Kayaking, fishing, and swimming on Lake Lanier draw most visitors to Don Carter State Park Campground, situated at the far north end of the lake in Gainesville, Georgia. The campground has two boat launches, a sandy swim beach with outdoor showers, and roughly 12.5 miles of multi-use trails that connect directly from the campsites. Deer are commonly spotted grazing in the primitive camping zones around dusk, and owls are audible at night from the wooded tent sites.
The campground splits into two distinct areas: paved RV sites with full hookups (30/50 amp electric, water, and sewer) and primitive tent and hammock sites set among the trees. The RV loop features back-in and pull-through sites long enough for large rigs, though several sites are not level and some pull-throughs crest in the middle, so it's worth checking the park's online site photos before booking. Site 7 has partial lake views and some shade; site 13 includes both a wooded backdrop and lake sightlines. The primitive lake-view loop is spread out and well-suited to hammock camping, with sites 11 and 12 noted for their views of the water.
The park opened in 2013, and the facilities still read as relatively new. Bathhouses are consistently described as clean and well-maintained, and the paved RV pads are a practical advantage in wet weather. Cell service on Verizon works well, and the park also provides cable television hookups. Kayak rentals are available at the beach, but rental hours are limited, so calling ahead is worth doing. Meredith P. notes you can "hike all the park's trails from the primitive sites," and the park provides wheelbarrows at the primitive lot to help haul gear.
A large picnic pavilion sits between sites 21 and 34 in the RV area, which can affect ambient noise if a group event is scheduled nearby. Some roads in the RV loop have an unusual layout, and tight turns require slow maneuvering in longer rigs. Nancy W. advises to "follow the white lines to navigate" to avoid confusing pull-through sites for roads. Weekday visits tend to mean lighter crowds. The town of Helen, Georgia, with its Bavarian-themed downtown, is a short drive away for those wanting a day trip. Campers looking at other options on the lake can find Laurel Park to the southwest, and Timberline Glamping at Lula is a few miles southeast for a different style of stay.
Reservations are available online, and the park posts photos of individual sites, which makes it easier to choose before arrival. Fall and spring visits avoid the heat that affects open, sun-exposed sites in summer.
