Rend Lake spans 19,000 acres of water with over 160 miles of shoreline across Jefferson and Franklin Counties in Illinois. Campgrounds operate from March through November, with limited winter availability. Water temperatures range from 40°F in winter to 85°F in summer, creating distinct seasonal camping experiences across the lake's diverse recreational areas.
What to do
Fishing access: Gun Creek Campground offers direct lake access for anglers with multiple fishing spots near campsites. "Great rates and even better campsites. We got there late and had no problems finding a great campsite right next to the lake," reports Jonathan W.
Wildlife watching: North Sandusky Campground provides habitat viewing of local birds and deer. "Bring binoculars for egrets and herons on the lake," suggests Mandi G. The campground backs up to both lake and wooded areas, creating diverse wildlife observation opportunities.
Biking trails: South Sandusky Campground connects to the extensive paved trail system. "There is a dump station, flush toilets, showers, a sand beach, boat ramp, 2 picnic shelters, a paved bike trail, and playgrounds," notes Joel R. Trails link multiple recreation areas around the lake perimeter.
What campers like
Lake views: South Marcum Campground offers premium waterfront vistas from select sites. "If I was in any other spot this would probably be a 4/5, but spot 56 has a crazy lake view and is on the tip of an outlook with pretty nice privacy!" shares Eli R.
Site spacing: North Sandusky Campground provides roomier sites than typical lakeside campgrounds. "The sites all seem to be fairly well maintained and roomy. Site 42 is very spacious," confirms Jason A., noting the balance between privacy and amenities.
Clean facilities: Gun Creek Campground maintains well-serviced bathroom facilities. "Nice, large, well thought out campground. Lots of trees, paved sites, bathrooms, showers, and well maintained," reports Moe F., highlighting the campground's cleanliness standards even during busy periods.
What you should know
Site leveling: Many Rend Lake sites require adjustment for RVs and larger setups. "Overall a great stay, very busy as it was full the entire time we were there while the state park down the road was empty. Absolutely must check how level the spots are before you book, as lots of sites are over 4 inch incline," advises Never Sitting S. at Gun Creek.
Full hookup availability: South Sandusky Campground offers select premium sites with complete services. "All brand new. They have redone this whole place, really nice, very clean," reports Jim L., referencing recent upgrades to the hookup systems and facilities.
Noise considerations: Benton KOA experiences highway noise due to proximity to I-57. "Yes, there is highway noise. It's a KOA. Convenience of being easy off an interstate has its tradeoffs. That said, excellent staff, clean, professional KOA," notes Tom B., highlighting the accessibility versus noise balance.
Tips for camping with families
Beach access: South Sandusky Campground offers a dedicated swimming area with sandy beach. "We love the large beach. The campsites have a nice set up and are a decent size. The kids loved the playground. There were kids everywhere and everyone was very friendly!" shares Missy D.
Playground options: Several campgrounds feature play equipment for different age groups. At Archway RV Park, "Sites are nice, although all sites face each other meaning you will be 5-10 feet from your neighbors if you are sitting out front," mentions James N., adding that the "nice playground and dog park as well as a pond" provide family recreation.
Wildlife encounters: Prepare for local wildlife that may visit campsites. "There was also a little skunk walking around this morning," warns Brennan M. from Gun Creek Campground, suggesting families should secure food and take appropriate precautions with small children.
Tips from RVers
Dogwood loop advantages: South Sandusky Campground's Dogwood section contains the premium full hookup sites. "Most sites here offer water and electric (50/30/20 AMP), while the Dogwood loop features several full hookup sites in its upper section," explains MickandKarla W., noting the specific location of the most desired RV sites.
Backing considerations: RV sites often require careful positioning due to terrain features. "Note that the loop has low-sloping ditches on both sides of the road, so precise backing is needed to land on the asphalt pad," advises MickandKarla W. at South Sandusky Campground.
Extended stay options: For longer visits, Gun Creek Campground offers flexible arrangements. "Gun Creek has many sites for all campers. For cheap you get a simple site with electric or for not too much more there are sites with water and sewage dump," notes Dave S., highlighting the cost-effective options for various camping durations.
