Of the 5,124 acres of public hunting now available on the area, over 1,900 acres are wetlands. The marshes are very shallow and have accumulated silt from the Marsh Creek watershed. As a result, the Department is embarking on a multiple year renovation for the areas wetlands beginning with Gun Club. Plans include new wetlands, new water control structures and renovation of existing wetlands by subdividing into units so water and vegetation can be managed more effectively. During renovation construction activities will impact and change uses of the area in the process of reaching the renovation goals. The goal of the renovation is to provide optimum wildlife habitat, improved user opportunities and play an important role in the overall Lower Republican River watershed management and life span of the marshes.
This area is located along a major migration route for the Central Flyway. The first waterfowl and shorebirds migrate through the area in late August. An 800-acre refuge is located at the north end of Gamekeeper Marsh. The refuge is closed to all activity from Oct. 1 through Mar. 1 except for the SPECIAL HUNTS conducted during hunting seasons. The refuge gives migratory birds a resting place and increases hunting and wildlife viewing opportunities on the area.
There are varieties of other wildlife habitats on the area. Upland birds and small game species use weeds, crop fields, grasses and shrubs, while big game prefers the timbered areas. The area offers excellent opportunities to view and photograph wildlife. Marsh Creek, Gamekeeper Dam, and Muskrat Landing are shallow boat landings for hunter access to waterfowl areas.
The limited public lands in Kansas require intensive wildlife management and some special restrictions. This area receives heavy hunting pressure. Wildlife population and hunter use surveys are conducted to evaluate management and the effects of heavy pressure on the area.

