Best Equestrian Camping near Derby, IN

Youngs Creek Horse Camp accommodates both equestrian and standard camping with spacious sites featuring fire rings and picnic tables. The primitive campground provides vault toilets and potable water access via a pump near the facilities. Horse owners appreciate the well-designed layout with ample room for horse trailers at each site. The campground remains peaceful except during organized trail rides when it fills quickly with equestrians. Sites are generous in size with gravel parking areas and level tent pads. Secluded camping spots include hitching posts for horses, though the campground lacks dedicated corrals.

The 5.9-mile trail loop connects directly back to the campground, offering convenient access for riders without needing to trailer horses between rides. Come Again Horse Camp, located near O'Bannon Woods State Park, provides the area's only dedicated horse corrals along with drinking water and fire rings. Both campgrounds connect to extensive bridle trail networks throughout Hoosier National Forest. The surrounding terrain features moderate hills with technical single-track sections that give horses a good workout. Ticks can be problematic during warmer months, requiring preventative measures for both horses and humans. French Lick is approximately 30 minutes away for supplies, while Paoli (about 5 miles from Youngs Creek) offers a Walmart for emergency provisions and horse supplies.

    Youngs Creek Horse Camp

    Another quiet day in Indiana.

I had been planning a trip to Youngs Creek for over a month and was happy to finally get there. YC horse camp is well laid out and fairly spacious, apparently only for the random hikers and hunters. I stayed at here for a couple of days, planning on a longer visit, and wasn't dissatisfied. It sports a good-sized pavilion and well-maintained his and hers vault toilets. The camp sites were generous in size with gravel parking, fairly level pads, picnic tables, and a fire ring. The only downside, besides the lack of horses, was an access road to adjacent to the camping area that is well used through the evening.
I'll be making a return in the spring to watch for the return of the equestrians.

    O'Bannon Woods State Park Campground

Well kept and tons to see and do

The park is well kept and organized. There are a ton of sites to visit and see. If you like hiking or mountain biking this is for you! Horse people love it also. The campground is near the trail to the old abandoned bridge which is well worth the hike. The fire tower has a commanding view. If you are not enjoying this park, not much else in Indiana will make you happy. Extra points: experienced cavers will enjoy the number of caves. These are by permit only however and novice non cavers should take a proper class and go with experts. There are multiple show caves in the area you can get a basic tour of also.

Horine Reservation Camping at Jefferson County Memorial Forest

Know the flight path schedule for UPS and you'll have a GREAT TIME!

Tent sites have so many trees surrounding them. If you're looking for more privacy anything off of the loop will do just fine. We stayed at FS1 and could only catch glimpses of other campers, although you do hear and see folks on trails frequently. The ground is SUPER SOFT due to all the pine needles that have fallen over the years. We moved our tent around a bit to get it anchored firmly for expected wind at night... some spots were to soft, but it made for good sleeping!

Firewood was ordered in advance when I booked the site, delivered to our spot while we were setting up.

We took our dog and he had a great time(on leash of course!).

Restrooms are porta-style but hand sanitizer was everywhere and everything was VERY CLEAN.

Since the camp sites are behind a locked gate there is no through traffic aside from other campers. Very nice!

Going back this upcoming weekend as well! Camped this past weekend at Group Site 3. You could fit 6 tents here and still have space. Couldn't hear any other campers aside from some jerks at Group Site 1 that decided to start howling and barking around 11pm as well as playing a radio very loudly past 9:30pm. Couldn't hear the radio unless I walked up to the porta-potties though.

Even with all of the planes overhead from folks leaving town after Derby the tree cover dampened the noise wonderfully. Love love love camping at JCMF.

    Youngs Creek Horse Camp

    Off the beaten path

Site accommodates both horse, drive in and walk-in camping. There’s a privy and water on site. Campsites have fire rings and picnic tables. There is a trail that loops back to the site for easy hiking access.

    O'Bannon Woods State Park Campground

    Rain, rain on my shoulder

Nice campground, needs some structural updates. Mostly shaded spots. Not all pads are level or very wide. Some of the tent sites are a challenge to get to and use. Minus a star due to no hot water, I would have been happy with warm but no luck.

Several trails in walking, horse or bike riding distance. Some direct access from the campground.

You can set up here and have plenty to do without ever leaving the park.

Corydon is within half an hour, Louisville about an hour.

    Otter Creek Park Campground

Good hikes with river views. Not a lot of solitude.

My husband and I camped here in the May to escape Derby in Louisville. It's close enough to the city that it makes for an easy get-away. Even if you're not camping the hiking is pretty incredible and none of the trails are really to strenuous for an experienced hiker compared to other trails in the region.

This isn't the most quite campground you're going to find. There is an RV area and a loop for tent camping, the sites are fairly close together with some only having as little as a few saplings or briars between sites. The loop itself is a bulky gravel road that is VERY NOISY when campers drive on it, or in our case... a child drives their Barbie Power Wheels up and down the road until 10pm in the dark.

That being said.... it's close to the city. It's inexpensive and the firewood bundles are sizable. Our site didn't have a picnic bench, just a fire ring but the ground was mostly grassy and very level. It was a comfortable site and the majority of them looked pretty similar so it's hard to say there's a "best site" for privacy on the loop.  Our site was on the road leading up to the loop and those sites seem best since a few don't have campers across from them and they are spaced out slightly more than the sites on the actual loop... although you're further from water.

