    Devine Wildlife Area

    Free and fairly primitive

Dispersed camping really. You can bring a big rig in. No really prepared sites. Maybe 5 places you could set up. No water, no electric, no toilet. Swampy area nearby so bring mosquito repellent. But the price is right.

    Korte's Checkers Welcome Campground

Great value as Passport America member

This is a small private campground that offers a quiet nights stay.  Site size was moderate with some shade, a fire ring, picnic table, on a level gravel pad.  $20 per Passport America members for FHU is sweet.  The grounds were well cared for and was not to far from the interstate but far enough away that there was little noise.

    Great Campground

This is a great campground in Mankato, MN.  The sites are huge and offer water and electric.  The shower house/bathrooms were decent - a little outdated, but not too bad.  There was also a portable toilet near our site.  We wish there was sewer, but we understand that being so close to the river this may not be possible.  We will definitely stay here again if we are in the area.

    Clear Lake State Park Campground

Surprisingly quiet campground on a summer weekend

We tend to stay at campgrounds during the off or shoulder season for a quieter experience so it was with some apprehension that we reserved this campground for a summer weekend so that we could meet friends for Paddlefest. We were happy to discover that despite being a full campground, it was quiet at almost all hours of the day and night. It was, however, an entirely different story on the lake itself, where boats gathered all day to party!

There is little separation between the sites but there are trees located throughout, some of which provide shade to the site. The camper pads were a mix of dirt and gravel and mostly level. We were lucky to snag Site 34 (reserved about three months in advance) – it was on the end, making it a much larger site than the interior sites (all end sites in our section were larger) and we had plenty of shade trees, a welcome relief on a very hot weekend.

The paved roads leading to the sites are very narrow and would appear to be one-way but are not designated as such, resulting in some confusion. The site numbers are only listed on one side, even though most of the sites appeared to be pull-through.

The restrooms and showers were clean and had soap and (dated) air dryers.

Overall, we had a very pleasant two-night stay even though we were prepared for a different experience.

Ambrose A. Call State Park Campground

    Mixed bag

Small campground. Not busy while I was here. Sites have electricity, but water spigots are shared. Free firewood is provided. Nice oak trees. No privacy between sites. Pit toilets. No showers. Park is very nice with hiking trails and a Frisbee Golf course. $18 per night.

Marble Beach State Recreation Area Campground

Van camping here was just okay

Camped in Site #59 on Oct. 6-7, 2023. Our site had a fire ring, table, as well as electric & water. Spirit Lake is behind the site, although there was no lake access from there. Nice hearing the water lapping on shore. Registering for a site was a little confusing. There was a friendly host in the campground. Our site sloped down toward the lake; had to use our traction boards to level the van as best we can. No privacy between sites. The 6 room restroom/shower was clean. Overall, the campground was large and well maintained. It had an RV park feel to it, which is not our preferred type of camping. I believe folks in larger rigs will be comfortable here.

    Blue Earth City Campground

Just off the interstate, great place to stop for the night.

Sites can accommodate tents or up to 50' RVs. Lots of grass, bike/walking paths and dogs on leashes welcome. 14 Sites now, with plans for 10+ Sites built this summer. On site host, so typically quiet and friendly. One price, $25/night.

    Pilot Knob State Park Campground

Camping in the woods near town

Located by New Ulm, MN this campground has plenty of activities in the park or very near the park. Plenty of hiking trails, playground for the kids, and an amazing sand bottom swimming pond surrounded by sand beach. Golf is also nearby at The New Ulm Country Club which is open to the public. Nice level sites with electric, picnic tables and fire rings.

    Smith Lake County Park

    Good value camping

This is a pretty quiet campground in my experience. For $15 you get water/electric sites with access to bathrooms and showers. Dogs are allowed on leash. Pretty nice playground. The beach area has been taken over by geese though.

The region features prairie landscapes interspersed with small lakes and wildlife areas where campers can set up tents. Most camping areas remain open from spring through fall, with winter camping limited by weather conditions that typically include cold temperatures and occasional snow.

What to do

What campers like

What you should know

Limited camping spots: Rice Lake Wildlife Management Area has restricted space for setting up tents. Skip H. explains, "When you come in on the dirt road, it hooks to the right, and you'll come upon a dirt cul-de-sac. On the right, you'll see a grassy area set into the woods where you could camp. Other than that, your parking in the perimeter."

Variable water conditions: Water quality in some locations fluctuates seasonally. Kevin T. reports about Big Wall Lake, "This place was really bad probably because of the low water levels. In very hot temperatures the lake would have a smell."

Drinking water access: Iowa Lake Co Campground provides potable water sources for campers. Bradley B. notes, "It is right in a lake, has water, and a nice vault toilet."

Tips for camping with families

Skip H. cautions, "There's enough room that virtually any size camper could navigate into this spot, but if there are other people, that will really complicate your life."

Tent camping preference: For RV travelers also carrying tents, Iowa Lake Co Campground offers better experiences for tent setups than RVs. Bradley B. recommends, "I highly recommend for tents. RVs not so much."
