Illini Campground — Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area

    Great family campground

We LOVE Hazlet! We have a popup camper and camp here often. It's a huge campground with a smaller reservable section and an extensive first come, first serve section. There are usually always spaces available. Sites are pretty level, are gravel, wooded, and spacious. There are several 'loops'' of sites that extend out and have water views. The shower houses are clean and air conditioned, there's a nice camp store that serves breakfast and basic lunches, and there is a nice large zero entry pool for a $5 fee on weekends. The campground hosts are sprinkled througout the grounds and are always friendly and accommodating. They have a huge Halloween event every year where people decorate their sites (pretty extensively) and there's a haunted house, then kids trick or treat from site to site. The campground also provides pumpkin painting contests and other fun activities. Better get there at least a week in advance for the halloweeen festivities- it fills up!

    Eagle Creek State Park Campground

    Wooded Solitude / Family Friendly

Review of Drive In Tent Camping Site 2. Showed up on a Thursday night and had our pick of all the drive in and walk in sites. We decided on site 2 in the drive in area. Previous reviews and a book by John Schirle on Tent Camping in Illinois helped us with this decision as well. Decent maintained sites with some older picnic tables and fire rings, but let's be honest this stuff sits outside 24/7. Site 2 seemed to sit back the farthest with site 1 a close second. Both wooded sites that made for great shade and helped some when it was raining. Any two families looking for two sites could certainly set up and share the experience. Nice little cove behind them to try fishing. Just watch the hike down the path or ravine. Dog friendly, fresh water supply (hint put the handle all the way up and wait a few seconds), ability to store stuff in the car close by, outhouse toilets visible at the walk in parking lot, and helpful host for easy check in who even sells fire wood made for a great few days ($5 a bundle). Rated B/S site at a cost of $10 a night.

    Sangchris Lake State Park Campground

    Lakeside Relaxation

These walk in sites check all the boxes.  At the western part of the RV loop, is a peninsula of primitive tent camping spots to choose from.  About half the sites were filled by the second day we were there.  We settled on 62, which is spacious and provides access to the path from the front and behind where you can walk into site 64 as well.  A parking area with a single spot for each camp site is well marked and by two vault toilets.  Park staff and host were great.  A decent fishing spot is just in front of site 64.  $8 for IL residents is hard to beat, if you don't need an RV spot with electric.  A water source is also by the parking spots.  The weekend we were there the weather had cooled some and a great breeze was coming off the lake.  Springfield being so close is a bonus.

The only negative is like any spot and how previous people leave the camp looking before you are there.  Some garbage in the fire pit and random spots are par for the course in any state park.  Pick up the trash and dump it in the dumpster by the parking lot.  Leave the site better than you found it is our motto.

Illini Campground — Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area

    Beautiful lake

We had reservations nearly one month ahead, and the campground was full, yet quiet and restful. Our site only had electric hookup, and there were two pit toilets in the cul de sac, and we never found the showers that were supposedly on site. The acorns were falling, and we nearly jumped out of bed when they struck our roof! No fault of the campground, but a mild annoyance nevertheless. There is a camp store but we didn't visit it. The nearby town of Carlyle has a Walmart and several fast food eateries, but only one independent restaurant, Mexican , which came highly recommended. We met campers that return here often, but it was our first time. We would stay again if in the area.

Guide to Hillsboro

Hillsboro camping areas sit at approximately 600 feet elevation within Montgomery County, Illinois, where open farmland meets wooded lake regions. Summer temperatures typically reach 86-90°F with moderate humidity, while spring and fall camping seasons offer milder 65-75°F days. Most campgrounds in this area remain open from April through October, with several luxury glamping options extending accommodations into November.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Sangchris Lake State Park offers multiple fishing docks right inside the campground. A visitor noted, "All sites at Hickory Point very close to lake. Several fishing docks in campground." The 2,165-acre lake is stocked with largemouth bass, crappie, and channel catfish.

Hiking trails: At Ramsey Lake State Recreation Area, campers can access several wide, maintained trails. One equestrian camper observed, "Trails aren't marked real well but very wide nicely maintained too." The recreation area encompasses 1,980 acres with trails ranging from 0.5 to 3 miles.

