    Nice clean and convenient

Family owned with a nice little fishing area (no license required catch and release) paddle boats and camp store. A nice pool with a big covered pavilion, clean restrooms and showers with hot water. We had a level pull thru gravel site with a picnic table and small fire ring and didn’t have to unhook for our overnight. Walking/hiking wooded trails 2 cabins available- several seasonal folks. We were there on a Sunday evening and didn’t really see anyone. Little bit of road noise but so convenient! Thanks Barb!

    Country Bend Campground

    Great experience!

Big things happening at Country Bend Campgrounds in Montrgromy Co, IL. This beautiful campground has many things to offer and is only a few minutes from the local drive in movie theater in Litchfield Illinois. It has a pool, swing sets, playground, cabins, ponds with stocked fish, beautiful walking trails, camping, welcome center, baseball field, volleyball, games, horseshoes, paddle boats, miniature golf, and so much more. This family run business is under new management and is welcoming new seasonal campers and day campers with competitive pricing. This beautiful campground is nestled in a scenic area in the country and is pet friendly. It has clean shower houses with warm water. We just purchased our seasonal campsite earlier in the season. Come check out this amazing campground and all it has to offer! Our rough collies will be joining us at this dog friendly campground! There is always something to do here and the owners strive to make it a family place by providing many activities on the weekends. The owners have done an amazing job on this campground and have made it one of the best campgrounds around to create that lasting experience with our children before they grow up!!!

    Springfield KOA

    Spacious Green Grounds

Springfield KOA is actually in Rochester, but it is only about 25 mins into Springfield and all the wonderful Lincoln historic sites. The campground is very nice, a lot of amenities for families like pool, little bikes, miniature golf and horseshoes. Shop has laundry, ice and oropane, there's free wifi. Sites have power and water, you have to go to dump station on the way out as there aren't individual sewers. But there is grass, picnic table and fire ring at every site, trees all around.

    Beaver Dam State Park Campground

    Nice campsites

All sites are shaded and mostly level with pull-thru or back-in parking. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring with a grate over it. Each site has electric, however the water spigots are scattered about. The restroom and shower house is very clean.

There is a nice walking trail path that goes around the exterior of the lake. The lake has boat access and some good fishing spots. There is also a restaurant and store on the lake. The breakfast at the restaurant is great! Mosquitoes are bad, remember to bring repellent.

    Sangchris Lake State Park Campground

    5 stars with a caveat

This is a beautiful state park, but hopefully you won’t have the same experience I did with the electric hookup. I stayed here right after the fourth of July and because of the heat over this holiday weekend and a completely full campground, the electricity couldn’t meet the demand and a transformer blew. By the time I arrived the transformer was repaired, however the pedestals in the section I was supposed to stay in had a problem. I was supposed to stay in site 27, but after 3 attempts to get power at 3 different sites, number 24 was the winner and this was a great site! The campground hosts were fantastic in resolving the situation as well.

Site 24 is huge and level with a picnic table and fire ring. Electric but no water at site. The site is totally private on one side because of a lake inlet and there’s a large back area right on the lake. The gravel pad is located right near a large, old bald cypress.

This park has multiple public use areas, 2 campgrounds, boat launches, fishing piers and a beach. I didn’t use the public restrooms because they were closed due to Covid-19. I was able to get internet with Verizon.

This state park felt like it was dropped into the middle of cornfields and made for a fun drive. The sunset views and stars were awesome!

    Coon Creek (IL)

Great Camping Experience, Perfect for Family Vacation

We've been camping at Coon Creek, on a beautiful Lake Shelbyville, for a few years now, the place is perfect for family vacations. And that's exactly what we do. Gather 10-12 of us, reserve a buddy site, so we can all be on one campsite (big enough to fit 5 tents and an RV). If you have a small group and want to get a small site, there are plenty of those. Some even with lake views. The campground is really big, with tons of different sites. Some are closer to each other, but still very private. Nestled in trees. Equipped in fire pits, and lantern posts. Gravel surfaces, with grass around. The site we always get, is situated along the camp road, but once we are set up, it becomes very private. there is no one in a close proximity, just the road traffic. Which is not bad at all. Good overflow parking, perfectly hidden in the trees. Showers and toilets are in great condition, and usually very clean. Well maintained campground. Illinois is pretty boring, and I know this web site is for more remote camping, but all facts considered, if you're looking for a camping getaway, in Chicago area, only about 4 hours drive (south on I-57) - this is a perfect place for you. Lithia Springs Marina offers boat rentals, we usually get a 12 person pontoon boat for few days, to cruise the 26 mile long lake, or chill in one of many, many beautiful coves. Coon Creek is not too far from town of Shelbyville, where you can stock up on camping food, and beverages. Also few quick-bite restaurants in town. There might be some hiking and biking trails, visit the website for more information. You can book on reserveamerica.com.

    Beaver Dam State Park Campground

Good place to rest and shower for the night

Drive by, choose a spot, let the host know. We tent camped. The ground was relatively flat minus some tree stumps. Every site has a fire pit with adjustable grill, picnic tables, ours had a concrete slab for gatherings, 2 vehicle parking bumper to bumper. Outhouse was a short walk from us and was decent (no sink). Water spicket just beyond that. They’re sporadically placed. Our site was in the shade and not far from the road though there were others that were further back. We did some of the trails which were okay. Something to do, a bit of exercise, and it had some cute little bridges and stops to sit or step out onto the water (must be able bodied). It is a pond not a lake, I could see all points of it from one standing position. Also, no beavers, they left a long time ago. The showers were clean. Walmart is about ten minutes away if you need groceries. It’s a good stop if you’re passing through and need to rest, get a little walk in, shower. Definitely wouldn’t recommend for some one out of town or state who wants to plan a vacation here.

