Percy Quin State Park — Percy Quinn State Park

    Will camp here again

I am a beginning solo tent camper with a lot to learn. Percy Quin is a nice state run campground. Some sites are closer together and less shaded than others. It rained and most sites seem to have decent drainage with no puddles. Not all sites have grills or fire pits. There is a laundry room and the bathrooms next to that are air conditioned-not sure about all of them.

    Spot 124 is great!

We stayed at site 124 in “Bottomland” and we loved it. New “deck” with room for a rug, fire pit, and chairs. The deck also has a picnic table with a fire pit just off the edge. There’s a creek that ran behind the spot that kept my husband busy. The only downside is that the water and electricity plug are pretty far from your camper- you may need to pack your extender.

    Tickfaw State Park Campground

True Louisiana atmosphere, fun for every age!

Every time we visit this park (which is a lot) we are able to have a new and fun adventure!

When my children were very young. This was one of the first places in the area to have a splash park for my children to run and play while staying cool in the south Louisiana heat.

Move up a few years, Tickfaw has provided myself and children with hours of fun, safe and informative hikes along the well maintained boardwalks through South Louisiana swamps.

As my children have grown we have still been able to explore the park further by utilizing the campgrounds! The tent camping section has defined/ private tent sites with picnic tables, and parking next to each site. The Rv park also boost a fun and family atmosphere, with fishing ponds, bike riding, canoeing, and primitive hiking. All with clean and air conditioned restroom facilities easily accessible to all sites.

    Clear Springs Recreation Area

A great little campground for RVs or tents

Clear Springs Recreation Area, located in the Homochitto National Forest near Roxie, Ms, is probably one of my favorite campgrounds within 3 hours from New Orleans. It's located in a beautiful section of the forest, complete with rolling hills and a lake.

The primitive tent only sites are located about half a mile up the road from the main campground, providing a substantial distance between you and the RVs. The dirt road to the tent only sites is lined with individual camp sites until you reach the back area. The back has a few small hilltops that have about 4 sites per hill. Each hill is about 50 yards from each other, again, providing needed space between you and other campers. All of the sites have fire pits with fold down cast iron grills. The ground was level enough for tents, and there's a good amount of trees for hammock camping.

The RV spots are located near the lake(pond), and have picnic tables and the fire pit. Some of the RV sites are more open air and without much privacy, yet some are nestled amongst the trees on the outer perimeter.

Adjacent to the RV sites are the restrooms, equipped with showers. On a very cold and frozen winter morning, I had decided to visit the facilities. To my great surprise, when I opened the door, I was hit with blast of warm air! So you can rest easy knowing that the restrooms are heated. There is a large pavilion that is open to air on three sides. the open sides have a railing with bench seats. There are also picnic tables located within. Most interesting was the oversized stone fireplace. It looks most welcoming, although I had no chance to use it.next to the pavilion is an open picnic area with charcoal grills and more tables. All of these picnic areas overlook the pond.

I understand that there is 17 miles of hiking trails surrounding the area. It looks like a large circuit with shorter trails interconnecting by the map.

I haven't experienced this campground outside of dead winter. I enjoyed the subfreezing temps next to a hot fire. I have been four times in the last couple of years, twice solo and twice with guests. I very much love this campground.

    Percy Quin State Park Campground

Would be great if not for the rain

Unfortunately our trip was clouded by the rain...pun intended.  As is typical for the Gulf Coast South... it rained and rained and rained.  There were breaks that allowed for us to get out and do a few things.  We went to the "beach" and the kids enjoyed it.  Dont think of the beach as the typical sandy beaches on coasts, instead this is a lake beach with grass.  Under water though was fine.  Quite clean and no debris.

There is a pool also, but it was closed at the time because of coronavirus.  Hopefully if we go back, it will be open then.

This particular site was very close to the water, which is why we chose it, however immediately next to our camper was a very steep drop off which made it impossible to set up our camper mat and outdoor cooking supplies next to our outdoor kitchen.  We wouldn't choose that site again.

