Several state parks and private campgrounds near Johnsonville, Illinois provide furnished cabin rentals with varying amenities. Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area offers cabins with electric hookups and access to shared bathhouses, while Okaw Valley Kampground features two cabin units with clean facilities. Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park Campground and Whittington Woods Campground both provide cabin options with proximity to Rend Lake. Most cabins include basic furnishings such as beds, tables, and electricity, though amenities vary by location. According to Dawn W., who stayed at Okaw Valley, the campground offers "clean restrooms and showers with hot water" and maintains "walking/hiking wooded trails" near their cabins.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location and season. Washington County State Recreation Area provides two cabins with lake views but limited amenities, as one reviewer noted they were "overpriced due to no running water or nearby toilet but more private and great lake views." Pet-friendly cabins can be found at several locations, including Gun Creek and Harmonie State Park Campground. Most state park cabins require reservations well in advance, particularly during summer months when facilities like pools and nature centers are fully operational. Illini Campground at Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area offers cabin options year-round, though Jake L. cautions that "there are times this park cannot be accessed because of flooding."

Most cabins include beds but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Kitchen facilities vary significantly between locations, with some offering only outdoor fire pits with cooking grates while others provide indoor kitchenettes. Camp stores at locations like Eldon Hazlet and Camp Lakewood offer basic provisions including firewood and some food items. For more substantial grocery needs, nearby towns such as Carlyle, Mount Vernon, and Whittington have stores with complete selections. Cabins at state parks typically include picnic tables and fire rings for outdoor cooking and dining, with access to drinking water from central spigots rather than in-cabin plumbing.

      Spring Creek Campground

      Quiet, serene spot

Wonderful private campground surround by woods, an open field and a small pond. There is a small playground, covered patio, bathrooms with showers and plenty of lawn space! Pet friendly and looks very ADA accessible, I had a great time spending one night here with my dog. $15 for tent/primitive camping, $25 for electric!

      Nice clean and convenient

Family owned with a nice little fishing area (no license required catch and release) paddle boats and camp store. A nice pool with a big covered pavilion, clean restrooms and showers with hot water. We had a level pull thru gravel site with a picnic table and small fire ring and didn’t have to unhook for our overnight. Walking/hiking wooded trails 2 cabins available- several seasonal folks. We were there on a Sunday evening and didn’t really see anyone. Little bit of road noise but so convenient! Thanks Barb!

      Washington County State Recreation Area

      Shady Rest campground

Really great campground. Good mix of tents and RVs. Bath house was very well kept and clean. Showers ran cold at first but after a few mins it gets warmer! There were plenty of pit toliets through out the campground and trash cans. My tent site was clean, good flat spot for tent, picnic table and fire pit with attached grill.

The Concession building in the park is closing. No boat rentals, selling everything he has on the shelf.

Caught a few bass and and good amount of hiking. Large trail around the whole lake, smaller trails lead to sites around the different campgrounds.

      Rend Lake Gun Creek Campground

Many lakeside sites, extra long drives for boat trailers, quiet and scenic

Rend Lake is a large COE recreation area with 4 campgrounds, some with full hook ups for $28 a night, two dams, 2 beaches, several boat launches, a marina, golf course and a restaurant.  Not all facilities were open when we visited in March.  Hiking and biking trails and close to town for gas and bait.  Each site has a stone picnic table and fire ring.  Showers, bathrooms and  playgrounds in multiple places and convenient locations.  Some sites do have steep grade, originally booked Bluejay 48 and moved.

      Gun Creek

      So beautiful

There’s not a bad campsite here. There are sites with electric, water, and sewer. Several sites are right on Rend Lake. Most sites have concrete picnic tables and fire rings. The bath houses are really nice, they are individual shower houses that are clean and well lit. The grounds are very well maintained. The park was full while we stayed there, but was really quiet. You can tent camp or use a camper.

