    Okaw Valley Kampground

    Nice clean and convenient

Family owned with a nice little fishing area (no license required catch and release) paddle boats and camp store. A nice pool with a big covered pavilion, clean restrooms and showers with hot water. We had a level pull thru gravel site with a picnic table and small fire ring and didn’t have to unhook for our overnight. Walking/hiking wooded trails 2 cabins available- several seasonal folks. We were there on a Sunday evening and didn’t really see anyone. Little bit of road noise but so convenient! Thanks Barb!

It has a pool, swing sets, playground, cabins, ponds with stocked fish, beautiful walking trails, camping, welcome center, baseball field, volleyball, games, horseshoes, paddle boats, miniature golf, and so much more. There is always something to do here and the owners strive to make it a family place by providing many activities on the weekends. The owners have done an amazing job on this campground and have made it one of the best campgrounds around to create that lasting experience with our children before they grow up!!!

    Springfield KOA

    Spacious Green Grounds

Springfield KOA is actually in Rochester, but it is only about 25 mins into Springfield and all the wonderful Lincoln historic sites. The campground is very nice, a lot of amenities for families like pool, little bikes, miniature golf and horseshoes. Shop has laundry, ice and oropane, there's free wifi. Sites have power and water, you have to go to dump station on the way out as there aren't individual sewers. But there is grass, picnic table and fire ring at every site, trees all around.

    Beaver Dam State Park Campground

    Nice campsites

All sites are shaded and mostly level with pull-thru or back-in parking. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring with a grate over it. Each site has electric, however the water spigots are scattered about. The restroom and shower house is very clean.

There is a nice walking trail path that goes around the exterior of the lake. The lake has boat access and some good fishing spots. There is also a restaurant and store on the lake. The breakfast at the restaurant is great! Mosquitoes are bad, remember to bring repellent.

    Sangchris Lake State Park Campground

    5 stars with a caveat

This is a beautiful state park, but hopefully you won’t have the same experience I did with the electric hookup. I stayed here right after the fourth of July and because of the heat over this holiday weekend and a completely full campground, the electricity couldn’t meet the demand and a transformer blew. By the time I arrived the transformer was repaired, however the pedestals in the section I was supposed to stay in had a problem. I was supposed to stay in site 27, but after 3 attempts to get power at 3 different sites, number 24 was the winner and this was a great site! The campground hosts were fantastic in resolving the situation as well.

Site 24 is huge and level with a picnic table and fire ring. Electric but no water at site. The site is totally private on one side because of a lake inlet and there’s a large back area right on the lake. The gravel pad is located right near a large, old bald cypress.

This park has multiple public use areas, 2 campgrounds, boat launches, fishing piers and a beach. I didn’t use the public restrooms because they were closed due to Covid-19. I was able to get internet with Verizon.

This state park felt like it was dropped into the middle of cornfields and made for a fun drive. The sunset views and stars were awesome!

    Coon Creek (IL)

Great Camping Experience, Perfect for Family Vacation

We've been camping at Coon Creek, on a beautiful Lake Shelbyville, for a few years now, the place is perfect for family vacations. And that's exactly what we do. Gather 10-12 of us, reserve a buddy site, so we can all be on one campsite (big enough to fit 5 tents and an RV). If you have a small group and want to get a small site, there are plenty of those. Some even with lake views. The campground is really big, with tons of different sites. Some are closer to each other, but still very private. Nestled in trees. Equipped in fire pits, and lantern posts. Gravel surfaces, with grass around. The site we always get, is situated along the camp road, but once we are set up, it becomes very private. there is no one in a close proximity, just the road traffic. Which is not bad at all. Good overflow parking, perfectly hidden in the trees. Showers and toilets are in great condition, and usually very clean. Well maintained campground. Illinois is pretty boring, and I know this web site is for more remote camping, but all facts considered, if you're looking for a camping getaway, in Chicago area, only about 4 hours drive (south on I-57) - this is a perfect place for you. Lithia Springs Marina offers boat rentals, we usually get a 12 person pontoon boat for few days, to cruise the 26 mile long lake, or chill in one of many, many beautiful coves. Coon Creek is not too far from town of Shelbyville, where you can stock up on camping food, and beverages. Also few quick-bite restaurants in town. There might be some hiking and biking trails, visit the website for more information. You can book on reserveamerica.com.

