      Winterset City Park

      Lovely Campground

I just loved this campground. It has shade trees, grass, free showers and lots of room. It is part of a city park on the outskirts of Winterset. There is a dog park and one of the Bridges of Madison County is located within walking distance of the campground. This was well worth the 20 mile drive off I80. If I had known how m=nice this area was, I would have planned better and stayed here for more than one night.

      Schildberg Recreation Area

      Hidden gem

The trees at the campsites aren't mature enough for shade, but the ponds and trails more than make up for that. Full hookups, shower house and huge dog park are also onsite making this a Cass County hidden gem. Camp host is great and and you're close to old downtown.

      Nishna Bend Rec Area

Nice no frills park. NO PETS….

I didn’t stay here but did scout it out. Small park by the NishnaBotna river. I did see a camper there with his dog but website specifically says no pets.

      Prairie Rose State Park Campground

      The most windy experience ever

We showed up easter sunday when everyone in the loop left except one van, so it was pretty empty. But the wind was so intense an constant. Probably about 20 to 25mph wind all day and night. Temp was mid 70s to 80s. Well kept sites and the park ranger came through to check reservations were correct on the posts. Random people did come through the loop area to either hang out or go to the trail, which alerted our dogs everytime. We even thought some lady did a drug deal by grabbing an orange bag from one of the electric posts then left, pretty weird. We stayed on site 81 next to water which was essential. Big lake close by to fish which I'm guessing the only thing to do here other than walk the trail. I ran the trail for a workout, it's all grass around the lake. All the sites are pretty close together, about 20 to 30 apart so of you like that then there you go, but we wanted space for our dogs and privacy. Stayed 2 nights. All views of corn.

      Prairie Rose State Park Campground

      Peace & quiet

Reserved electric unit 090 for the weekend, which had a scenic corn field for a backdrop - this is Iowa! Paved roads, level gravel sites, wide & mowed trails, clean pit toilets and a layout that isn’t too cramped. The pond has multiple shoreline fishing spots with picnic tables and a cleaning station. Basic playground in front of the beach which is a short drive or a ~1 mile trail walk away.

      Lake Binder Co Park

      Nice city park; reasonable price

This is a 76 acre lake 1 mile northeast of Corning, Iowa. Electric sites are $20 a night or $800 for the season. There's a dump station and several water spigot. A bathroom with cold running water. There are also several portapotties around the lake. A fire ring and a picnic table at every site. We have seen people catching bass. Boats allowed with Electric motors only.

      Criss Cove County Park

      Serene Small Lake Campground

Criss Cove’s campground sits on a hill overlooking a small lake. It is a generally quiet and serene campground. It is just off of US Highway 169. The lake is good for fishing and kayaking. The gravel campsites are adequately spaced for most RVs.

The campground is located in Madison County Iowa (of “The Bridges of Madison County” book and movie fame). It is located about 15 minutes south of Winterset Iowa. Winterset is the birthplace of John Wayne and the town has a museum dedicated to him. There is also a county historical museum complex and the Iowa quilt museum.

      Beautiful Park

These Iowa state parks are extremely clean and well taken care of. The lake is huge with multiple trails that the kids loved. Playground was directly behind us which is a plus for us.

      Lake Icaria Co Park

      Great place that wasn’t crowded

Very nice place. Full hook up spots were very nice. Easy to get into, plenty of space, fire pit, picnic table, friendly & helpful park officers, lots of activities (hiking, boating, boat rentals, beach, bait shop, close to a race track in Corning, etc). We went the weekend after Memorial Day & there were plenty of spots. Quiet & family friendly. Even have food trucks that serve over by the beach!

    Guide to Corning

Camping areas near Corning, Iowa span Adams County and several neighboring regions with elevations ranging from 1,000 to 1,300 feet. Summer temperatures typically average 75-85°F with humidity levels often exceeding 60%. Winter camping is available at certain locations, though restroom facilities may be limited to non-heated options during colder months.

    What to do

Biking around lakes: At Lake Anita State Park Campground, a 4-mile paved recreation trail circles the entire 171-acre lake. "Good for walking, running, or biking. The lake is beautiful, and we also saw people boating, kayaking, and fishing," notes Lee D.

Movies under stars: Lake Anita offers family entertainment during summer months. "On saturdays during the summer they do Disney movies and free popcorn," writes Laura B., making it an ideal evening activity after a day of outdoor recreation.

Disc golf course: Lake of Three Fires State Park provides additional recreational options beyond water activities. "It has a great frisbee golf course that my boys loved playing," says Caralee D., highlighting activities that don't require water access.

    What campers like

Clean facilities: Mormon Trail County Park receives praise for its maintenance standards. "Mormon Trail is absolutely beautiful. It is a very small state park with only a couple tent sites/camper sites, so it is not over populated," writes Abby G., noting the uncrowded environment.

Beach access: Several parks feature swimming areas with sand beaches. "The lake has a very large, mostly shallow, swimming area, the water is absolutely perfect, along with a big sandy beach area," Abby G. reports about Mormon Trail, creating an opportunity for water-based recreation.

Seasonal quietness: Viking Lake State Park Campground offers varying levels of solitude depending on timing. "During the week it is really quiet. I think most of the action here happens on the weekend based on the size of the park and the campgrounds," Matt S. observes, suggesting midweek visits for those seeking tranquility.

    What you should know

Cell service varies: Connection reliability differs significantly between campgrounds. At Mormon Trail County Park, "AT&T has absolutely no service there, but US cellular does," according to Abby G., while at another location, "I was only able to get cell service where camping sites 14-17 are located," notes Tammie C.

Site spacing considerations: Green Valley State Park Campground sites may feel crowded during peak periods. "Pretty grounds with woodland coverage on all sides in addition to the lake. We visited in August and realized it was prime family vacation time before school starts up again, so a little crowded and noisy. Spots are pretty close together too," Laura W. shares.

Water quality changes: Lakes in the area may experience seasonal algae. A visitor to Lake Anita noted, "Swimming beach was under watch for Blue Algae," indicating the importance of checking current conditions before planning water activities.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Select campsites near play areas for convenience with children. "We stayed at #70 which was a full hookup. It backed up the playground and bathrooms. Everything was super clean," John K. comments about their stay at Lake Anita.

Hiking difficulty levels: Lake of Three Fires State Park offers trails suitable for various ages. "The trails are nicely marked with 'you are here' maps so you don't get lost. There are beautiful views of the Lake from the far side where you can see clear across to the campgrounds," notes a visitor, making it easier to plan appropriate walks with children.

Wildlife viewing: At Lake Anita, "If you like birds there are bird houses built all around the park," Matt S. mentions, creating opportunities for wildlife education and observation for young campers.

    Tips from RVers

Arrival timing: For pet friendly camping near Corning, Iowa, midweek arrivals significantly improve site selection. At Lake Binder Co Park, "Electric sites are $20 a night or $800 for the season. There's a dump station and several water spigot[s]," notes Robert L., providing budget-conscious options for extended stays.

Road conditions: Access to some campgrounds requires preparation for dust or difficult terrain. At Wilson Lake County Park, a visitor reported, "Van and bikes covered in fine white dust from road," indicating the need for vehicle preparation when accessing more remote campgrounds.

Hook-up reliability: Electrical service specifications are important to verify before arrival. One visitor to Hacklebarney Woods County Park notes that despite being a smaller county park, it offers full hook-up sites with "thirty-amp hookups" and "water hookups," making it suitable for RVs requiring these amenities.
