Summer temperatures typically range from 70-85°F, while spring and fall can bring significant temperature fluctuations and occasional thunderstorms.
What to do
Hiking extensive trail networks: Camp Bullfrog Lake offers miles of mountain bike and hiking trails directly accessible from campsites. "What's great about this location is the access to the miles and miles of MTB and hiking trails just out the front step of your campsite," notes Josh M. who appreciates midweek camping trips to break up the work routine.
Beach activities on Lake Michigan: Indiana Dunes State Park provides beach access close to campsites with swimming opportunities. "The campsite is your usual state park site. Potable water, toilets and showers available in the off season. Pretty crowded even when it's chilly out. Great hiking, pretty hilly if your from anywhere in the Midwest," shares Ashley A.
Rock climbing for beginners: Camp Sullivan features an activities barn with a rock climbing wall ideal for first-time climbers. "There are smaller family cabins with heat available to rent as well as large bunkhouses for organized groups," reports Shane S., highlighting the activities available beyond traditional camping.
What campers like
Lakeside camping with scenic views: Camp Bullfrog Lake offers waterfront sites that create memorable experiences. "This campground was easy peasy and had an incredible view of the lake. We were right there on the lake. We went in September so I'm not sure how it would be in the summer since there is little to no cover," explains Jenna M.
Accessibility to Chicago: The proximity to the city while feeling removed from urban life appeals to many campers visiting sites near Bedford Park. "Great site, not far from Chicago, but feels well away from city life. Tent sites around rim of a lake. RV sites and cabins as well," writes Andrew S. about his experience.
Clean facilities: Blackwell Family Campground maintains well-kept grounds and bathrooms. "They have discounted rates for Dupage county residents and have electric at all sites and great prices for firewood. Sites are level and clean and they have modern bathrooms," according to Marc W. who appreciates the value and cleanliness.
What you should know
Limited shade at newer campgrounds: Some sites lack mature trees. "We've camped here a few times and it is always a great experience. Each site comes with a free bundle of oak firewood which is nice to use on the fire pits," notes Josh M., though Tim K. points out "There is NO shade during the day. None at all due to the trees within the campground being small."
Weekend crowding: Most campgrounds fill quickly Friday through Sunday. "Weekend blows up with people but is manageable. Great place to ride bikes; they had a swim beach but we did not take advantage of it," shares Bran P.
Gate closures after hours: Camp Reinberg implements security measures that affect late arrivals. "There is a gate that is closed at 10pm every night and opened again in the morning. The campground is centrally located to the major roads (Quentin/NW Hwy) and about 10 minutes from the Palatine Metra train station," explains Susan L.