Guide to Butler

Cabin camping near Butler, Illinois offers overnight accommodation options within convenient driving distance of popular state parks and recreational areas. Most cabin properties provide electricity, while amenities like bathroom facilities, kitchenettes and fishing access vary between locations. The area experiences seasonal weather patterns with humid summers and moderate winter conditions, requiring different preparation depending on time of year.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Sangchris Lake State Park Campground provides excellent shoreline fishing access with multiple fishing docks directly in the campground area. "I have been coming here for years with my family when I was younger. I took a trip alone with my tent for 4 days in May. The place is as pristine as it was when I was a kid- perfect bathhouse, beautiful lakeshore, and cozy tent camping. Plenty of wildlife to observe and wonderful fishing to be had," notes one visitor to Sangchris Lake State Park Campground.

Hiking trails: At Beaver Dam State Park Campground, visitors can explore walking paths that circle the lake. "The trail goes all the way around the lake with several fishing spots. Theres a boat ramp near the parking area and several docks to use across the lake," explains a reviewer. The park features short nature trails suitable for casual walks rather than extended hiking.

Water recreation: Beyond fishing, some properties offer additional water activities. "Big things happening at Country Bend Campgrounds in Montrgromy Co, IL. This beautiful campground has many things to offer... It has a pool, swing sets, playground, cabins, ponds with stocked fish, beautiful walking trails, camping, welcome center, baseball field, volleyball, games, horseshoes, paddle boats, miniature golf, and so much more," describes a visitor to Country Bend Campground.

What campers like

Cabin comfort: Ramsey Lake State Recreation Area provides cabin rentals that visitors rate highly for their value. "The park is reasonable priced, beautiful surrounding and friendly staff. Would definitely come again. The only downside is that it's somewhat far from supply stores," writes one visitor about the cabin experience.

Peaceful environment: Campers consistently mention the quiet atmosphere at many properties. A guest at Rustic Acres Jellystone noted, "We chose this campground because it was near our route and we needed a place to stay for one night. The campsites were adequately spaced, there were plenty of mature trees for shade, a large pond for fishing... the area couldn't have been more beautiful and quiet. The campground is surrounded by cornfields and the air felt clean and fresh."

Family-friendly activities: Beyond standard cabin amenities, many locations offer recreational facilities. "This is a really great campground! Huge campground with a lot of different areas. Be prepared for a lot of walking unless you rent or bring your own golf cart. Holiday weekends have so many planned activities, some for all ages. We really loved the bridges with trails to ponds, and the jumping pillow," explains a visitor to Country Bend Campground.

What you should know

Seasonal availability: Some properties operate on limited schedules. Sangchris Lake State Park Campground specifically operates from April 1 through January 16, limiting winter camping options. The area experiences typical Midwestern seasonal variations with hot summers and cold winters.

Bathroom quality varies: Facility conditions differ significantly between locations. One Beaver Dam visitor reported, "Primitive tent camping area is very spacious but bathrooms were dirty and gross. The women's bathroom near T3 didn't have toilet paper the entire three days we stayed there. I drove to other restrooms while we stayed there."

Site conditions: Prepare for potential seasonal challenges at cabin sites. A visitor to Okaw Valley Kampground noted, "The camp host was very friendly and helpful. The camp store was well stocked. We had a pull through just for overnight, and it was perfect. The park appeared well taken care of, and the pool looked clean."

Tips for camping with families

Recreation options: Choose cabins near swimming facilities during summer months. "We LOVE Hazlet! We have a popup camper and camp here often... The shower houses are clean and air conditioned, there's a nice camp store that serves breakfast and basic lunches, and there is a nice large zero entry pool for a $5 fee on weekends," explains a visitor to Illini Campground — Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area.

Playground access: Several properties offer play areas for children. "This campground has an interesting set up. The sites in the loops are gravel and you have room but not a lot of privacy. There were three playground areas, a basketball court, sand volleyball and a pool during summer months," notes a visitor about Beaver Dam State Park.

Grocery proximity: Plan for supply runs as needed. Beaver Dam State Park Campground is just ten minutes from a Walmart in Carlinville for grocery needs, making it convenient for families needing to restock during stays.

Tips from RVers

Site sizing: Consider vehicle dimensions when booking cabin sites. "We chose a site on gravel as met our needs and was less expensive, but most of the sites are grassy and under the trees," explains a visitor to Rustic Acres Jellystone, noting the different site options available.

Park accessibility: Access roads can present challenges for larger vehicles. A visitor to Springfield KOA noted, "Lots of wonderful signs directing you to the campground once you exit the interstate. Secluded. Quite. Not crowded, even when it's full. The roads leading to the campground are narrow, luckily we didn't encounter someone coming the other way!"

Utility connections: Electric hookups vary by location. A visitor to Lake Taylorville City Campground reports the facilities are "not anything fancy but it has the basics," which matters for campers planning to use appliances or devices requiring reliable electricity.
