Best Tent Camping near Abita Springs, LA

Tent camping options near Abita Springs, Louisiana include several established campgrounds within driving distance. New Orleans RV Resort & Marina offers tent sites approximately 30 miles south of Abita Springs, while All You Need Institute provides primitive tent camping about 40 miles northeast across the Mississippi state line. Both locations accommodate tent campers with varying amenities and natural settings.

Most tent sites in the area feature gravel or dirt surfaces with minimal leveling. The All You Need Institute offers both drive-in and walk-in tent camping options with basic amenities including drinking water, fire rings, and toilet facilities. Campers should note that trash service is limited at most locations, requiring pack-in, pack-out practices. The New Orleans RV Resort provides more developed facilities with showers and drinking water, though tent campers share the grounds with RV sites and cabin rentals. Seasonal considerations include high humidity and mosquito activity during summer months.

Tent camping experiences vary significantly between the available options. The All You Need Institute provides a more secluded, nature-focused experience on its 111-acre property with opportunities for exploration. Sites are set among trees offering natural shade and privacy, though one visitor noted "big spiders all over the place, and ants nests everywhere." The New Orleans RV Resort offers convenience to urban attractions with tent sites approximately 15 minutes from the French Quarter, though several reviewers mentioned concerns about the surrounding area. According to feedback on The Dyrt, "The biggest drawbacks are the drive up and the helicopter that keeps passing over. The amenities are top notch, the sites are great."

    Fairview-Riverside State Park

    Inexpensive Small Adequate

Small campground with spots right on top of each other.

Says free internet but service at site was nonexistent.

No electric or water at site.

3 men and 3 women bathroom/shower combo rooms that are clean. Only issue is when park is full the wait for the toilets can be long because of showers.

Laundry room (coin operated) available for use.

Little gated entrance with park attendants who take payments for sites. Code for gate given for after hours

RVs located mainly in center. Tent sites behind kid’s playground. Pretty long walk.

Lots of trees gone from last hurricane. Still repairing things.

Our tent site was located on the outer side right next to swamp. It included a picnic table, fire ring, a post with site number where you place your card and you can park on the grass next to your site.

Free to cross causeway into Madisonville but $5 to return to NOLA

Must stop in Cafe Du Monde for beignets!

    Very friendly people ❤️⛺️

    Fairview-Riverside State Park

    One of the better ones

It’s got everything you need in a beautiful setting.

Tent camped. Some of the tents back up to the woods for privacy and others are more in the middle and closer to the bathroom.

    Central Bathhouse:

3 bathrooms each side (males/females) each with a shower

Laundry room with 2 washers & dryers.

    Pop machine

Tent Site: Picnic table, fire ring, charcoal grill

Water spigot for all to share

Went to another park close by and only stayed a night before coming back here ⛺️❤️

    Fontainebleau State Park Campground

Great Campground With Many Activities On Site and Surrounding Areas

My understanding is that this campground is currently closed due to the impacts of Hurricane Ida and efforts are being made to get it opened back up soon.

We tent camped on an rv site (May 2020) and set up our tent on natural ground beyond the asphalt pad.  The other campers in our area were quiet and kept to their campsites.  We enjoyed a bike ride on the Saint Tammany Trace and then made a short drive to Abita Springs for lunch.  There was high water at the time we went, so the beach area was shut down for recreation.  We did manage to get out to the pier on Sunday for a scenic view of the lake.

We plan to return to the park soon and bring our kayaks.  There seems to be lots of good paddling opportunities around the park.

    Tickfaw State Park Campground

True Louisiana atmosphere, fun for every age!

Every time we visit this park (which is a lot) we are able to have a new and fun adventure!

When my children were very young. This was one of the first places in the area to have a splash park for my children to run and play while staying cool in the south Louisiana heat.

Move up a few years, Tickfaw has provided myself and children with hours of fun, safe and informative hikes along the well maintained boardwalks through South Louisiana swamps.

As my children have grown we have still been able to explore the park further by utilizing the campgrounds! The tent camping section has defined/ private tent sites with picnic tables, and parking next to each site. The Rv park also boost a fun and family atmosphere, with fishing ponds, bike riding, canoeing, and primitive hiking. All with clean and air conditioned restroom facilities easily accessible to all sites.

    Bogue Chitto State Park Campground

    Beautiful Park. Enjoyed the stay.

Bogue Chitto State Park is wonderful, well maintained, and peaceful. We had a great weekend stay, and the weather was perfect. Take the time to explore the beach on the river. We really enjoyed hiking(it has many trails) and the beach. I enjoyed sitting along the lake in the mornings. My son really enjoyed the splash pad. Bathrooms were clean. Park has a great disc golf course, mountain bike trails, and horse trails.  Campground has Trick or Treating every Saturday in October at 6pm.  Many campers decorate their sites (we did).

