    Johnny Appleseed Campground

    Looked like a ghost town

This small, well-kept Campground is a Fort Wayne city park surrounded by industrial & commercial businesses. The Park is clean with the most modern, clean shower/bath house I’ve seen. Unfortunately, the restroom is located across the street from the campground. The sites were occupied by large RVs but we only saw 2 people sitting outside - no campfires, no cooking, no campers. This was just an over night stopover for us so we didn’t care. I suppose this Campground is used by seasonal workers who just sleep & eat dinner there at the end of their workday. The Campground is never dark with streetlights and and the ambient light from surrounding businesses. I’m sure this campground serves a purpose, just not my purpose. This is definitely NOT a destination.

    Love it here

Totally delightful, some full timers and part timers, many parks and benches to sit on, nice disk golf course. Showers bathroom game room and general store. Nice owners they have church on Sunday. Hardly hear the humm of the hwy . Beautiful views of the surrounding farms . Fire pit and table. We used electric and water hook up . Free dump and dumpsters. Laundry unit available. Super family oriented.

Natural Springs Resort - RV Park, Campground and Recreation Destination

Glad we checked it out, but don't feel the desire to come back.

Advertises heated pool and splash pad, but pool was not heated and colder than lake(major bummer- as this was a major draw for us) and splash pad is still under construction- not new and ready for 2021. Lake is nice and clear, pretty cold(would love to feel it in August or September). Fun to jump into and overall pretty. Wibit should be included or at least offer 1/2 hour slots. Everyone is very nice, close to cute coffee shop and stores in Richmond. Park is in need of updates, just feels used- but can tell that is in process. No COVID restrictions other than"stay distanced" sign, but our adults were vaccinated and we just tried to keep our kids distanced. Good WiFi, everything fairly clean, nice little store w/ inexpensive ice cream. No"bar& grill" as advertised. Newer playground structure, but for younger kids- no swings.

    Wildwood Outdoor Escape

    Surprisingly pleasant!

This was our second stay here…campground is surrounded by corn fields but park itself is quite picturesque with mature trees, a lake, and very well-manicured grounds. Many sites have long-term occupants but overnighters just as welcome. Main bathrooms are up front and clean and modern while rustic but quite nice enough toilets located at back end. A small pool, mini-golf and recreation center also on site. Owners are nice people who go extra mile to provide a friendly, family atmosphere for residents.

    Kamp Modoc

What would you expect from Camping?

Do you have kids? They have it covered, from playground, to lake with inflatables, train rides, Holiday fun.

Adults? I see Cornhole every weekend, Campfires, Holiday Events, Golf Cart Parades, DJ's or Live Bands on the weekend, Friendly Seasonal Folks always up for a good time.

Ameneties? Bath Houses, Laundry, General Store, Small Grill and Pizza Oven. (Pizza is not half bad either).

Amish make their presence felt on a few weekends throughout the season, from fresh Bakery Goods to a Healthy Sized Sausage Egg Biscuit. (You won't be disappointed)

Food Trucks on a few weekends throughout the season.

    Wapakoneta KOA

    Impressive!

Super clean KOA with level gravel sites (no weeds popping up through gravel!) 2 Fenced dog areas, nice playground, game room, giant chess set outside, clean pool.. you name it, this KOA has it! I was impressed when Mike helped me back into my site.. it had a little wooden deck with a picnic table (I did not request nor pay extra for this perk!) I noticed something that I've not seen at other campgrounds: each of the waste connection covers had a 'fake' rock over the top. Very clever! The KOA is very tidy and well kept.

Nice folks here. I would highly recommend it!

    Cornerstone Campground

    Lovely RV resort

I love it here. The owners are wonderful and the resort is beautiful. Lots are level and include a picnic table and fire pit, with nice space between sites. The campsite is immaculate and well appointed. There is a pretty pond, pool, and many activities for kids. I enjoyed the peaceful ambience and walking trails through the trees.

    KOA Campground Bluffton

    Nice place to stay

Quiet place with super friendly people. There are laundry facilities on site and surprisingly good WiFi and were even in the back!

They have a pool, basketball area, playground, dog run area, and a volleyball net(but the ball is flat). Nicer than a lot of places we’ve stayed.

Guide to Portland

Near Portland, Indiana, campers can find a mix of small city parks and state recreation areas with both basic and upscale camping options. The area features mostly flat terrain with elevation around 900 feet above sea level and experiences four distinct seasons. Summer highs typically reach 80-85°F, making water recreation popular at several nearby lakes and reservoirs.

What to do

Water activities at Salamonie Lake: Lost Bridge West Recreation Area offers multiple water-based options beyond standard camping. "They have a awesome Mariana ppl are friendly clean showers bathrooms access to lake," notes Randy R. The campground features various lake view sites, though not all provide direct water access.

