    Greenbo Lake State Resort Park

    It’s pretty nice

A lot of their sites have full hook up but not all of them. Read the details of the sites when booking. Some of the sites have really steep grades and aren’t big rig friendly.

Check in was a breeze had out car tags on our post.

They do have a full-time camp host on site.

I didn’t use the shower 🚿 house but they do have a couple on the grounds.

They have a putt putt course but bring your own putter and ball.

There is Verizon service but it’s spotty.

They do have WiFi but it’s very slow and not secure.

Place is very pet friendly. The people we have met here are great.

Sites are wide but really close together.

    Paintsville Lake State Park Campground

Nice lake, rec area and campground all nestled together

Spent the night here passing through. I did make a reservation just in case but there were a couple sites open. Nice, small campground, most sites are back in but there are a few pull through sites. The staff were friendly and the campground seems maintained fairly well. No wifi and Verizon is touchy. Out in the recreation area I had one bar and LTE though the data seemed pretty good. My site was right at the beginning of the campground. Inside my camper I could only get a signal if I put my phone in the window. The signal was good enough to stream and FaceTime but if I took it out of the window I’d lose signal.

The sites are nice and not on top of each other. They are a nice finer type gravel and mostly level. Big patio area with a picnic table and fire pit. Some of the sites at the front will give you a decent view of the lake, site 18 being the best I believe, I was in site 20.

It’s open year round according to the website. Not sure how big rig friendly it is and I couldn’t find any information on the website, I’d call first. I don’t recall seeing any 5th wheel or motor homes back there.

Overall, very nice campground and I would visit again. There is an 1850’s mountain house in the park just prior to the entrance to the campground/recreation area. There is a fee and you’ll have to check the hours. I forgot to take a picture but the song on the gift shop door said certain days by appointment only and I think Friday thru Sunday they were open for a period of time.

    Wildcat Camping and Fishing

    Very Nice Place

We have been here for a little over a month now. Nice level gravel sites with grass around them. Full hookups 30/50A at each site. Wifi. Could accommodate at least 40+ foot 5th wheels. There is a paylake with small shelter areas, playground, horseshoe pit, game room, community gathering area, store with snacks, drinks, tackle and other items. There are restrooms, but no showers or laundry. Beautiful area. About 11 miles to Paintsville, which has all the stores you'd need. Some closer convenience stores. Johnny and Regina, the owners, couldn't be any nicer. Very good monthly rates. Can receive mail and packages.

Middle Fork Campground — Natural Bridge State Resort Park

Middle Fork - Natural Bridge SP

Just got back from a quick spring break trip to the Red River Gorge. We booked our site in Middle Fork back in January. We had site B024, pull through. Clean campground, nice staff. It is narrow getting down to the site and you can easily miss it as you take the curves of Rt11/Natural Bridge Rd. We have a 37' trailer that took the entire length of the pad. If you pull through with nose facing the river, ALL utilities are on the driver's side/left. 20-30-50 amp plus water hookup. Bring your H20 filter as the 💧 is slightly brown. Pad is asphalt, table and fire ring on small gravel. Bath house has 2 shower stalls, 3 commode, 2 sinks (guys side). There is NO internet/wifi as the the supply line to the campground was cut/damaged 2+ yrs ago. Also, you are in a valley. If wx is clear you might get 2 bars/4G service. My teenagers survived. All the amenities for the park are a short drive or an easy walk. Had a great experience all around. Check out the Gorge Underground and take the SkyLift for an easy climb to Natural Bridge.

    The Ole Cornfield

Great place to unwind and enjoy the river.

The campground is brand new and it has new bath/shower houses.  It has 10 RV sites and riverside tent sites.  The sites are level and pull through with 50 amp service.  There is city water available and a dump station.  Very clean place and the staff are great to work with.  They have kayaking at the campground or shuttle service if you bring your own kayak.  The ride from the dam down to the campground is beautiful and serene.  It is great for beginning kayakers.  The tent sites along the river are so peaceful with the river running below you.  There is a lot to do in the area with Cave Run Lake for water adventures and Lockegee Rock and the Sheltowee Trail for hiking.  The Licking River has several fish species from the fun to catch bluegill to the Muskellunge.  This is a must see place that I will definitely return to.

    Buckhorn Dam Campground

Great Family Camground in the Mountains of E. KY

This has ranked #1 for campgrounds for our family this season.

Nestled in the mountains of eastern Kentucky, this campground has all the things your family could want to do in nature.

Check in was super easy and the staff was great.

The site was very easy to get to.

We were on site 13 and it was nearly perfectly level from left to right. It had both 30 and 50 amp hookups and water (about 35psi on pressure). Each site has a charcoal grill, a fire pit with a grate for cooking and a large picnic table.

Our site backed up to the creek and a nice little levee for fishing. You could also go up back the park and fish right at the spillway from Buckhorn Lake Dam. Really fun experience.

Hands down the best playground for kids we have seen in a campground.

They had a large bathhouse with super clean bathrooms. Unsure about showers as I use the one in my TT.

There were horseshoe pits in two locations in the campsite. Several locations to dispose of trash. They also provided trash bags upon arrival.

Laundry facilities onsite and firewood you could purchase.

The dump station was clean and easily accessible with a hose for flushing.