Stayed in Bottomlands campsite Bottomlands, site 104. No shade. Evening sun shines under awning. Site 103 has better water view and awning faces East, but no shade. Site 105 has shade in the afternoon but cant see water from awning side. Back-in site with asphalt parking, picnic table, BBQ pit, and fire ring. 15A/30A (dont remember if it had 50A) and water; no sewer hookups. Not much shade in the campsite. The site is located on the lake, but the woods block most of the view. Nearest neighbor was at least 20-30 ft. Away. Roads in the park were asphalt. AT&T had poor service, but Verizon was good. No WiFi. We camped in a Travel Trailer.

Would definitely stay here again (but not in site 104) and bring kayaks next time. The park has a put in and take out landings on the river. We camped at Bogue Chitto State park in a Travel Trailer.

    Bogue Chitto State Park Campground

One of my favorite La. State Parks

Bogue Chitto State Park is wonderful, well maintained, and peaceful. We had a great weekend stay, and the weather was perfect, except for one eventing of rain. Take the time to explore the beach on the river.

We really enjoyed hiking (it has many trails) and kayaking the lake at the Day Use Area. My son really enjoyed the splash pad. Bathrooms were clean. Park has a great disc golf course, mountain bike trails, and horse trails.

Stayed in Uplands campsite 21. Site was pretty level side-to-side and sloped to the back. Had lots of space, but is sunny during the day. Late afternoon sun shines under awning because door side faces west. Back-in site with asphalt parking, picnic table, BBQ pit, and fire ring. 15A/30A/50A, water and sewer hookups. Not much shade in the campsite. Nearest neighbor was 20 ft. Away. Roads in the park were asphalt. Campground road is in need of some repair. Recommend sites(in order): site 31, 23, 28, 24, 30. 30-31 are near extra parking. AT&T had poor service, but Verizon was good.

Would definitely stay here again. The park has put in and take out landings on the river. We camped at Bogue Chitto State park in a Travel Trailer. We camped at Bogue Chitto State park in a Travel Trailer.

    Buccaneer State Park Campground

    Nice 3 Day Stay

Enjoyed spending 3 nights in this large, family oriented state park campground. Camped in a camper van, but most sites appear to be big rig friendly. About a half-dozen freight trains pass close by the campground; noisy, especially where we camped in the Treaure Cove loop. There is also some vehicle noise on a nearby road as well. Didn't bother us, though. Stayed in site 106. Nicely wooded with some, but not much, privacy. Probably not a good spot if charging with solar panels. Restroom/shower houses appear to be we maintained. Sites have water, electric & sewer hookups. Sites are also suitable for tent camping. Can't say anything about the staff since I did not interact with them much. Long walk to the edge of the gulf; not much of a beach near the campground entrance, but nice beaches, with places to park, a short drive east & west of the park. Good AT&T & T-mobile data service. No Wifi.

    Bogue Chitto State Park Campground

    ‘Bout That Bogue Chitto

We visited Bogue Chitto after torrential rains pummeled Louisiana and Mississippi causing the park to cancel our site we had reserved with a water view in the Bottomland Loop. This really ended up being a blessing in disguise. We were forced to just pick a site when we arrived at the park (not so great for this OCD-Teacher-Planner-Mom), but after only one drive around the Upland Loop, we decided on site 2 and were not disappointed! The site backed up to a trail, and the driver side of the trailer faced a wooded area (instead of a neighboring site) which afforded us much more privacy than any of the other sites would have. Sites 9, 14, and 46 also looked nice with their awnings facing trees instead of other campsites. All sites in this loop had sewer hook ups, so that was nice. There was a concrete pad underneath the fire ring with a lifting grill, a separate grill by the wooden picnic table, and a lantern post. There was a big tent pad close to the fire ring as well.

We thoroughly enjoyed all of the hiking and biking opportunities this campground afforded us. Although the Bottomland area was closed for camping, we still checked things out for future visits. Given the choice between the two loops in the future, I think I’d choose site 2 again. Camp hosts were visible and kept the campground very clean. During our visit, there was a Dutch Oven competition, so the campground was packed.

We only were able to stay here for two nights and left wishing we could have stayed much longer! We will definitely visit Bogue Chitto State Park again.

    Land-O-Pines Family Campground

    Pleasant campground

Land-O-Pines is a nice private RV park near Folsom and Covington. We stayed two nights because my daughter was in a horse competition at a nearby horse farm. The sites are mostly shady. The streets and sites are gravel and can get a little muddy in spots after a rain. The park was clean and quiet, and the staff was friendly. About half the sites are for permanent users.

Stayed in pull-through campsite C69 which was shady and level. It was a gravel site. There was enough parking for my 34 ft TT and truck. Neighbors are nearby by not on top of you. The site included: picnic table on gravel, no fire ring. Utilities: 20/50A electric near the middle. The 20A receptacle looked like it had some minor burn marks. Water next to power pole, good pressure. Sewer near power pole with 4 non screw-on fitting.