Fishing opportunities: Kamp Modoc provides fishing in its small lake. "Beach and swimming area with water inflatables, and area to fish if you enjoy fishing. Several activities for kids," writes Margo B. The campground operates seasonally from mid-April through mid-October.

Mini golf and recreation: Natural Springs Resort offers numerous activities beyond just camping. "Fun to jump into and overall pretty. Wibit should be included or at least offer 1/2 hour slots. Everyone is very nice, close to cute coffee shop and stores in Richmond," explains Windi H. The resort features a spring-fed quarry with clear water.

Urban exploration: Johnny Appleseed Campground provides a base for exploring Fort Wayne. "The park is connected to the river greenway which is a beautiful walk along the river!" reports Haylie M. This urban camping option gives access to downtown attractions while still offering riverside recreation.

What campers like

Clean bathrooms: Multiple campgrounds near Portland feature exceptionally clean facilities. At Johnny Appleseed Campground, "Bathrooms are A+ with a code for only campers," according to Felicia. Another camper notes, "They have the best bathrooms that I have ever seen in the campgrounds. You can even look out at the skylight at the sky."

Family-friendly environments: Kil-So-Quah provides a peaceful setting with family amenities. "A nice quiet get away!" reports Tina N. The campground includes both RV sites with hookups and more secluded tent sites in wooded areas.

Spacious sites: Many campers appreciate the roomier sites at certain campgrounds. At Lost Bridge West, "Nice size campsite, which good shade. The campsite did have a bigger than expected slope, but nothing horrible," notes Burns G. Different areas of the campground offer varying levels of privacy and amenities.

On-site food options: Wapakoneta KOA provides convenient food choices right at the campground. "They deliver pizza too! The store has a lot of different items, even socks!" shares Stefanie C. This convenience allows campers to stay on-site rather than traveling for meals.

What you should know

Water quality concerns: Some lakes in the area have water quality issues. At Grand Lake St. Marys, multiple campers mention algae blooms and swimming restrictions. One notes, "The entire lake stinks of pig poop. All the air smells like poo. You feel like you are breathing feces when you approach the water."

Limited WiFi: Wildwood Outdoor Escape advertises WiFi, but connectivity may be unreliable. "He is good people are fine they publish that they offer free Wi-Fi however the Wi-Fi is so spotty it barely works," reports Bill M. Consider bringing alternative connectivity options if internet access is important.

Payment methods: Some campgrounds have specific payment requirements. At Wildwood Outdoor Escape, "Payment needs to be by cash or check which I thought was strange in this day and age," notes Sammii D. Verify accepted payment methods before arrival to avoid complications.

Seasonal operations: Many glamping options close to Portland, Indiana operate only part of the year. Most canvas tent and luxury options typically run from spring through fall. Kamp Modoc, for example, operates from April 15 to October 15.

Tips for camping with families

Pool access rules: Wapakoneta KOA has specific rules for pool usage that families should note. "Weirdly, the pool closed from 4 to 5, leaving us with nowhere to go on a 90+ degree day," mentions one camper about another campground. Call ahead to verify pool hours and any age or diaper restrictions.

Playground proximity: Select sites near recreational areas for easier supervision. "The sites were close to the pool and playground. The sites were pull through which was nice for having young kids. Could sit at our spot and watch our kids at the playground," notes a camper about their experience.

Water inflatables: Kamp Modoc offers water activities designed specifically for children. "Pond with inflatables, water toys available for use. The camp store is large and offers food. There were many activities put on by the campground," shares Amy H. These features can keep children entertained throughout the day.

Weekend crowds: Kil-So-Quah can get busy on weekends and holidays. "During the weekends it gets packed. Only 60 sites so show up early if you want one. No reservations so first come gets it," warns Darrell B. Plan to arrive early or on weekdays for a more relaxed experience.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Be prepared for uneven sites at some campgrounds. At Lost Bridge West, campers mention, "The campsite did have a bigger than expected slope, but nothing horrible." Bring leveling blocks even for sites advertised as level.

Close quarters: Natural Springs Resort has tight sites in some areas. "If you like your awning to touch your neighbor's camper then this place is for you," notes Richard J. Call ahead to request sites with more space between neighbors if privacy is important.

Pull-through availability: Some campgrounds offer convenient pull-through sites for easier setup. "The sites were pull through which was nice for having young kids," mentions a camper. These sites typically fill quickly, so reserve well in advance during peak season.

Utility connections: When booking glamping options near Portland, Indiana, verify which hookups are available. Many sites offer both 30 and 50 amp service, but not all include sewer connections. At Natural Springs Resort, "Full service campground. 30, 50 am full hook ups. Water and electric only hook ups, primitive RV and tent sites," explains Jeremiah G.
