What to do
Hiking trails: At Stone Mountain Park Campground, accessible trails surround the campground with views of the mountain and lake. "We loved these grounds. They were clean and there was easy access to bathrooms. The hike to the top was a challenge, but the views were worth it," notes visitor Judy B.

"Great swimming and hiking," mentions Barbara C., while Nancy W. adds, "Fort Yargo State Park has lots to do. Seasonal events: Amicalola Falls State Park hosts ranger-led programs throughout the year including wildlife talks and guided hikes. "We had a blast. Perfect time of year and a great way to start our 24 hour adventure challenge!" shares DirtbagKyle G.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: Many cabins at Don Carter State Park Campground offer secluded settings with adequate spacing. "Site 7 is separate from the others and has the whole point except there is a trail behind the site," notes Christine.
Clean facilities: Cabin accommodations at Margaritaville feature well-maintained bathroom facilities. "The campsite was perfect and clean. The resort was immaculate," reports Brandi T., while another visitor adds, "This place is beautiful! Well maintained, and had plenty to do for everyone."
Lake views: Many cabins offer direct water access. "Our site was on the lake. My husband and son enjoyed fishing and paddle boarding right behind our site," explains a Red Top Mountain visitor, while another adds, "We camped with my parents in the RV section of the campground, it was beautifully wooded and offered plenty of space/privacy from other campsites and was still a short walk from the bathhouse. Also had a little view of a lake down below."
Convenient location: Tiny Cabin provides proximity to Atlanta while maintaining a rural setting. "Hosts were amazing and accommodating. We stayed for 2 nights for a soccer tournament and it was the perfect location," shares Tamra J.
What you should know
Reservation requirements: Most cabin facilities require advance booking, especially during summer and holiday weekends. Don Carter State Park can be booked up to 13 months in advance through the Georgia State Parks reservation system.
Noise considerations: Some campgrounds experience noise from nearby transportation. "This park is about 30-40 minutes outside of Atlanta right off of I-75. If you are in a tent... you will hear I-75 traffic all night," notes Jeff E. about Red Top Mountain.
Cabin amenities vary: Stone Mountain Park Campground offers cabins with varied amenities. "The campground offers everything you would ever need. There are tons of things to do from Golf, hiking, zoo, laser show, food and you can hike the mountain or take a ride to the top," explains Holly B.
Site accessibility: Cabin locations may require navigation of steep terrain. "Heavily wooded sites that are not well maintained. Very narrow roads in the campground with lots of pot holes. Not the easiest state park to pull a travel trailer in," warns Brock D. about one park's conditions.
Tips for camping with families
Playgrounds and activities: Margaritaville offers extensive family entertainment options beyond cabin accommodations. Fanny D. explains, "We stayed here for two nights on our way from Virginia to Florida. It is a very nice family friendly vacation resort rather than overnight stay. But we enjoyed all the amenities."
Educational programs: Amicalola Falls State Park Camping provides nature programs suitable for children. "Friendly staff, with the Jr ranger program still going with the help of adult campers during covid. Still so much fun and so clean and beautiful!!" shares Cheryl C.
Beach access: Don Carter State Park features sandy beaches suitable for young children. Cameron G. reports, "We love that it's on the lake because family members have boats and its just easy to jump on at the campsite dock. There is also a beach for the kids to play at as well, very well kept."
Cabin size considerations: "Our campsite was a tad bit small for our camper, large campers like motorhomes or fifth-wheels will not fit," notes a Don Carter visitor, highlighting the importance of checking cabin and site dimensions when traveling with families requiring larger accommodations.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling: Stone Mountain Park provides relatively level sites for RVs with cabin options nearby. "We spent a weekend here in section O. It was a nice, spacious campsite with a nice picnic table and partial view of the lake even though we didn't have 'lake view' site," says Tonya B.
Hookup options: Fort Yargo State Park offers limited full hookup sites but provides convenient gray water dumps. "Great campground, near shopping and restaurants. Great hiking trail around the lake. No FHU, but they do have grey water dumps in numerous places in campground," shares Judi P.
Road conditions: Some parks have challenging access roads. "The roads are a little hilly and twisting but if you have a big rig and go slow you will be fine. All the campsite driveways are angled so backing in is pretty easy," advises Nancy W. about Fort Yargo State Park.
Winter availability: Cabin options remain accessible during winter months when RV camping may be challenging. "Navy is a small park with rolling hills, wooded sites and lots of shade. We've stayed at site 11 and 12, both accommodated our 28 ft camper well," reports Linda S. about nearby Naval Recreation areas.