    Beaver Dam State Park Campground

Good place to rest and shower for the night

Drive by, choose a spot, let the host know. We tent camped. The ground was relatively flat minus some tree stumps. Every site has a fire pit with adjustable grill, picnic tables, ours had a concrete slab for gatherings, 2 vehicle parking bumper to bumper. Outhouse was a short walk from us and was decent (no sink). Water spicket just beyond that. They’re sporadically placed. Our site was in the shade and not far from the road though there were others that were further back. We did some of the trails which were okay. Something to do, a bit of exercise, and it had some cute little bridges and stops to sit or step out onto the water (must be able bodied). It is a pond not a lake, I could see all points of it from one standing position. Also, no beavers, they left a long time ago. The showers were clean. Walmart is about ten minutes away if you need groceries. It’s a good stop if you’re passing through and need to rest, get a little walk in, shower. Definitely wouldn’t recommend for some one out of town or state who wants to plan a vacation here.

Guide to Hillsboro

Cabin camping options near Hillsboro, Illinois span across several state parks and private campgrounds within a 40-mile radius. The region features rolling farmland interspersed with lakes and wooded areas at elevations between 580-650 feet. Summer temperatures typically reach 85-90°F, while spring and fall temperatures range from 45-65°F, making seasonal considerations important for cabin reservations.

What to do

Fishing access from private docks: At Sangchris Lake State Park Campground, cabins are positioned near fishing opportunities. "We always get sites with our own private dock to fish from. Spotty reception but it's great to unplug," notes one visitor who frequents the park.

Miniature golf and paddleboats: Rustic Acres Jellystone offers cabin renters access to their 18-hole putt-putt course. A reviewer mentions, "There was also a swimming pool that looked inviting. I went for a run at sunset down the road it is on and the area couldn't have been more beautiful and quiet."

Hiking trails of varying difficulty: Several cabin locations feature walking paths for different skill levels. At Okaw Valley Kampground, one visitor appreciated "a little walking path for little kid 'hikes'" and mentioned unique side trips: "One day when we were bored we went to Casey the little town of big things and got a kick out of seeing the world's largest rocking chair, wind chime etc."

What campers like

Year-round availability: Some cabin accommodations remain open during winter months. According to a camper at Ramsey Lake State Recreation Area, the park maintains "clean bathhouse. Campground hosts very helpful. Electric only but water available and nice dump station. All sites at Hickory Point very close to lake."

Quiet weekday stays: For those seeking solitude, mid-week bookings provide a different experience. "Site 26. We were basically by ourselves being mid week in November. Great view. Nice camp hosts," reports a visitor to Illini Campground at Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area, noting the contrast with busier summer weekends.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: The forested settings around cabins near Hillsboro support diverse wildlife. At Sangchris Lake, one camper observed: "lots of deer bed down in the grassy areas at night, which was a fun thing to see!" This provides cabin guests with nature viewing opportunities directly from their accommodation.

What you should know

Seasonal bathroom maintenance: Facility cleanliness varies throughout the year. A camper at Beaver Dam State Park Campground noted, "The shower house was nice, with one small shower stall and large ADA shower stall," while also mentioning bathroom cleanliness fluctuations during their stay.

Variable utility connections: Cabin amenities differ significantly between locations. "All sites are shaded and mostly level with pull-thru or back-in parking. Each site has electric, however the water spigots are scattered about," explains one camper about Beaver Dam facilities.

Seasonal campground closures: Operating dates vary by location. Lake Taylorville City Campground operates "April 1 to October 31," while Sangchris Lake maintains longer seasonal access "April 1 to January 16," which affects cabin availability for late fall and winter visitors.

Tips for camping with families

Halloween events: Several campgrounds host special activities during October. One camper at Okaw Valley Kampground highlights amenities for families: "The pool, the lake, the gigantic playground, the pavilion, the laundromat, the location, the cleanliness in the bathhouse, the gardens… the hosts Barb and Gary work their asses off to upkeep this place."

Kid-friendly recreation options: Family cabins benefit from nearby play areas. "This beautiful campground has many things to offer and is only a few minutes from the local drive in movie theater in Litchfield Illinois," mentions a visitor about activities near camping facilities.

On-site amenities for rainy days: Cabin camping provides shelter during inclement weather. As one family noted at Country Bend Campground: "Holiday weekends have so many planned activities, some for all ages. We really loved the bridges with trails to ponds, and the jumping pillow. All of the seasonal site people are super friendly."

Tips from RVers

Winter utility considerations: For cabins with utilities, cold weather requires preparation. A visitor to Okaw Valley Kampground appreciated facilities that had "water (with defroster on the podium), sewer and functional electric," noting these features were crucial during colder months.

Last-minute availability strategies: Travelers seeking cabins without reservations should know arrival timing matters. "We camped here right after the fourth of July and because of the heat over this holiday weekend and a completely full campground, the electricity couldn't meet the demand and a transformer blew," shared one camper, suggesting arriving mid-week increases cabin availability.

Site selection for privacy: Some cabin areas offer more seclusion than others. "We were in site 24 is huge and level with a picnic table and fire ring. Electric but no water at site. The site is totally private on one side because of a lake inlet," noted a visitor describing their ideal cabin location.