Lots of space by a Lake

RV or tent, book online at Recreation.Gov not all spots are level. Electric on most but not all have water. Campfire area and picnic table provided. Bathhouse is clean and park areas are all clean, dump station on site. We will be back and book closer to the lake in a level site.

    Guide to Johnsonville

Cabin accommodations near Johnsonville, Illinois provide varied overnight options across the region's hardwood forests and lakeshores. Johnsonville lies in southern Illinois, approximately 264 feet above sea level within a transitional climate zone that creates distinct seasonal camping experiences. Winter temperatures regularly drop below freezing while summer highs frequently reach into the 90s, affecting cabin availability and amenity access at several locations.

    What to do

Hiking trails access: South Marcum Campground offers well-maintained trails connecting to Rend Lake recreation areas. "There is a nice playground and dog park as well as a pond at the location," notes James N., highlighting additional outdoor activities beyond hiking.

Fishing opportunities: Gun Creek provides direct lake access for anglers. "Great rates and even better campsites. We got there late and had no problems finding a great campsite right next to the lake," reports Jonathan W., emphasizing the ease of finding waterfront sites for fishing.

Swimming options: Visitors to Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area can access both lake swimming and designated swimming areas. "It's a small campground that offers a playground, bathhouse, hiking trails, and a small swimming area. There is easy access walking down to the marina," according to Jake L.

    What campers like

Lakeside views: Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park Campground cabins offer scenic water views. "Sites are well spaced apart," mentions Matthew B., indicating the spacing provides more privacy than many other area campgrounds.

Wooded seclusion: Whittington Woods Campground provides shaded cabin options. "Beautiful campground with mature trees providing lots of shade on the 100F weekend we were there," explains Jan S., noting how the tree coverage helps during hot summer months.

Seasonal activities: Many cabin sites offer special events during peak seasons. "We stayed the weekend before Halloween. We missed reserving the weekend they have the campground trick or treating, which was the weekend before, but this was just as fun," describes Nichole M., referencing the popular fall activities at several parks.

    What you should know

Limited bathhouse access: Many cabin locations have centralized facilities requiring walking. "The showers and bathrooms are centrally located, so they are a bit of a hike. They are clean and not too busy," reports Cody S. about Wayne Fitzgerrell's facilities.

Reservation challenges: Harmonie State Park Campground can be difficult to book during peak seasons. "We missed reserving the weekend they have the campground trick or treating, which was the weekend before... Apparently that weekend has to be reserved the day reservations open for it," explains Nichole M.

Weather disruptions: Some cabin areas face seasonal closures. "There are times this park cannot be accessed because of flooding," warns Jake L., highlighting access limitations that can affect planning.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Multiple cabin locations feature playgrounds near cabin clusters. "This state park is a basic but nice state park facility. The tent sites were basic but fairly level and clean. Most of the sites had fire pits and picnic table," notes Chad K. about Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area.

Pool availability: Okaw Valley Kampground offers swimming options beyond lake access. "The pool is well-maintained and pleasant. The campsite is an old KOA frozen in time. It's clean but dated," Martin-Charles S. explains, noting the facility condition.

Wildlife viewing: Many cabins provide wildlife watching opportunities. "Never been to a CG with such abundant wildlife! Can sit at your spot and watch deer throughout the day," Lucas T. mentions about Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park Campground.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling issues: Many cabin and RV sites require equipment for leveling. "Lots of interstate noise. Many sites are very off level. CHECK carefully," advises Kennon H. about Wayne Fitzgerrell's sites.

Utility placement: Some sites have awkward hookup configurations. "Full hookups but not on the correct side of RV. All gravel sites. Low dust," notes BC— G. about Whittington Woods Campground, emphasizing the need to bring extension cords.

Off-season advantages: Late fall and early spring offer quieter cabin experiences. "We were on electric only. Wish we had known we could have gotten a senior discount. Very nice campground," Karen mentions about Gun Creek, indicating discounts that aren't always advertised.
