What to do
Kayaking and water activities: At Lovewell State Park, visitors can bring kayaks to explore the various coves around the lake. "We take our kayaks with us and enjoy exploring the coves around the lake," notes one Cedar Point Campground visitor.
Disc golf courses: Rocky Pond has a course available at the back of the lake. A visitor at Rocky Pond City Park Campground points out: "There also is a disc golf course available at the back of the lake. Nice walk around the lake."
Winter camping options: Lovewell State Park remains open during winter months with modified facilities. "We have visited Lovewell many times during the summer, but this was our first winter trip... The bathrooms were open, however there was no running water. Showers and the main store were both closed, not surprisingly with it being winter."
What campers like
Wildlife viewing opportunities: The region provides habitats for various bird species. "Huge wildlife area with fantastic birding. Lots of nature to explore and other facilities for games and boating," shares a visitor at Glen Elder State Park.
Fire ring features: Some cabin areas offer premium fire facilities. "The camp fire ring was THE BEST I have EVER seen! It was spacious to accommodate a substantial fire, and had an ADJUSTABLE grill grate! It was perfect for regulating temperatures from cooking to keeping warm."
Lake views: Many cabins provide scenic vantage points. "All of the primitive spots are wonderful and have a lot of space for the kids to play. There are also beautiful views of the lake at all of the primitive camping spots."
What you should know
Cell service limitations: Several areas have restricted coverage. "Absolutely no cell service for the area. Not that you need it but in case of an emergency or even to check the weather you won't be able to if you have Verizon," reports a camper at Cedar Point Lovewell State Park.
Water level fluctuations: Lovewell is a man-made reservoir primarily for irrigation. "Lovewell is a man made lake for irrigation purposes so if there is a dry year the lake will be low. That to me is its only downfall."
Payment procedures: Most cabin areas require self-service payment after hours. "We arrived after hours, so we had to pay by the envelope drop post. $10 for primitive camping and a $3 fee. If you have time, I recommend driving all over the campgrounds to pick your location prior to paying."
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Multiple parks feature play areas for children. "For the kids they have a nice park and area to play up by the Marina area. I also recommend taking a drive around the outside for docks and fishing areas away from the main camping."
Space considerations: Some cabin areas provide more room for activities. "Walleye and Willow are our favorite utility camp grounds. There seems to be more room for the kids to run around. Cottonwood is more close knit."
Swimming options: Deshler City Park Campground offers seasonal pool access with cabin rentals. "Disc golf, horseshoes, pool during season, volleyball, wonderful green space with mature trees, bushes and flowers."
Tips from RVers
Utility connections: Some cabin areas have specific hookup layouts. "If you stay in the upper level, you might want to make sure you have a long sewer hose as it is quite a ways behind the trailer," notes a visitor at Rocky Pond.
Seasonal facility changes: Winter visitors should prepare for limited services. "The potable water is shut off (dump station open), and 2) the RV camp spots are directly next to each other (No room for privacy from the neighbors)."
Budget-friendly options: Glen Elder State Park Cabins offer affordable lakefront options. "Lakefront dispersed camping $13/night" with cabin options available at various price points throughout the park system.
