Description

Rabun County, GA

Rabun County

One of the most spectacular canyons in the eastern United States, Tallulah Gorge is two miles long and nearly 1,000 feet deep. Visitors can hike rim trails to several overlooks or obtain a permit to hike to the gorge floor (100 permits per day, not available during water releases). 200-foot-long suspension bridge sways 80 feet above the rocky bottom, providing spectacular views of the river and waterfalls. Tightrope walkers have twice crossed the gorge and visitors can still see towers used by tightrope walker Karl Wallenda. A paved path follows a 1-1/2-mile former railroad bed, perfect for strollers and bicycles, while mountain bikers can test their skills on a challenging 10-mile trail.
Exhibits in the park's Jane Hurt Yarn Interpretive Center highlight the rich history of this Victorian resort town, the rugged terrain and fragile ecosystem of the area. The persistent trillium, monkey-face orchid and green salamander are protected species found within the gorge. An award-winning film takes viewers on a dramatic journey through the gorge, including footage of rock climbers and kayakers. A gift shop offers snacks, jewelry, toys, books, walking sticks, clothing and more.

Nice campground but needs a few things

First,  the positives:

1.  This is a small campground, which we like

2.  As we were there in early May, it was not crowded. In fact, after Sunday morning when everyone from the weekend left it was only about 1/3 full

3.  Ice is available on site for $2 per bag and firewood is available for $5 per bag

4.  The entire campground is very wooded, so it is very shady and cool

5.  There is a trail leading directly from the campground to the gorge and state park,  which is very convenient.

The negatives:

1.  You are never out of earshot of traffic in the campground. The traffic noise does die down at night, but you can hear semi truck engine brakes at all hours. We did not find the noise bothersome though.

2.  While the comfort station near the entrance to the campground was clean and well stocked, there was no place to put your belongings while taking a shower (no benches in the outer cubicle and only one hook, and no place to put shampoo, conditioner or soap in the shower).

Overall this is a very nice campground, and we would definitely stay there again.

Choose your spot wisely

Great access to the Tallulah Gorge! It was really nice to be able to explore the gorge directly from the campsite and the views were incredible. The campground itself is fine, most of the spots offer little privacy. We had spot 4 which was actually pretty private, especially since we lucked out and didn’t have neighbors the first night. As others have said, spot 12 is definitely the best. The wood purchased on site for $5/bundle was wet and hard to burn. We should have bought some in Clayton instead. Ice is available for $2.
