Rocky Ford Campground — Tuttle Creek State Park

The best kept secret campground in Kansas!

When camping in Kansas you must try the Rocky Ford Campground in Tuttle State Park River Pond Area. This is a great shaded area with water views and full hookups. There are great secluded sites or sites you can camp next to friends or family. There are huge cottonwood trees that are wrapped with green vines during the summer months that guide you through the park. Make sure and put your food away at night or the raccoons will be dining at your table during the night. Site #44 is our favorite spot to hang the hammock and relax after biking or hiking the trails.

You can tent with or without power. Has water and electric hook ups on a couple spots. On certain spots they have one of each, or none. Has Bathrooms, no showers. It’s free to stop here!! They have donation box which I hope you donate so they can keep this place going.

      River Pond State Park Campground

      Great place to stay

Lots of sites. Lots of trees. Small dog park in one corner. Many of the sites are well spread out, but even the close ones are quiet due to the trees absorbing sound. Pull throughs are not too level and services are on the wrong side so make sure your hose and electric cable are long enough. Could never connect to the WiFi. 4g signal was pretty strong. Park does need to label the roads with site numbers. I recommend arriving in daylight to find your spot, as well as researching your location beforehand.

      River Pond State Park Campground

      Nice State Park

The is a nice clean Kansas State Park. Lots of shady spots. Easy access to walking trails and water activities. Fire pits and picnic tables at every site. Most sites are only water and electric. There are only a half dozen or so full hook up sites and they are generally always full during camping season. There are two dump stations on site. This park is close to home for us and we camp here often.

      Stockdale

      Secluded ACOE Campground

Well maintained, gravel sites with good electric and water hookups. Dump station also provided attached hose to allow black tank flush. Verizon cell service and digital TV signal were strong. Visited Manhattan, KS and Oz Museum in Wamego, KS. Plenty to do in the area and this campground provided a nice, secluded base. Boat ramps available to allow access to Kansas’ 2nd largest lake.

      Bailey’s RV Resort and Campground

      Great for an overnight stop

Well kept campground ran by a very nice husband and wife. Located on the west side of town, right off of highway 36 makes this easily accessible. Upon entrance, you are taken to your site and given the campground rules, WiFi information, and nearby restaurants. The sites are very clean with full hookups. A small man-made pond sits to the north, with part of a golf course in view. The shower house is clean and spacious. There is a laundry room as well, with a few washers, dryers, and a space to sit. As we were only there overnight during our travels, we did not utilize the group fire pit or covered shelter, but they appeared to be in great condition. Some sites have shade, some are limited. The owners live onsite, which is helpful. Rock pads with some grassy areas in between sites. The campground sits behind a hotel, which helps to minimize the highway noise. Dollar General used to be next to the campground as well, but it has moved. There were construction workers renovating that building while we were there however there were no signs noticed as to what the building will house next. Close to Casey’s for fuel and other amenities. Good overnight stop!

      Pottawatomie County State Lake #2

      Quiet place to tuck away

Driving across Kansas can be long and tedious and I'm often looking for a place to primitive-car-camp on the cheap to get some sleep while crossing the country. This little lake worked perfectly for me. Not a huge detour from I-70 (maybe 20-30 minutes total) - I found the campground completely empty on a Monday night in early September and woke up with a picnic table and a fire pit next to a calm lake with jumping fish and just a few local fisherman visible in various spots. There were no annoying gates or camp managers or $ charges, and that's perfect for my purposes.. Made a cup of coffee by the lake and got back on the road. I didn't see bathroom/shower/electrical or any other "advanced" services so this is more for those of us who just need a peaceful place to tent camp.

      Pottawatomie County State Lake #2

      Nice Free Site

I thought it was really cool that Kansas has fishing lakes with designated free campgrounds surrounding them. We were there during a very dry spell and smoke detector went off in our van because our windows were down and the dirt road leading to the lake was so dusty. We pulled in late evening and there were still places to choose from (we stayed August 6). There were clean pit toilets and the spaces were spaced out enough to feel a sense of privacy

Randolph — Tuttle Creek State Park

      Nice State Campground

Stayed here for a couple nights, its a nice campground but fairly busy with close proximity to Manhattan and Fort Riley as well as the ORV park. Predominantly RV campers and off road rigs. We were able to snag a drive up tent spot and had no neighbors which was nice and relaxing.

    Guide to Marysville

Marysville sits in northeastern Kansas near the Nebraska border at 1,150 feet elevation. The area experiences distinct seasons with hot summers and cold winters, making spring and fall ideal for camping. The region features rolling plains with small lakes and river systems that provide habitat for diverse wildlife including Marysville's notable black squirrels.

    What to do

Explore historical sites: Marysville City Park offers easy access to local history attractions. "Went to the Pony Express station & museum, & was pleasantly surprised by how interesting & informative it was," reports Lyndell A., who recommends trying the "Wagon Wheel Cafe! Excellent food."

Wildlife viewing opportunities: The region hosts unique wildlife viewing, particularly at Rock Creek Campground. One camper notes the interpretive center relates to "the Pony Express and Oregon Trail in the adjacent Historical Park," with "paved road access to the park from both the north and the south from US HWY 136 or NE HWY 8."

Water recreation: River Pond Campground provides numerous water activities. "Fishing in the lake, the spillway or the pond is always productive," writes Tommie J., while another camper adds that "The lake is amazing and it has some great trail access."

    What campers like

Donation-based camping: Campers appreciate Marysville City Park's affordable donation system. "Free, although they do take donations and I would recommend it so they can continue to provide this great service," shares one reviewer. Another notes, "It's free to stop here!! They have donation box which I hope you donate so they can keep this place going."

Quiet settings: Chautauqua Park Campground receives praise for its peaceful atmosphere. "Safe, clean, and nearly full by the time we parked early-evening on a Friday," reports Meghan B., who notes the campground appears "geared toward RVs/vans, not so much toward tenting."

Well-maintained facilities: Campers consistently mention clean, well-kept amenities. One camper at Rock Creek Station describes it as a "Clean, quiet campground," noting that "Camp hosts are always kind and do a great job."

    What you should know

Limited camping spots: At Marysville City Park, electrical hookups are scarce. "Limited spots with 30/50 amp are available, they are pull off as in drive over the curb and park. I did mention limited as in very few, I can't express this enough as I think I saw 3 maybe 4 spots with electric hookups."

Seasonal considerations: Many campgrounds have seasonal limitations. At Rockford Lake, one camper mentions "no cell phone service the whole time," while Rock Creek notes "No water after Nov. 1 and have to fill from well pump."

    Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: RVers should note which parks offer full services. At Riverside Park, a camper reports "Nice concrete pads large enough for our fifth wheel. 50amp water electric for $20."

Pull-through access: Some parks offer easier parking options. Rock Creek Campground provides "paved back in sites for RV/Campers" with "standard 30A electric hookup, with 20A duplex outlet as well."