Erica and her husband are the hosts and were so friendly and helpful. We were there over Mother’s Day weekend and they provided coffee juice and doughnuts for Mother’s Day.

A ton of kiddos for kids to play with and a great area for their bikes, etc.

We 100% will be back to this campground this season.

Lake View Campground — Beech Fork State Park

    Beautiful and secluded

We visited in the end of October 2021. The colors and the views were spectacular. The drive into the park was very curvy mountain back roads. The site included a fire pit with grill and a picnic table. There was a fair amount of space between sites. Approximately 50-75 feet apart. The bath house was nice but could use a little refreshening. There are many activities including a shooting range, frisbee golf course, swimming pool, playground just to name a few. With Verizon as our service provider no cell signal was available at the park. Overall, we give 3 stars. Minus one star for no cell service and minus another star due to maintenance. Overall, very nice park.

    Jenny Wiley State Park Campground

Needs to be updated and repaired

Roads in campground are rough in places. Electrical boxes are in rough shape at some sites. 30 amp kept tripping the breaker. WiFi does not work. Several sites have full hookup but sewer hookups need to be repaired and water hookups are far away.

Winter temperatures typically drop to the 30s while summer months average in the mid-80s with moderate humidity that affects camping comfort.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Paintsville Lake State Park Campground offers bank fishing access directly from the campground. "The lake was clean but small. We had a great time and would go again," notes one visitor who stayed during Memorial Day weekend. Another camper mentions, "Fishing was good with rooster tails and panther martin spinners (silver), 1/8 and 1/16 oz."

Water activities: Oasis Point RV Resort & Adventure Lake features a man-made lake with recreational equipment. "They have stand up paddle boards and kayaks. On the other side of the lake there is a large water slide and a zip line that both end in the water," shares one camper. Summer visitors note that equipment is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Kid-friendly amenities: 4 Guys RV Park at Red River Gorge provides multiple recreational facilities on-site. A visitor notes, "They have a small fishing pond, swimming pool, basketball court, and a playground." The campground's location provides access to trails and natural attractions in the Red River Gorge area.

What campers like

Peaceful surroundings: Tent campers at Paintsville Lake appreciate the quiet setting. One camper reports, "We tent camped at one of the hike-in sites at PLSP, #33. This is the first site on your way in... The lake is really calm." The walk-in tent sites offer a buffer from RV areas.

Spacious sites: Many rv camping areas near Oil Springs, Kentucky feature well-designed layouts. A visitor to Sheltowee RV Park & Cabins shared, "The campground is very well maintained. It's quite and tucked away. Nature trails, ponds for relaxing and watching the wildlife or fishing." Sites typically include gravel pads and full hookup options.

Clean facilities: Bathhouses receive consistent positive feedback at several campgrounds. One camper at Paintsville Lake noted, "The restrooms are clean. Three showers. NO ONE other than the tent campers seemed to use the bath house so I never waited for a shower." Another visitor described them as "the cleanest I've ever seen!"

What you should know

Cell service challenges: Mobile reception varies significantly by carrier. Sprint users report particularly poor service at Paintsville Lake. A camper noted, "I had terrible phone service with Sprint here." Some campgrounds offer WiFi to compensate for limited cellular reception.

Reservation difficulties: Securing spots at popular campgrounds requires advance planning. One visitor to Paintsville Lake reported, "I tried for two years before I finally got a reservation. While we were camping, I checked again and it was all booked up all summer, crazy."

Wildlife encounters: Backwoods Camping & RV Park and similar campgrounds in the area have active wildlife. A camper mentioned enjoying "quiet nights (other than woodland animals)." At Paintsville Lake, visitors warn, "There are raccoons who like to eat so be sure to put your food up at night."

Tips for camping with families

Swimming options: Several campgrounds offer water access specifically designed for children. At Paintsville Lake, "There is some access right at the campground for littles to get in the water. I really recommend water shoes as there are some hooks/lures in the water."

Playground access: Outpost Campground & RV Park maintains central recreational areas for children. A visitor notes, "There is a great, centrally located playground where the kids were able to run around after being in the truck for eight hours." Playground equipment is typically standard with swings and climbing structures.

Kid-friendly staff: Campground operators often provide special attention to families. A camper at Outpost shared, "We stayed 5 nights at the Outpost and the owner was extremely nice! Brought me some fresh tomatoes and watermelon for my birthday!" Many campgrounds maintain small stores with essential supplies for family needs.

Tips from RVers

Site levelness: RV campers report varying experiences with site grading. At Valley Breeze RV Campground, visitors appreciate that the grounds are "very well kept and clean" with good amenities including full hookups. Site preparation typically involves minimal leveling on maintained gravel pads.

Overnight restrictions: Some RV parks limit stay durations. One visitor to Valley Breeze reported asking for a 4-night stay but was told "overnight only." Travelers planning extended stays should call ahead to confirm multi-night availability rather than relying solely on online information.

Summer shade considerations: Several newer RV parks near Oil Springs lack mature trees. A visitor to 4 Guys RV Park noted, "My only complaint, and I will say it is a very small complaint — it must be a relatively new park because there are no shade trees." During summer months, temperatures in the high 80s make shade a premium feature for rv camping in eastern Kentucky.
