    Sarge Creek

    Great site. Very clean.

Clean campsite. Fire pit had recently been cleaned out. Nice little path down to the water from this spot. Water and electricity available but didn't use this trip. If you hammock camp, the poles on the canopy are perfectly spaced for a great hang. No firewood to buy on premises so pick it up in the near town of Ponca City if you want to light a fire. There is dead wood around as well if you want to source it that way.

    Beaumont Hotel & RV Park

Hotel & Campground with plenty of room to pitch a tent. Even an air strip!

Located in the Heart of the Flint Hills in Kansas. Right off highway 400 about 26 miles east of Augusta, Kansas. Fly in with your own plane, drive your car/RV  or ride your bicycle.  Beaumont with their own airport, hotel, campground, and cafe with a lot of Frisco Railroad History.

I camped in a tent in September 2020.  The cafe is open Fri 8 am-8 pm; Sat 7am-9pm; Sun 7 am-2pm (closed in winter).  One of the motel rooms behind the cafe is available for showers and restrooms for campers.  I enjoyed supper and breakfast at the cafe.--friendly people and great food.  Quiet evening and fantastic stargazing.

    Santa Fe Lake

Pretty basic but close to home

This is a nice smaller lake that is fairly close to Wichita. Great staff on board. Electric only but the office lets you fill your fresh water tank by the entrance and there is a dump station. Swim beach & great for tent camping. This was the first lake we went to as new RV owners.

    Great location....But!

This is a great location, right on the lake with lots of trees. But with our one encounter the camp host was very rude and would not let us park until they cleaned up our area. We were there at our scheduled time and they hadn’t even started. They have a brand new shower house, but it is very nasty and ill maintained. no place to put your clean clothes without getting them wet. This was approximately May 2018. It may have improved by now.

    Santa Fe Lake

    Clean, quiet, family/dog friendly, affordable

This location is well maintained with multiple tent camping spots and a few electric. The owners take great pride in keeping it this way. The mountain bike trails as well as hiking trails are perfect for beginners to experts. It is large enough for wake but we love taking our kayaks out.

    Santa Fe Lake

    Trail running and romantic sunsets

The main trail is composed of a gravel camping road that encircles the man made lake. The road is bike and vehicle friendly, though it seems only park vehicles are allowed. Several trails offshoot from this main road, each is marked for either hiking (trail running), mountain biking, or camping. Theres several large camping sites, and both the bike and hike routes seem to be loops that end back at the starting offshoot on the main road. None of the hikes are very difficult, most are easy/moderate and support running. They are very easy for hiking. Some bike routes are more difficult. Half are in woods with trees as low as 5ft over the trail, the other half go through open fields. Since there are many different routes to take, its easy to increase or decrease the distance. I had no trouble clearing four miles by running out, doing a trail (full loop) and running back. The loops aren't always possible to cut, so keep in mind that its sometimes hard to tell how far along a loop you are. Note that few of these trails have views of the lake; only the campgrounds, bench sites, and main trail/road are unobstructed to the water. There are several beautiful views of the small damn and the broken sections that create a little waterfall. The sunset in particular was really peaceful and easy to watch from the benches (perfect for a romantic picnic).

Guide to Arkansas City

Wellington KOA serves as a central hub for glamping near Arkansas City, Kansas, located approximately 13 miles south. The campground operates year-round with full hookup sites and climate-controlled cabin options. Most glamping sites in the region sit within the rolling terrain of the Flint Hills at elevations between 1,000-1,400 feet, creating distinct seasonal camping experiences.

What to do

Mountain biking trails: Santa Fe Lake offers dedicated mountain biking paths suitable for beginners through experts. "The main trail is composed of a gravel camping road that encircles the man made lake. Several trails offshoot from this main road, each is marked for either hiking (trail running), mountain biking, or camping," explains one visitor.

Fishing opportunities: Coon Creek Cove provides access to productive fishing areas on Kaw Lake. "Get up early and watch the pelicans come in to the cove. Good fishing," notes Christine N. The campground features a boat ramp but no designated swimming beach.

Historical exploration: Beaumont Hotel & RV Park combines camping with aviation history. "The history of the hotel and accompanying landing strip was fascinating, and the path to the ponds at sunset was beautiful," shares Sarah B. The property includes an airstrip where small aircraft can land directly at the campground.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Wellington KOA maintains high standards for its bathrooms and shower facilities. "Friendly staff, extremely clean bathrooms and showers! Nice grassy spot for our tent!" reports Wandering W. The campground's late check-in process receives praise for being well-organized with individual maps for each site.

Water access: Sarge Creek Campground sits directly on Kaw Lake with waterfront campsites. "Clean campsite. Fire pit had recently been cleaned out. Nice little path down to the water from this spot," notes Jim H. Sites include water and electricity, though campers should bring firewood from nearby Ponca City.

Night sky viewing: The Flint Hills region surrounding Arkansas City provides exceptional stargazing conditions. "Quiet evening and fantastic stargazing," reports Joyce R. about her September camping experience at Beaumont. The minimal light pollution makes glamping sites ideal for astronomical observation.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: During peak season (April-October), securing sites in advance is essential. "I was able to reserve the last walk in site (Saturday of 4th of July weekend) around 8pm. You can reserve online thru recreation.gov," explains Katherin at Sarge Creek Campground.

Seasonal pricing: Santa Fe Lake charges premium rates during summer months. "It was $32 to stay the night, and the showers were coin-op. The view over the lake was gorgeous when we woke up, but we were sandwiched between the lake and the main entry road," notes Shaanti O.

Alcohol policies: Many public campgrounds near Arkansas City prohibit alcohol consumption. "The only real downside is that there is no alcohol allowed, but nobody really came around checking that we noticed. We also didn't leave beer cans scattered all around so that probably helped," shares Chris L. regarding Santa Fe Lake.

Tips for camping with families

Trail difficulty levels: Family hiking options vary by campground. "None of the hikes are very difficult, most are easy/moderate and support running. They are very easy for hiking," explains Armaan M. about Santa Fe Lake's trail system, making it suitable for children of different ages.

Beach access: Coon Creek offers family-friendly shoreline areas. "Playground, boat ramp, no beach or swim area," notes Christine N. Families seeking swimming opportunities should check which campgrounds maintain designated beach areas, as not all lakeside locations permit swimming.

Campsite spacing: Wellington KOA provides adequate separation between sites for family privacy. "Nice KOA campground. Clean, friendly employees. Would stay here again," reports Jason B. The campground's layout helps reduce noise between neighboring sites.

Tips from RVers

Overnight convenience: Wellington KOA provides efficient services for one-night stays. "This is a very clean and well maintained camp ground. We just needed one night and used the coin operated laundry," shares Jack B. The campground's proximity to highways makes it popular for travelers passing through.

Hookup availability: Most glamping sites near Arkansas City offer partial hookups. "Hookups all work, no problems. Sites are gravel and maybe a little rutted, some more gravel would help level things up," notes Mark S. about Wellington KOA's utility connections.

Water tank filling: Santa Fe Lake accommodates RVers needing to refill tanks. "Electric only but the office lets you fill your fresh water tank by the entrance and there is a dump station," explains Marty D., highlighting the campground's RV-friendly amenities despite limited site hookups.