    Clear Springs Recreation Area

    Great camping location

Spent the weekend camping at one of the improved sites with water on site. Site had picnic table, fire pit, and plenty of room for tents and your camp set-up. Our site had a great view of the creek and was a little more tucked away but right by the bathrooms. Trails are throughout the area, couple of fishing spots, lots of picnic areas with grills and a playground. The place was not very crowded and the US Forest Service ranger (Virginia) was very kind and helpful. We hiked some of Richardson Creek Trail, but decided to turn around because it was overgrown at points and we found ticks on our dog. Otherwise, it was a beautiful walk through the woods. Several large banana spiders set up along the way so keep an eye out! Also, the county is supposed to be under a fire burn until the end of October.

    Land-O-Pines Family Campground

    Pleasant campground

Land-O-Pines is a nice private RV park near Folsom and Covington. We stayed two nights because my daughter was in a horse competition at a nearby horse farm. The sites are mostly shady. The streets and sites are gravel and can get a little muddy in spots after a rain. The park was clean and quiet, and the staff was friendly. About half the sites are for permanent users.

Stayed in pull-through campsite C69 which was shady and level. It was a gravel site. There was enough parking for my 34 ft TT and truck. Neighbors are nearby by not on top of you. The site included: picnic table on gravel, no fire ring. Utilities: 20/50A electric near the middle. The 20A receptacle looked like it had some minor burn marks. Water next to power pole, good pressure. Sewer near power pole with 4 non screw-on fitting.

AT&T had 2 bars of LTE and Verizon full bars of LTE service. AT&T Speedtest: 30.8 Mbps down, 3.6 Mbps up. Verizon Speedtest: 4.5 Mbps down, 11.8 Mbps up. WiFi available, but did not use. Required a login.

Would stay here again. We camped at Land-O-Pines Family Campground in a Travel Trailer.

    Hidden Oaks Family Campground

    Looks like a blast!

Traveling through for the night. Just a few minutes from the interstate. Spacious sites. Friendly staff. They are upgrading many things in the park like electric, location of setups, etc. Has fishing and more. This park looks like a blast to come to on holidays for the family. They already have Christmas decorations up, a train ride ready and more! No doubt a great place to bring the family. Will stop by next time through. Hope it's when festivities are going.

    Tickfaw State Park Campground

Highly recommended, but busy on weekends.

Went for a few nights solo camping (with my dog) in late January, so we had the tent area to ourselves until Friday afternoon. Really impressed with the cleanliness of the grounds, but some of the fire pits and grills could use some work. Great variety of campsite layouts, as well as a couple of wheelchair friendly ones. Facilities were clean and plentiful. Several miles of trails showcasing the beauty of southern Louisiana. Will definitely be going back.

Guide to Kentwood

Percy Quin State Park is located near the Mississippi-Louisiana border at approximately 400 feet above sea level, with Kentwood situated in a transition zone between pine forests and bayou lowlands. The park and surrounding camping areas feature a mix of hilly terrain and flat wetland areas with numerous waterways including Lake Tangipahoa. Winter temperatures typically range from low 40s to mid-60s while summer months can reach 90°F with high humidity.

What to do

Kayaking at Percy Quin State Park: The lake provides excellent paddling opportunities with rental equipment available on-site during summer months. Campers can launch directly from waterfront sites. "We brought our kayaks and were able to dock at our campsite. We had a lot of fun playing in the lake. The kids also did some fishing," shares a visitor at Percy Quin State Park.

Hiking through swampland: Tickfaw State Park offers unique boardwalk trails through cypress-tupelo swamp environments with opportunities for wildlife viewing. "There are wonderful hiking, biking, and horse trails. Canoeing and kayaking was a short drive away. Did I mention that there are free mini libraries?" notes a camper at Bogue Chitto State Park.

Fishing for restocked species: Following a lake drainage and restoration project, fishing opportunities have improved at several area lakes. "This park is always clean and relaxing. Bring your boat for fishing or skiing. The lake was drained a couple years ago and has been restocked and ready for good times," mentions a visitor about Percy Quin.

