Steep switchback roads wind down to this Army Corps of Engineers campground on a peninsula jutting into Carters Lake. The challenging access requires careful navigation, but rewards visitors with sites positioned along ridgelines and draws overlooking the water below.
Most campsites feature concrete pads with separate paved parking areas, accommodating RVs up to 25 feet and larger rigs that can handle the steep grades. Sites spread across varying elevations, with many offering partial lake views through the tree canopy. Several reviewers highlight the spacing between sites, noting that the topography creates natural separation despite the campground's compact footprint. Niharika S. observes that "people adhered to the quiet hours" during her stay.
The boat ramp provides direct access to Carters Lake for fishing and paddling, with some campers able to walk short trails from their sites down to the water's edge. Site 11 offers a particularly steep but manageable trail to the lake, while site 25 provides seclusion for those preferring fewer neighbors. Each site includes a fire ring, charcoal grill, and picnic table, though no firewood is sold on-site.
Clean bathhouses with hot showers serve the campground, though their locations require either a short drive or five-minute walk from most sites. Cell service varies by carrier, with AT&T providing 2-3 bars and Verizon offering 1-2 bars. The nearest supplies are 25 minutes away, making advance preparation essential. Sites with water and electric hookups run $24-28 per night, with reservations available through the Corps system.
This campground suits RV campers comfortable with steep mountain roads and those seeking lake access for boating activities. For additional camping options in the region, see places to camp near Carters Recreation Area.