Deam Lake State Recreation Area Campground

    Nice Campground, Pretty Lake

This campground is very family-friendly and fun. There are horse trails, a beach, and great water for swimming/kayaking/canoeing. It is pet friendly as well. The bath house in our area was older but fairly clean. We felt like there was good spacing between the sites, and we weren’t too close to our neighbors. Beautiful in the Fall!

Deam Lake State Recreation Area Campground

    First time camping

Stayed in D04. Had 30 amp plus 20 amp hookups. Picnic table. 15 pieces of firewood for 5 plus tax. Friends stayed in the chickadee cabin and d03. Neat cabins all wood with Portable AC.

A few hikes. Horse camping so was cool to see the horses. A beach location and a few fishing spots.

The lake doesn’t allow non electric motors so waters were calm. Caught some bluegills.

    Public restrooms and showers.

Ice in the area cheapest at the truck stops and gas stations 2 10lbs for 5 bucks.

Would stop again if in the area.

Guide to Derby

Equestrian campgrounds near Derby, Indiana offer several options for horse enthusiasts and traditional campers alike. Sites typically feature hitching posts or corrals for horses, with access to extensive trail networks. The region sits within the hills of southern Indiana at elevations between 400-900 feet, creating moderately challenging terrain for riders. Summer temperatures average 75-85°F, while spring and fall drop to 55-70°F.

What to do

Trail riding on bridle trails: Connect to extensive networks throughout Hoosier National Forest from Hoosier National Forest Jackpine Loop Campground. "The Tipsaw Lake Trail is 5.9 miles of small hilled, technical single track trail that gives you a chance to enjoy the woods (and ticks). The trail is not marked very well around the boat ramp and beach area so it may take some searching to find it if your not familiar," notes Shelly S.

Fishing opportunities: Cast a line at multiple lakes within a short drive. "Plenty of fishing along Blue River," reports Corey T. about O'Bannon Woods State Park Campground, which offers diverse water access points for anglers seeking various species.

Hiking exploration: Discover trails of varying difficulties across the region. "We had a wonderful time and plan on returning many times to hike all the trails," says Stacey S. about O'Bannon Woods State Park. The park features multiple trail options with varied terrain for all skill levels.

What campers like

Spacious, private sites: Enjoy generous camping areas with natural separation at Hoosier National Forest North Face Loop Campground. "Moderately wooded, well spaced, basic sites that provide privacy and shade. There are walk in sites as well with picnic table and fire ring," writes Shelly S. These sites provide a genuine forest camping experience.

Clean facilities: Campgrounds maintain good hygiene standards despite their rustic nature. "Bathrooms are super clean and automated. Showers are individual showers with their own dressing area," says Cathleen T. about Jackpine Loop Campground, which receives consistent praise for maintenance.

Horse-friendly design: Come Again Horse Camp offers the area's only dedicated horse corrals, making it ideal for equestrians wanting secure containment for their animals rather than just hitching posts. It connects to bridle trails throughout Hoosier National Forest for direct riding access.

What you should know

Tick prevention essential: The region has significant tick populations during warmer months. "The tick's here seem like the Infantry, swarming the objective from all side's. Bring your bug stuff!" warns Shelly S. about North Face Loop Campground. Apply repellent regularly to both humans and horses.

Water access varies: Some campgrounds have pumps while others have more developed systems. "Throughout the campground are potable water spigots that you can hook up to and add water to your tank," explains Derek J. about O'Bannon Woods, highlighting the need to plan water usage.

Seasonal considerations: Most equestrian facilities operate spring through fall. "Youngs Creek Horse Camp accommodates both equestrian and standard camping with spacious sites featuring fire rings and picnic tables," while "Secluded camping spots include hitching posts for horses, though the campground lacks dedicated corrals," notes Michael U.

Tips for camping with families

Beach access for cooling off: Deam Lake State Recreation Area Campground offers swimming options during hot months. "A beach location and a few fishing spots. The lake doesn't allow non electric motors so waters were calm," says John G., making it ideal for families with children who want water recreation.

Nature centers for education: Several parks feature educational opportunities. "Great nature center w ranger tours," mentions Donald S. about O'Bannon Woods State Park, providing learning experiences that complement outdoor adventures.

Family-friendly trails: Choose appropriate hiking routes based on age and ability. "The kids love the pool and trails. The campground sites are spacious and lots of shade in the summer," reports Audria J. at O'Bannon Woods, highlighting options suitable for younger campers.

Tips from RVers

Site selection crucial: Review site dimensions before booking. "Not all pads are level or very wide. Some of the tent sites are a challenge to get to and use," cautions Shelly S. about O'Bannon Woods, a consideration important for larger rigs.

Utilities information: Confirm hookup availability before arrival. "50,30,20 amp service in one box. There was no water at the site though. Throughout the campground are potable water spigots that you can hook up to and add water to your tank," explains Derek J. about Spring Mill State Park Campground, noting the importance of verifying utility access.

Access road considerations: Some horse camps have challenging approaches for larger vehicles. "The campground is at the back of the park so you do have about a 5 minute drive to get to the main highway," mentions Derek J. about O'Bannon Woods, highlighting access considerations.