Wildlife observation: The area's diverse ecosystems support abundant wildlife viewing opportunities. "We saw plenty of wildlife such as turkey, deer, rabbits, turtles, alligators and birds. Plenty of trails for hiking and biking," reports a camper at Bogue Chitto State Park.

What campers like

Secluded primitive camping options: For those seeking glamping close to Kentwood, Louisiana but preferring more rustic experiences, Indian Creek provides waterfront primitive sites. "Primative sites are all by the water!! Awesome place," states a camper at Indian Creek Campground.

Clean facilities: Many reviewers highlight the well-maintained nature of regional campgrounds. "Bathrooms were clean reasonably clean. There was some damage in the one I used. Amenities include a fishing pier and boat launch near the campground," notes a visitor to Percy Quin State Park.

Variety of camping accommodation types: Beyond traditional camping, luxury glamping experiences near Kentwood offer diverse options. "Land-O-Pines is a nice private RV park near Folsom and Covington. The sites are mostly shady. The streets and sites are gravel and can get a little muddy in spots after a rain," mentions a camper at Land-O-Pines Family Campground.

Seasonal water activities: The area's water features provide recreation beyond just fishing. "The river offers a nice swimming hole during the summer. WiFi worked good enough. Verizon cell service worked well in most areas of the park," reports a visitor to Bogue Chitto State Park.

What you should know

Wildlife cautions: Alligators are common in many waterways around camping areas near Kentwood. "Literally, don't feed the gators. There were signs everywhere. Apparently many people don't heed the signs. When my hubby rustled a bag, several alligators swam right up to our site!" warns a camper at Bogue Chitto State Park.

Flooding potential: Low-lying areas can experience periodic flooding affecting availability of some campsites. "I have had a few of my reservations cancelled by the park when the river is high because the camping areas will flood," notes a visitor to Tickfaw State Park.

Seasonal considerations: Weather affects campsite conditions significantly throughout the year. "Unfortunately our trip was clouded by the rain...pun intended. As is typical for the Gulf Coast South... it rained and rained and rained," shares a camper at Percy Quin State Park.

Cell service variability: Mobile coverage differs between carriers across camping areas. "Cell service: Verizon had no service and AT&T 2 bars," reports a Percy Quin camper.

Tips for camping with families

Holiday-themed events: Several campgrounds offer seasonal programming. "We go every year for Halloween, run down but still fun for kids to trick or treat. Campground holds water with bad rain," mentions a visitor to Adventures RV Resort.

Kid-friendly water features: Many campgrounds offer amenities specifically designed for children. "Full RV hookups. Large shower stalls with locking door. Great walking trails. The grandkids loved the splash pad/water slide and easy access to the river," shares a visitor to Bogue Chitto State Park.

Playgrounds and recreation areas: Families appreciate dedicated activity spaces. "There is mini golf(18 holes), canoeing, kayaking, petal boat rental, 'mining for gemstones', fishing, a giant slide, 3 pools and a hot tub," notes an Adventures RV Resort camper.

Site selection for family gatherings: Some locations offer neighboring sites ideal for multi-family camping trips. "Because of our last minute decision to go camping, we had limited sites to choose from (especially neighboring sites). We ended up at sites 63 and 64 which were pretty close together, but we were happy with that since we knew our neighbors," advises a Percy Quin State Park visitor.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling requirements: Many campgrounds require equipment for proper leveling. "Stayed in campsite#6 which is on the lake. Back-in site with asphalt parking. The site was level side to side and had a slight slope front to back," advises a Percy Quin camper.

Campground navigation challenges: Narrow roads can present difficulties for larger RVs. "Campground roads were narrow and there were no signs at intersections in the campground indicting which loop to take for which campsite numbers," notes an RV camper at Percy Quin State Park.

Hookup availability: For luxury glamping options near Kentwood, Louisiana, utility access varies between campgrounds. "15A/30A/50A, water, and sewer hookups. Site was level side to side and had a slight slope front to back," details an RV camper at Percy Quin.
