. Must use the dump station," explains VB S. Extension cords may be necessary at some parks where power outlets are positioned between multiple sites.

Tips for Camping with Families

Playgrounds and recreation: Tyler Creek provides dedicated play areas for children. "Great customer service and friendly faces. Other families we met at the pool were super friendly and inviting like we had been coming here for years," reports Melissa L. These facilities offer entertainment options during downtime at camp.

Swimming areas: Several parks maintain dedicated swimming beaches with safety features. At Michawana Campground, Bailey C. found "a lake/beach for swimming, kayaks, paddle boards, and canoes to use at the lake. They also have a massive slip 'n slide, zip lining, and a rock climbing wall."

Insect preparation: Bug activity can be significant during certain seasons. "Lots need mowing so lots of bugs, bring insect repellent," advises Cathy Y. about Fort Custer. Packing appropriate repellents and protective clothing helps ensure comfort during peak insect seasons.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Hidden Ridge RV Resort provides full-service sites for larger vehicles. "All sites include a concrete pad, fire ring and full hook-up. 120/150 amp," reports Kathleen D. This makes it suitable for RVers requiring complete utility connections.

Dump station logistics: Plan for potential wait times at shared facilities. Bob B. notes about Fort Custer, "Since there are no water or sewer hook ups, lines at the dump/fill station can get long." Morning departure times often create the longest queues.

Site leveling considerations: Terrain varies significantly between parks. "The sites are large, lots of old growth trees," and many campsites require some leveling adjustments for RVs and trailers due to natural ground contours.