$150 - $250 / night

This is a self service park and it’s $20 for full hook ups although some of the spaces only had 50 amp service instead of 50 and 30. If you stay in the upper level, you might want to make sure you have a long sewer hose as it is quite a ways behind the trailer. Park does have bathrooms and a shower that were so so. There also is a disc golf available at the back of the lake. Nice walk around the lake. Sidenote there’s a nice nine hole golf course here that was fairly inexpensive and highly recommend los Primos Mexican restaurant for dinner.
Easy access from highway. Most sites are 30 amp back in with 4 30/50 posts marked with pull thru. Showers and restrooms at swimming pool a block north. Dump at entrance of campsite. Water hydrants but not at all sites. Would stay again for quite overnight stay. August 10, 2024 $15 night Dropbox
This is a nice spot for a quick visit. Free hookups but only 50 amp
Quite park with lots of space. There are about 20 free Rv spots with electric and water hookups and several site with electricity for tents. They have nice clean bathrooms, a large playground in the shade, and a fishing pond
I'm not a glamper, thus I don't expect much, but Lone Star is a really nice place to take a family. A cowboy would like it too. Good facilities, swimming, and a nice lake to fish.
Only two small sites and one appears to hamve sewage. There's a bathroom available. Best suited for an outdoorsman that's hunting or fishing.
This site is for the true outdoorsman or cowboy, not for the glamping crowd.
14 spots for RV's with electrical hiokups, bathrooms available, with a shower.
Camped here over the Fourth of July weekend and was surprised that it was only about 3/4 of the way full. Quite a bit of day use Traffic with people kayaking and fishing, but remained peaceful and relaxing place.
Small but not much use FREE. Stopped here on Dyrt review recommendation and was not disappointed. Labor Day weekend an we were the only one here. Only 2, 30 foot sites and 30 amp electric plus water. Did I mention Free? Pavilion with picknic tables. We would stay here again. A couple of large cottonwood trees shade the site. We didn’t unhook and the site was level.
This is our new go-to place. The spots are spacious and the view is beautiful. It’s also a bonus it offers WiFi.
We stayed 3 nights, it was a very nice place, they have water and electric at the site, water was not on as we camped in March. There is a sump station behind the High School. Pads are Concrete, I believe they have 20 pads, and an area for tent campers with electricity as well, small play ground too.
Broadcasting this now because I was not aware when I showed up: there are only two designated tent sites in this entire campground. However, both these sites are clean, beautiful, and located near the trail that takes you to the (honestly very well-presented) adjacent historical park. Out of the two Nebraska state recreation areas I stayed at on my trip through the state, this one is definitely my favorite. I would give it 3.5 stars, but the coin-operated showers knock it down to a 3.
Warn showers, wonderful wildlife viewing, and full hookups. Quiet campground. Near the world's largest ball of twine! 😁
Nice spot to camp without spending a fortune. Their 50 amp plug ins were by the road but we didn’t get much if any traffic noise. We got to watch the parade from where we were parked. Will definitely be back!
The scenery was beautiful. They also had a nice playground, plenty areas to fish and explore. Only complaint was the spacing of the water spigot and absolutely no cell service for the area. Not that you need it but in case of an emergency or even to check the weather you won’t be able to if you have Verizon.
Fairly quiet park off the highway. Not much to do around here but that's OK with us. Very small Midwest town. Two gas stations no grocery stores. 4 sites with 50 amp electric, water and sewer. $15 per day
I grew up here, stopped going when it became a party haven filled with drama, recently gave it a second chance and could not be happier I did so. It has really been cleaned up in all aspects. I WILL RETURN 🙂
This is more of a city park vibe rather than a camping spot but it's well maintained with plenty of amenities for staying the night on our way through
If you’re ever near Stromsberg NE, this is THE town to stop in. Campground is in and near Buckley park. We stayed in the older campground, which had electric, shade trees, a bathroom ( not a pit toilet) with a sink and soap. But upon walking the area we found the newer, As of late last year, campground. That one even has a water hook up for every site. Both grounds have a host and are lit at night for security, but look up the town, rated A + in the US for crime rate. Walking the town it feels as if I walked back in time. Pay phones, bikes in their stands left unlocked, everyone says hi. I can’t say enough about this town. But bring cash if you want to purchase almost anything, as many of businesses do not accept CC or debit cards. It all works on the donation system, so give what you can.
My husband and I just needed somewhere to stay overnight while driving through Kansas. This fit the bill because it was along our route. It is VERY primitive and used for hunting according to the website. Our issue was that there were a million mosquitos because the water flowing right beside it. We couldn't even walk from the car to our teardrop camper without getting swarmed. Otherwise the area would not have been horrible just to stay overnight. We did not make it to the bathroom across the road, but it looked like a normal vault toilet.
lots of hookups and places to rent camp. pretty bodies of water. not a bad spot
Excellent lake and open country! Big hunting fields to run dogs in. Good WiFi, cell service and water hooks ups in March! Looks like there is year around camping. They have prime site with fire pits, grills, concrete pad, tie down chains for wind. Bath house was being updated so no idea the condition. Pheasant can be heard in morning and evening. Lake is huge! Lots of different camping options around. Playground for kids at Kanza campground
This roadside veteran style park is perfect for setting up camp and resting your eyes. We only stayed here for about 8 total hours but it was worth every penny. This campground is FREE and offers electricity and water hook-ups. If you have kids there is a playground and ample room for your human or fir babies to run free and burn energy. If you pass through this is a must go to stop(even just to stretch the legs! We would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a safe and free campground!

Rating a three for two reasons: 1) the potable water is shut off (dump station open), and 2) the RV camp Spots are directly next to each other (No room for privacy feom the neighbors)
However, we always prefer to camp by some sort of body of water, so check that box. AND they have a great Christmas light show throughout the park around the lake/campground for the locals that my daughter enjoyed!
Favorite place to stay for early season bow hunting. Camp hosts are always kind and do a great job. Site #20 has best cell service.
No water after Nov. 1 and have to fill from well pump.
We got here yesterday. It has electric 50/30 and water, concrete pads are level. Picnic table. Lots of shade. Clean. By donation. US 81 is close and under construction so there is some highway noise but in noticable when in the trailer. 14 spots, 10 were full. Town is very historic and friendly.
