Plantation, Florida sits in Broward County surrounded by the Greater Everglades Ecosystem at 7 feet above sea level. The subtropical climate creates camping conditions that stay warm year-round, with winter temperatures rarely dropping below 60°F. Campers visiting the area can expect high humidity in summer months when mosquito protection becomes essential at most natural sites.
What to do
Water recreation access: Paradise Island RV Resort offers convenient water access near Fort Lauderdale. "Campground in the city, great guest services, friendly staff. Near grocery store, and everything! Full hookup sites, spots are big and concrete roads," shares Milagros B.
Mountain biking: Oleta River State Park Campground features 15 miles of bike trails across 1,000 acres. "Hard to believe that this oasis is so close to major urban centers, but it's true. It boasts 15-miles of trails in more than 1,000 acres! You can bike, snorkel, paddle, run, picnic, rent cabins, primitive camp, and even get married," explains L O.
Wildlife viewing: West Palm Beach-Lion Country Safari KOA combines camping with safari experiences. "We are used to hearing birds and frogs when we camp, but here it is lions...and other noises I was not able to identify," reports Jeffrey W. The campground offers discounted tickets to the adjacent safari park.
What campers like
Urban proximity: Campers appreciate locations that balance natural settings with city convenience. "This is an older campground with a lot of full-time RVers. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and will do whatever they can to make you satisfied. This is a campground in the middle of the city, so don't expect a lot of quiet, as this is how it is in a city," explains Richard H. from Paradise Island RV Resort.
Affordable base camps: Southern Comfort RV Resort serves as an economical starting point for regional exploration. "Not many frills, certainly not a resort and bathroom frequently ran out of TP, but as a relatively affordable base of vacation operations it was good. Close to the Keys, Everglades, Biscayne and shopping," notes Rob K.
Natural spaces in urban settings: Several campgrounds provide unexpected natural retreats. "This is city owned and operated Park/Campground. This fact is significant. It is very pretty with lots of mature shade trees. The RV's are assigned space around several pods. Each pod has its own bathhouse with laundry facilities," describes Tod H. about Larry & Penny Thompson Park.
What you should know
Seasonal considerations: Winter brings the highest visitor numbers to South Florida campgrounds. "We spent 14 months here sheltering from Covid, and it was extremely convenient to all of the Fort Lauderdale area. We never had a single issue during our stay," reports Richard H. about staying long-term at Paradise Island RV Resort.
Insect protection: Mosquitoes can be problematic, especially during warmer months. "When we were pulling in we noticed a train of 7-8 RV's and trailers leaving. Didn't think much of it. Went ahead and checked in, got to our camping site, etc. That's when we noticed that it was literally swarming with mosquitos," warns Daniel G. about a summer experience at West Palm Beach-Lion Country Safari KOA.
