Best Campgrounds near Creston, IA

Southwest Iowa surrounding Creston features several lake-oriented campgrounds that provide diverse camping experiences. Green Valley State Park Campground, located directly in Creston, serves as a central hub with tent sites, RV hookups, and cabin accommodations available from April through December. Within a 30-minute drive, Three Mile Lake Recreation Area offers year-round camping with both main and south campgrounds providing lake views and modern amenities. Lake Icaria County Park, approximately 25 miles west of Creston, rounds out the major water-based camping options with boat-in access and full-service sites. These established campgrounds primarily cater to recreational vehicles with electric hookups, though tent camping areas exist at most locations.

Camping availability follows seasonal patterns with most facilities operating from April through October or November. Green Valley State Park requires reservations during peak summer months when weekend occupancy reaches capacity. As one camper noted, "During the week you can almost have the place to yourself... it is a different story on the weekends." Most campgrounds in the region feature gravel pads with varying degrees of levelness. Weather considerations include hot, humid summers with occasional severe thunderstorms and potential tornado warnings. Winter camping options are limited, though Three Mile Lake Recreation Area remains open year-round. Many campgrounds lack strong cellular coverage, particularly in more remote areas away from Interstate 80.

Fishing access ranks as the primary attraction across most campgrounds near Creston. Lakes in the region support bass, bluegill, and catfish populations, with many sites offering direct shoreline access. According to visitor reviews, "The lake is great, nice beach and boating!" at Lake Icaria, while Green Valley State Park provides "fishing areas, two kid playgrounds and at around 15 minutes to any grocery stores and gas stations." Shade trees receive consistent praise at most established campgrounds, providing relief during hot summer months. Bathroom and shower facilities vary in quality and maintenance across locations, with state parks generally offering more reliable amenities than county parks. Most campgrounds provide fire rings, picnic tables, and basic utilities, though site privacy can be limited.

    Nine Eagles State Park Campground

    Big park. Lots of trails

This park is huge with a lot of trails most of which are not on a map and a map isnt provided out on them either so one just kind of has to make guesses on where to go. The electric campground is completely exposed to the sun. Nice right now but has to be brutal in the summer and the sites are right on top of one another as well. It is also a long ways from the beach as is the primitive campground. Horse campground is adorable but there are only primitive sites there which I always find so surprising. They have multiple trails leaving from there though which is cool. Firewood is sold in the small town a mile away and there is a very old cemetery right outside of the park which is cool to meander through. Bathrooms were closed but the water and electric were on and the price is very reasonable.

    Slip Bluff County Park

    Surprised but pleased

First, you have to want to get here. Pretty long drive on rougher gravel roads. Fine for a car or truck but the dashboard and dust will affect your RV. But, campground is cute, nicely laid out, work put in to make flat spots which have some privacy and all under huge and beautiful oak trees. Trails all through the property. Loads of trails around the lake. Everything one needs from water, trash, bathrooms and electricity with 5g Verizon access.

    Fifes Grove Co Park

    Nice quiet park

There's a handful of first come. First served sights with electric water is available. Trash firewood and put toilets are also available. There are several nice hikes around the park and across the street is a sizable lake, and you're only a mile or two from town.

    Poe Hollow County Park

Small modern campground near road with road noise

We stopped for a night. It's a small circular campground that provides electric water, trash recycling, wood and a pit toilet. The sights are very small, very close and very uneven. Also, there's a busy road, just feet away. That has a lot of road noise. They can even be heard through a closed up camper. There's a great trail that leads to a 2 mile paved trail. Note there are stairs if you take your bike. You will have to carry them up the stairs.

    Kokesh Co Park

Cute but no way to park flat

Very basic small county campground. Three spots with electric tiny playground area and some spots for tents. Pit toilet electric water, those are the services. Impossible to park a small camper van flat, though I completely would have stayed and done some exploring in the area, but literally impossible to get flat. Nice ring. Of trees around the outside so protected from the wind. Cute grass well maintained. I just wish they'd made the camping area for R. V's flat. This is also not for big rigs. If you're gonna come, you gotta come with something small enough to fit into the spaces.

    Marlin Fogle Rec Area

    Simple but complete services

This is a small but fairly well maintained campground. Spots don't have a view of the lake which is a little odd. And there's a town right there. Surprising number of people at the campground for this time of the year. All there is is electric and water and trash, but there must be at least eight campers here right now.

Lake of Three Fires State Park Campground

Rated so high due to the trails

Tons of miles for biking and hiking and if you fold in the trails on the public lands around, more then anyone can do in a weekend. We'll maintained. Campground, not so much. That would get a much lower score if I rated just that. Very few electric spots and they are close and in disrepair. Bathrooms are oddly placed like the group campground would need to walk all the way across the picnic area to have any access. Once they close the shower facilities, some campgrounds have no bathrooms available. Oddly, there is a LOT of vehicles driving through which for winter was surprising. All in, lots of trees, nice beach, Frisbee golf, super interesting cemetery right outside the property and loads of other public lands all sitting around a very nice lake. But bridges out, an entire row of non-working electric posts and weird bathroom placement leads to an overall odd use of a state park.

    Littlefield Rec Area

    Very nice park

Lots of spots with water and electric and right on the lake. Very friendly staff. 20 bucks a night. They were winterizing it during my stay and came by to tell me the services still open.

