Fossil hunting along shorelines: At Westmoreland State Park Campground, visitors can search for prehistoric treasures. "We came from Pa/De and wanted to look for sharks teeth. It was beautiful here so we decided to stay the night. We only have a small tent and some snacks. Lol but we are having an amazing time," says Sara A.
Kayaking on multiple waterways: The region offers numerous paddling opportunities with varying difficulty levels. At Martinak State Park Campground, campers can access river trails directly from the park. "Campsites and bathrooms are clean. Beautiful waterfront great for kayaking and water sports. No real hiking trails. Overall small quiet campground," notes Laura M.
Multi-day city exploration: The Port Republic area serves as a convenient base for exploring multiple cities. "We took the 20 minute drive. They have a nice looking pool area, but it was too cold. The shop was cute and staff nice. Sites were pretty level. Be weary of decent highway noise, but easily drowned out with the AC," explains Joe R. from Cherry Hill Park.
What campers like
Private tent areas: At Matoaka Beach Cottages, tent campers appreciate the secluded spots. "We tent camped at Matoka Cabins and it was a beautiful Peaceful camping trip! Out spot was very private and you could see the bay and hear the waves. We will definitely be back for another visit. The owners are very nice," says Courtney K.
Yurt camping options: Port Republic, Maryland area offers several yurt camping alternatives. Westmoreland State Park Campground provides yurts with basic amenities. "The tent sites are awesome and mine have always been pretty private feeling despite being somewhat near others. Bathhouses are always SO clean and heated in the winter," comments RL.
Electric sites with water views: Tuckahoe State Park Campground provides waterfront camping with hookups. "I love this campground! Great hiking, biking, kayaking and fishing. They have a really nice playground for kids (which is separate from the campground). You can rent kayaks, canoes and fishing gear. The camp sites are spaced out nicely," explains Jessica K.
What you should know
Season variations: Most campgrounds around Port Republic operate from March through November. "We went in March 2018 for my birthday, when it was still VERY cold, but had a wonderful time. The beaches and trails seem so much more peaceful and untouched this time of year. Definitely gets windy near the river. Nothing a big pot of camp soup or chili can't help!" shares RL from Westmoreland State Park.
Bathroom facilities: Louise F. Cosca Regional Park offers basic but functional facilities. "Bathrooms are clean, their are 2 stalls and 1 shower, cleaned daily by park rangers. Raccoons run wild at night flipping trash can lids on your campsite hunting for food. Use repel spray to keep the raccoons off your site," advises Tye S.
Limited cell service: Connectivity varies across campgrounds. "Cell service (T-Mobile) was spotty at times, bathhouses were fine, and the ranger was on patrol regularly. We felt very safe!" reports Shanna S. about her stay at Martinak State Park Campground.
Tips for camping with families
Multiple activities within walking distance: Solomons Navy Recreation Area offers extensive recreation options. "Great military campground with spacious sites, and anything else you could want! Beach, 3 pools, marina, what else do you need," exclaims Sharon F.
Playgrounds throughout parks: Families appreciate dedicated children's areas. "They have a nice area for kids (pool, playground, jumping pillow, basketball courts, giant chess, etc). If you get an area to back into it'll be more secluded, but the pull through spots offer no privacy," mentions Elise M. about Washington DC/Capitol KOA.
Junior ranger programs: Several parks offer educational opportunities for children. "We took about 30 women camping here at the end of April and had the best time together. So thankful for state parks that are gorgeous and full of adventure!" reports Katie T. about Westmoreland State Park.
Tips from RVers
Site selection matters: Pohick Bay Campground offers varied sites. "Sites are spacious and decently level (depends on the site I'm sure). Plenty of playgrounds and trails nearby to keep the family busy. Amenities and such are what you'd expect - clean but not new. We would definitely stay again," advises Kristen M.
Advance reservations essential: Secure your spot early, especially for holidays and weekends. "Check out your site before booking, some sites are steep but spacious. Close to town but far enough to enjoy yourself. Bathrooms are clean and have decent showers," recommends Ben S. from Louise F. Cosca Regional Park.
Leveling challenges: Be prepared for uneven surfaces. "This campground is about 25 sites. Only 5 sites have electric (2, 5, 18, 24, 25) but all 25 sites have water hookup. 6 of the 25 sites are unleveled so tent camping is probably the only option. This is not big rig friendly but there are pull through sites but the roads are very narrow," warns Tye S.
