Camping near Lenore, Idaho centers around Dworshak Reservoir, a 53-mile long body of water formed by the highest straight-axis concrete dam in the Western Hemisphere. Summer temperatures typically reach 90°F, while spring and fall bring cooler conditions with overnight lows dropping into the 40s. Most primitive campsites in this area don't require reservations, operating on a first-come, first-served basis.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: At McKay's Bend Recreation Site, anglers enjoy convenient river access. "There's a dirt road that leads down to the river, which is scenic. But there's no particularly good spots to hang out on the river. Everything seems to cater to fishermen that frequent the area," notes Julian P.
Kayaking and paddleboarding: Winchester Lake offers calm waters perfect for non-motorized vessels. "The lake is perfect for kayaking and fishing. Only 45 minutes from Lewiston, ID, Winchester Lake State Park is becoming one of our favorites!" says Brock W. from Winchester Lake State Park Campground.
Hiking trails: Explore the Big Eddy trail system near Dworshak Reservoir. "The first half mile is difficult but then the trail levels out and is easy for many miles. There's free dispersed camping sites starting after 4.5 miles down the trail," reports Megan K.
What campers like
Secluded locations: Canyon Creek provides privacy away from more developed campgrounds. "Very quiet, overlooking the lake. Clean vault toilets. Boat ramp. 4 miles of rough gravel road with tight turns," writes Mitch C.
Affordable hookups: Budget-conscious campers appreciate McKay's Bend's value. "At 18 dollars I was skeptical before l arrived. Getting everything for 9 dollars is unbelievable but true," says Sadie P. who also notes, "Check the pics for accepted passes that drop the prices by 1/2."
Wildlife viewing: Areas around Canyon Creek offer chances to spot native animals. "Took about an hour to get to our campsite, but was so worth it. Was a creek at the top of a mountain in the middle, I guess hence the name. Local had wondered how we found his special fishing spot," shares Samantha A.
What you should know
Road conditions: Many campgrounds require careful navigation. "4 miles of rough gravel road with tight turns," reports Mitch C. about accessing Canyon Creek. Similarly at Dent Acres, "Pretty steep grades in and out of the area, but just take it easy on downhill and use your gears," advises Craig S.
Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies significantly between campgrounds. "Beautiful secluded location. Very clean bathroom. I could make and receive phone calls but no internet service with Verizon," notes Kristi D. about Canyon Creek.
Seasonal water levels: Dworshak Reservoir experiences significant level changes. "The lake/reservoir is down more than 25 feet which makes launching a challenge! There is zero beach for swimming!" warns Marian J. about Dent Acres.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Three Meadows Group Camp offers family-friendly facilities. "Cool little guided nature trail for an evening walk with our little one to learn about animal tracks," shares Greg G.
Swimming options: Winchester Lake State Park provides water recreation for children. "This isn't a great lake for swimming, as it's loaded with thick algae. It is great for boating a small boat or getting lost in the thick pines around it," advises Nicholas G.
Educational opportunities: Combine camping with learning about local ecosystems. "Take a moment to check out the lake by Big Eddie as it has pristine blue waters and a lot of recreational sites for BBQs and just getting some R&R," suggests Megan K.
Tips from RVers
Hookup availability: Pink House Recreation Site offers essential services for RVs. "Excellent campground with full hookups at a good price, $18/day, $4/day for extra car. Half price for Golden Age passport, Access Passport, Interagency Senior pass etc.," explains Douglas M.
Site leveling challenges: Winchester Lake State Park requires preparation for uneven terrain. "Clean campground and decent space between neighbors. No sewer hookups. Would visit again. Lake was low and lots of geese so messes everywhere," reports Douglas B.
Seasonal accessibility: Most campgrounds have varying access depending on weather conditions. "Great area. About 20 miles from US-12. Showers and other amenities available on site for a fee. Full bathrooms. No phone service. Dirt access road," writes Derreck B. about Dent Acres.