    Fifes Grove Co Park

    Peaceful and quiet campground

I had the campground to myself on 1-Nov-2025! There are 6 sites with electric service (50/30/20 amp) with some being reservable and others first come first served. Water spigots are available to fill your camper or for tent camper use by sites 1 and 6. Sites are fairly close together, so no privacy on the sides. The sites are all back-in and back up to a beautiful open prairie/forest mix. Sites can accommodate up to 27-30 foot travel trailers, maximum. Sites are gravel and not level. There is one large tent camping site. No dumping facilities are available at the park. There is a fishing pond at the entrance of the campground. The pond also has a walking trail around it. By site 6, there are two outhouses, a covered picnic shelter and a playground.

Overall, my experience here has been great. While there is a 14 day maximum stay limit, I just spent one night as I was passing through the area. Verizon cell phone and internet service was very good.

Guide to Creston

Camping sites near Creston, Iowa primarily cluster around three artificial lakes constructed for water management and recreation. Nestled in the gently rolling hills of southwest Iowa at approximately 1,300 feet above sea level, these camping areas contend with seasonal temperature fluctuations ranging from winter lows near 0°F to summer highs regularly exceeding 90°F. Waterfront camping locations often have limited cellular reception, with stronger signals typically available closer to Interstate 80 corridors.

What to do

Biking on lake trails: Green Valley State Park offers a comprehensive trail system for cyclists. "There is a nice trail to ride your bike around the lake and through the park. Don't leave your bike at home," advises camper Matt S. The paved paths connect multiple sections of the park, providing access to fishing spots and picnic areas.

Swimming options: Lake Icaria Co Park features a well-maintained swimming beach popular during summer months. One visitor notes, "Very nice place. Full hook up spots were very nice. Easy to get into, plenty of space, fire pit, picnic table, friendly & helpful park officers, lots of activities (hiking, boating, boat rentals, beach, bait shop, close to a race track in Corning, etc)."

Explore historic attractions: Winterset City Park serves as a convenient base for exploring Madison County's covered bridges. Located approximately 45 minutes from Creston, visitors mention, "The John Wayne museum and downtown are a 20 minute walk away. This is our second visit there and I would go back again." The park includes unique features like an edge maze within walking distance of camping areas.

What campers like

Clean restroom facilities: Three Mile Lake Recreation Area maintains well-kept shower buildings even during busy periods. "This park is clean with nice amenities and a beautiful lake. During the week you can almost have the place to yourself," reports one camper. The bathrooms include shower facilities with push-button water conservation systems.

Spacious campsites: Mormon Trail County Park offers camping spots with adequate room between neighbors. One visitor described the experience: "The sites are not very private but set up nice with parking for an RV, a fire ring, table and grassy area for a tent." The campground maintains a 15-dollar fee for non-electric sites.

Fishing opportunities: Pammel County Park provides river fishing access different from the lake-based options closer to Creston. A camper reports, "Fun splashing in the river catching minnows by hand. Pretty park. Easy turns with the trailer." The Middle River runs through the park, creating a 1.9-mile kayak loop that takes approximately one hour to complete when water levels permit.

What you should know

Variable hookup configurations: Site utilities at some campgrounds require extra equipment. At Pammel Park, one camper noted, "There are water hook ups, I just had to use 75 feet of hose to get to it. And the electric I had to use a 30 ft extension cord." Always verify the specific layout of your assigned site when making reservations.

Limited off-season options: While most camping areas close from November through March, South - Three Mile Co Rec Area offers year-round availability. Their cabins provide cold-weather accommodations: "Cabins are very clean the bunks allowed for four to sleep. Beautiful sunsets overlooking the lake. Fish cleaning station was also well taken care of."

Reservation requirements: Many campgrounds fill quickly during peak season. Criss Cove County Park operates on a first-come basis without reservation options. One visitor observed, "No camp host, no dumpster, no dump station. No shower. Did I mention the best part? It's remote, quiet, and nice folks camp there."

Tips for camping with families

Playground facilities: Green Valley State Park features multiple play areas for children. A visitor mentions, "It is clear that facilities make a difference. Modern restrooms and showers are always a plus for attracting family campers. My wife does not like the rustic camping when we have our children with us."

Kid-friendly water activities: Lake View Campground offers diverse recreation options beyond swimming. According to one review, "Swimming, fishing and boating even put-put golf, campsites are pretty close but if you camp with a bunch of friends you don't notice it so bad!" The campground typically has numerous children enjoying the facilities.

Multi-generational activities: Lake Orient Recreation Area provides a quieter alternative for families seeking less crowded environments. "Clean, well kept off beaten path. Has storm shelter. Fish cleaning station," notes one visitor. The electric motors-only restriction creates safer water conditions for younger swimmers and beginning boaters.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling requirements: Many campgrounds feature gravel pads that may require adjustment. At Criss Cove County Park, "The gravel campsites are adequately spaced for most RVs." Winterset City Park offers more level sites with "White rock roads and pads. It has some full hook up sites as well as water and electric sites."

Access limitations: Height restrictions affect some campgrounds in the region. Pammel County Park has a tunnel with limited clearance: "If you are over 12 ft, make sure and take the detour around the tunnel." Always check route restrictions before attempting to navigate to campgrounds with larger rigs.
