Illini Campground — Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area

    Great family campground

We LOVE Hazlet! We have a popup camper and camp here often. It's a huge campground with a smaller reservable section and an extensive first come, first serve section. There are usually always spaces available. Sites are pretty level, are gravel, wooded, and spacious. There are several 'loops'' of sites that extend out and have water views. The shower houses are clean and air conditioned, there's a nice camp store that serves breakfast and basic lunches, and there is a nice large zero entry pool for a $5 fee on weekends. The campground hosts are sprinkled througout the grounds and are always friendly and accommodating. They have a huge Halloween event every year where people decorate their sites (pretty extensively) and there's a haunted house, then kids trick or treat from site to site. The campground also provides pumpkin painting contests and other fun activities. Better get there at least a week in advance for the halloweeen festivities- it fills up!

Lots of space by a Lake

RV or tent, book online at Recreation.Gov not all spots are level. Electric on most but not all have water. Campfire area and picnic table provided. Bathhouse is clean and park areas are all clean, dump station on site. We will be back and book closer to the lake in a level site.

    Rend lake south sandusky

South Sandusky is a very nice campground with lots of trees, concrete pad, fire pit, playground, and bathroom facilities. It is wheelchair accessible and walking distance from the lake where you can swim, fish, boat, go tubing or just walk the trails.

    Harmonie State Park Campground

    Top Flight State Park

This is a huge state park! There are lots and lots of campsites in this state park bordering the Wabash River. Sites are divided into smallish areas some for tents, some for RVs and some mixed. Lots of trees for shade. Bathhouses in each area with showers and toilets. Very clean & well maintained. Some areas with children playgrounds. The park has multiple picnic areas and shelters. There are a couple of ponds. There is a boat launch at the Wabash River. There is a good size swimming pool (though closed at my visit for the pandemic). Park sells firewood for individual fire pits at each site. Electric hookups at most tent sites. Water spigots near each bathhouse.

    South Sandusky Campground

    Amazing View

We love tent camping at South Sandusky. many of the site are right on the lake and the sunrise and sunsets are always gorgeous. they have quiet hours from 10-6 and the bathrooms and showers are always really clean (but there are still usually lots of small insects). It’s also just a short drive from the South Sandusky swimming beach. It’s sometimes pretty rocky in the water so we usually wear water shoes. If you camp for the hiking though this isn’t my favorite site. There are lots of bike trails but for just hiking there are much better places.

Illini Campground — Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area

    Beautiful lake

We had reservations nearly one month ahead, and the campground was full, yet quiet and restful. Our site only had electric hookup, and there were two pit toilets in the cul de sac, and we never found the showers that were supposedly on site. The acorns were falling, and we nearly jumped out of bed when they struck our roof! No fault of the campground, but a mild annoyance nevertheless. There is a camp store but we didn't visit it. The nearby town of Carlyle has a Walmart and several fast food eateries, but only one independent restaurant, Mexican , which came highly recommended. We met campers that return here often, but it was our first time. We would stay again if in the area.

    Okaw Valley Kampground

Ok for a one night stay

The owners are friendly. The pool is well-maintained and pleasant. The campsite is an old KOA frozen in time. It's clean but dated. Water and electricity are available on site with an old picnic table. Only one bathhouse (toilet, shower) is a bit far from our site.

Guide to Johnsonville

Johnsonville, Illinois, sits in the heart of southern Illinois at an elevation of approximately 500 feet. The area experiences hot, humid summers with temperatures often exceeding 90°F and mild winters where freezing temperatures are common. The region's rolling hills and numerous lakes create numerous waterfront camping opportunities within a 30-mile radius of Johnsonville, with seasonal closures typically running from late November through mid-March.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area offers a variety of fishing spots on Forbes Lake. "This state park is a basic but nice state park facility. The tent sites were basic but fairly level and clean. Most of the sites had fire pits and picnic table," notes Chad K., who visited during rainy weather.

Swimming areas: Gun Creek provides access to Carlyle Lake with designated swimming areas. "It was a good view, also pretty RV heavy, but tent friendly. Grassy area, fire pit, stone table," reports Brennan M., who warns that "because of the lake there are tons of mosquitos, plan accordingly!"

Hiking trails: South Sandusky Campground connects to paved bike trails throughout the Rend Lake area. A camper named Gina explains, "If you camp for the hiking though this isn't my favorite site. There are lots of bike trails but for just hiking there are much better places."

Boating access: South Marcum Campground provides boat ramps for lake access. According to Kelly B., "Great camping, usual campground with clean facility's. My family & i enjoy the lake for fishing, boating, swimming & beach time! Close to town for the forgotten marshmallows!"

What campers like

Cell service limitations: The disconnected nature of camping near Johnsonville can be a welcome break. At Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area, one camper shares, "This is where we have camped the most. There is very little cell service so it is a great place to be unplugged and enjoy time with friends and family!"

Spacious sites: Illini Campground at Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area gets high marks for site size. One reviewer notes, "Absolutely huge site with old growth trees throughout the campground without lots of space between."

Beach access: Coles Creek Recreation Area provides dedicated beach facilities. "This wonderful camping area is beautiful with clean campsites. With picnic areas and a beach close you and the family will have a good time and make new friends," writes Jake L.

Glamping in Southern Illinois: While traditional camping dominates, glamping in Johnsonville, Illinois area has expanded beyond just canvas structures. Several campgrounds now offer glamping options including Harmonie State Park Campground where premium overnight accommodations provide more comfort than standard tent sites.

What you should know

Weather preparation: Southern Illinois experiences variable weather patterns. At Gun Creek, a camper recommends, "Nice, large, well thought out campground. Lots of trees, paved sites, bathrooms, showers, and well maintained. Offers full hookups, partial or none."

Wildlife encounters: Local campsites frequently host wildlife visitors. At South Marcum, one camper mentions, "Great place, clean. Lots of deer and turkey!"

Seasonal maintenance: Early season camping may encounter water quality issues. At Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area, a camper noted, "Only complaint that I have was the potable water supply. I filled by trailer's tank at the drinking water supply when you enter the campground. It was extremely dirty with a lot of copper colored solids."

Reservation planning: Harmonie State Park Campground in nearby Indiana requires advance booking for popular weekends. "We stayed the weekend before Halloween. We missed reserving the weekend they have the campground trick or treating, which was the weekend before, but this was just as fun. Apparently that weekend has to be reserved the day reservations open for it," advises Nichole M.