Swimming options: Lithia Springs provides a small swimming beach adjacent to camping areas. As one visitor described, "Really nice campground on the shore of Lake Shelbyville. Electric, showers, laundry, playground, nice beach, volleyball and some phenomenal sites right on shore."

Boating access: Several campgrounds feature boat launches for easy water access. At Coles Creek Recreation Area, campers appreciate the convenience of waterside camping. One reviewer mentioned, "It has full hook up, 50 amp sites with many located right on the water!" Boat rentals are available at marinas near several campgrounds.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Okaw Valley Kampground receives consistent praise for maintenance standards. A recent reviewer stated, "The bathroom was the cleanest I have seen at a campsite. The sites are close as it is a small campground. But it was easy as people were respectful of each others spaces and it was quiet." Shower facilities are available year-round.

Weekend activities: Country Bend Campground offers structured entertainment beyond standard amenities. A reviewer explained, "Holiday weekends have so many planned activities, some for all ages. We really loved the bridges with trails to ponds, and the jumping pillow." Activities typically run April through November.

Spacious sites: Several parks provide generous camping spaces. At Illini Campground — Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area, campers appreciate the room to spread out. One visitor commented, "Absolutely huge site with old growth trees throughout the campground without lots of space between."

Seasonal atmosphere: Fall and spring camping near Hillsboro offers distinct experiences. Springfield KOA maintains seasonal decorations and activities. A visitor shared, "This KOA is in a rural area. The signage to get there was very good, plus we had our GPS to help out. This area is QUIET! No trains, no interstate noise."

What you should know

Reservations essential: During peak seasons, campgrounds fill quickly. At Sangchris Lake State Park Campground, availability can be limited. One camper advised, "If you want a lake spot, make a reservation way in advance."

Weather considerations: Spring camping may encounter muddy conditions. A Country Bend Campground visitor cautioned, "The sites are sunk down, poorly rocked and extremely narrow. The majority of sites are backup only, which is a recipe for disaster with all of the rain central Illinois has had this Spring. Be prepared for mud and standing water. 4wd a must."

Water quality varies: Some campgrounds have inconsistent water quality. Campers occasionally report issues with campground water supplies and should plan accordingly.

Noise factors: Some locations experience periodic noise disruptions. At St. Louis NE-Granite City KOA, a reviewer noted, "During modified car racing season, Friday nights are roaring loud from the racetrack nearby." Train noise affects several campgrounds in the region.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area offers multiple play areas. A family camper reported, "There are three playground areas, a basketball court, sand volleyball and a pool during summer months. Lots of families with kids, bike rides and plenty of other lake and outdoor activities in the area."

Swimming facilities: Coles Creek Recreation Area provides dedicated swimming areas for families. A visitor shared, "This is a nice, large campground located on Carlyle Lake in Illinois. There is a beach for campers to use, and a really nice playground."

Activity planning: Many campgrounds organize special events for children. At Country Bend Campground, seasonal activities keep families engaged. A reviewer mentioned, "There is always something to do here and the owners strive to make it a family place by providing many activities on the weekends."

Supply access: Most camping areas have nearby shopping. One Eldon Hazlet camper noted, "Walmart is just 5-10min away if needed as well as restaurants, gas station, and other amenities in Carlyle nearby."

Tips from RVers

Site selection: When glamping close to Hillsboro, Illinois, RV site dimensions matter. A visitor to Country Bend Campground advised, "Our motorhome is a big rig a 42 foot diesel pusher... We were put in a spot by Country Bend Campground not large enough for our vehicle. Not much gravel all mud."

Hookup verification: Always confirm hookup availability before arrival. At some locations, water access points are shared. A reviewer at Springfield KOA explained, "While checking in, the lady told me we couldn't use our sewer. She said the whole row was backing up. Since the dump station was also in this line, we couldn't dump."

Power considerations: Several glamping options near Hillsboro now offer 50-amp service for larger units. At Okaw Valley Kampground, campers find adequate electrical service for extended stays.

Access challenges: Some campground entrances present difficulties for larger rigs. A St. Louis NE-Granite City KOA camper warned, "A little sketchy getting off east bound ramp then having to cross three lanes of traffic to make a left hand turn at the first light. Entrance to campground is tight, swing wide."
