Glamping options near Mount Vernon, Kentucky provide modern amenities while maintaining connection to the natural environment. The region sits in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains with elevations ranging from 900-1,500 feet above sea level. Weather conditions vary seasonally with humid summers averaging 85°F and cooler fall nights dropping to the 40s, making spring and fall the most comfortable camping seasons.
What to do
Fishing access points: At Scales Lake Park, the lake is stocked for casual anglers with no motorized boats allowed. "Peaceful and quiet with a small trolling only lake and swimming area," notes camper Andi W., highlighting the tranquil fishing experience available.
Hiking trail networks: The region offers trails ranging from beginner to moderate difficulty. Harmonie State Park Campground features several well-maintained paths through wooded areas. A camper mentioned, "They have a nature center in the middle of the campground that is open Thursday-Sunday in the summer. There are 3 playgrounds throughout the campground."
Disc golf courses: Vastwood County Park offers an 18-hole disc golf course that winds through the park grounds. "Park features playground, paved biking and walking trails, disc golf, plenty of shade, lake with boat dock (non-motorized boats only)," shares Chelsea B., detailing the recreational opportunities available.
What campers like
Full hookup availability: Many sites at Miles Landing Campground provide comprehensive utilities. "Fairly new with great access to fishing. Bike riding enjoying nature. Several pull through sites and all are full hook up," explains Wendy T., highlighting the modern conveniences available.
Swimming facilities: Public swimming areas with designated beach zones provide relief during warmer months. "Scales Lake is beautiful, my daughter enjoyed the playground and the petting zoo, and we'd probably like to come back, just maybe not on such a busy weekend," notes Stefanie W., suggesting weekday visits for a less crowded experience.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: The reclaimed land around some campsites creates ideal habitat for local species. "I used to live near here before the strip mine went through. The camp is in the middle of a large reclamation. Lots of ponds and young trees," says Doug from Miles Landing Campground, describing the regenerating ecosystem.
What you should know
Site leveling challenges: Some parks require additional equipment for comfortable setup. At Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park, John R. notes, "Only reason I don't give campground a 5 is due to the very sloped sites. Most are very difficult to level up."
Reservation timing: Popular sites book quickly during peak seasons. "We recently stayed here for the Labor Day weekend. It was a smaller camp ground but that made it very quiet. The sites were very spacious and far enough apart that you had room to spread out," reports Jacinda L. about Miles Landing.
Ferry transportation: Some locations require ferry crossings which may impact travel plans. "If you are coming from the south you will have to take the ferry across the river. Sometimes there is a pretty good wait," explains Chris Y. about accessing Cave-in-Rock State Park.
Tips for camping with families
Animal encounters: Warrick County Park Scales Lake Park offers unique wildlife experiences. "There is a small petting zoo at the park and in the morning they let the animals out to feed on the grass. So expect to see them in the campground. Harmless and unique," explains Keith P.
Water activities: Look for campgrounds with swimming areas designed for children. "Beautiful lake front for swimming with water slide and diving boards. There is a boat ramp for fishing boats and kayaks," mentions Jennifer T. about Scales Lake Park's family-friendly water features.
Seasonal events: Holiday-themed weekends provide additional entertainment for children. "We went to Lake Rudolph for their Halloweekends and it is a one of a kind experience. They have so many activities for the kids such as hayrides, a DJ, pumpkin carving," shares Ashley D.
Tips from RVers
Site spacing considerations: Sun Outdoors Lake Rudolph offers varying site configurations. "Our spot was great and didn't require much leveling. We did get a deluxe spot. However we only got the spot because at the others were sold out. Many of the other Spots were on hills and right on top of each other," advises megan.
Electrical connections: Pay attention to amperage options when booking. "The only thing I wish that would have been better, is the electrical hookups could probably be updated," notes Keith P. about Warrick County Park facilities.
Turning radius requirements: Some parks have tight access roads. "We had 3 RVs in our group and we camped in one of the 'wagon wheels'. It was a very cool experience. I'm not sure how you could get in or out if all the spots were reserved. It took a collaborative effort when it was time to pull out," reports Dan H. about the site layout at Scales Lake Park.