AT&T had 2 bars of LTE and Verizon full bars of LTE service. AT&T Speedtest: 30.8 Mbps down, 3.6 Mbps up. Verizon Speedtest: 4.5 Mbps down, 11.8 Mbps up. WiFi available, but did not use. Required a login.

Would stay here again. We camped at Land-O-Pines Family Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Guide to Abita Springs

Tent campsites near Abita Springs, Louisiana can be found within a 40-mile radius of this small community known for its artesian springs and breweries. The region features humid subtropical climate with average summer temperatures reaching 90°F with high humidity levels, while winters remain mild with temperatures rarely dropping below freezing. Most camping options require advance reservations during spring festival season when visitor numbers increase significantly.

What to do

Waterfront relaxation: Campers staying at New Orleans RV Resort & Marina can enjoy sitting along the water. "It's right on the water so you can see yachts and boats come in and out," notes Alana F., while another visitor, Stuart K., appreciates the "sitting areas with rockers" available throughout the property.

Local cuisine exploration: Sample regional cooking without leaving your campsite. New Orleans RV Resort & Marina features an on-site restaurant where guests can enjoy local specialties. According to Stuart K., they serve "excellent crab cake and bisque," while Jeff M. notes the convenience of having "a restaurant on-site" after a day of exploring.

Cultural excursions: The French Quarter and other New Orleans attractions are accessible from camping locations. "It's fifteen minutes to the action," reports Alana F. about New Orleans RV Resort & Marina, while Erich H. confirms it "sits approximately 5 miles from downtown New Orleans," making it convenient for day trips to cultural sites.

What campers like

Convenient location: Many visitors appreciate the proximity to urban attractions. "This is a great RV park tucked away from everything yet only 15 minutes to bourbon street and 10 minutes to Frenchmen," writes Richard about New Orleans RV Resort & Marina.

Natural setting: The 111-acre property at All You Need Institute provides extensive space for exploration and nature observation. Ashley F. describes it as a "Nature Lovers Paradise" with "unique and comfy accommodations" and "sweet touches" throughout the property.

On-site amenities: Facilities at some locations enhance the camping experience. Steve J. found the New Orleans RV Resort to be "head and shoulders cleaner, nicer, tidier" than other parks visited, with "lovely pool and restaurant with great prices" and "immaculate" shower rooms.

What you should know

Access considerations: The approach to some campgrounds can be challenging. Jeff M. warns about New Orleans RV Resort: "Don't let the road in past some industrial and manufacturing warehouses fool you." Alana F. agrees, noting "the road to get here is rough though, it's through an industrial park and looks very concerning."

Environmental conditions: Be prepared for insects at certain locations. At All You Need Institute, one camper reported encountering "big spiders all over the place, and ants nests everywhere" noting that "as soon as I got my food out they were all over."

Price variations: Costs can fluctuate significantly, especially during peak seasons. Katherine D. found New Orleans RV Resort to be "expensive" at "$69 per night," while David B. considered his waterfront site "a little overpriced" at "$89/night" noting he was "not impressed for the price."

Tips for camping with families

Recreational options: New Orleans RV Resort provides swimming facilities for children. Jeff M. notes the "great RV resort and Marina" has "clean spacious spots," while Stuart K. mentions the "pool, hot tub" available for family enjoyment.

Security features: Some campgrounds offer enhanced security measures. Alana F. notes that New Orleans RV Resort is "secured for those that are worried" and Stuart K. points out multiple "roadways to enter/exit resort" providing flexibility for families concerned about access.

Noise considerations: Be aware of potential noise disruptions when selecting a site. Alex N. mentions "the helicopter that keeps passing over" as one of the "biggest drawbacks" at New Orleans RV Resort, while David B. notes "occasional noise from airplanes taking off from nearby Lakefront Airport was a small detraction."

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Choose waterfront sites strategically based on specific views. David B. stayed in "waterfront campsite #21, but view was partially blocked by houseboats" at New Orleans RV Resort, while Steve J. selected "a deluxe waterside plot which was opposite one of the spare moored up river steam boats."

Parking surfaces: Most sites feature improved parking pads. David B. describes the New Orleans RV Resort as having "back-in site with gravel parking and a picnic table" that "was pretty level" with good spacing as "neighbor was at least 20 ft away."

Connectivity options: Internet access varies by location. For those needing to stay connected, David B. reports "Both AT&T and Verizon had good signal (3 bars each)" at New Orleans RV Resort with "AT&T Speedtest= 26.8 Mbps down, x 6.5 Mbps up" and notes "Free Wi-Fi is available at the office/restaurant and paid available at the sites."
