Myakka River State Park primitive campsites require preparation for Florida's subtropical conditions. Located 12 miles east of Interstate 75, these backcountry sites range from 2 to 14 miles from trailheads and have minimal amenities. Campers should bring sufficient water supplies rather than relying on pump stations. The park's extensive trail system and diverse ecosystems make it popular for wildlife viewing, hiking, and paddling activities throughout its 38,000 acres.
What to do
Fossil hunting on Peace River: Accessible through Peace River Campground, this activity draws many visitors seeking prehistoric shark teeth. "This park seems to flood and have limited sewer sites but is a great place to find Shark teeth and other fossils. I once had to abandon my Tilapia as the alligator appeared to want it more than me!" shares a camper from Peace River Campground.
Kayaking through barrier islands: Reach Cayo Costa State Park Campground by water for a true island adventure. "Take the time to plan your paddle around, between and through the barrier islands to Cayo Costa. There is some big water, that might put your panties in a bunch if you aren't use to it. With all the skirting, figure about 5 water miles...give or take," advises a seasoned paddler.
Hiking historic trails: Koreshan State Park offers unique historical walks with educational opportunities. "Magic and historic place. Clean Bathrooms. Big spots and the staff is very friendly. You can do kayaking, biking and hiking with kids," notes a visitor, highlighting the park's diverse trail system that winds through exotic vegetation planted by early settlers.
What campers like
Private riverside sites: Camp Venice Retreat offers direct water access from your campsite. "This is the first trip out in the new camper. It's a small drive from where I live. The campsite is clean and lots of trees and a beautiful river to explore. You can launch you kayak or canoe right from your spot," explains a camper who appreciates the convenience.
Stargazing opportunities: Myakka River State Park provides exceptional dark skies for astronomy enthusiasts. "They have great primitive sites, with hikes that vary from 2 miles to 14 miles to camp sites. Beware of heat, bring plenty of water. Dont depend on water pumps," advises a visitor who experienced the backcountry camping options.
Affordable island access: For yurt camping near North Port, Florida, consider Periwinkle Park. "Sanibel Island is a great vacation spot full of vacation homes, white sand beaches, and world-class shell hunting. This is the only campsite available on the entire island, and as a result it is a bit pricier than most camp sites, but it is far and away the most economical way to see the island," shares a budget-conscious traveler.
What you should know
Weather preparedness: Florida's tropical climate demands planning. "Cayo Costa in January is not like Cayo Costa in July. This may seem obvious but do not underestimate bugs, particularly noseeums on this island," warns a visitor to Cayo Costa State Park.
Wildlife caution: Alligators are common in the region's waterways. "Went to drain the tanks yesterday morning and a large sounding gator started to growl territorially at me. So heads up with your pets please," reports a camper at Myakka River State Park, highlighting the need for vigilance.
Booking strategy: Reserve early for premium spots. "Cayo Costa can book out as much as 6 months in advance. Plan your trip accordingly," advises a repeat visitor, which applies to most state parks and yurt camping options near North Port, Florida.
Tips for camping with families
Bird watching experiences: Periwinkle Park offers a unique aviary experience. "Have camped here twice this year. Bring your bike as beach is half mile away. This is a bird watcher paradise. Lots of parrots as well as native birds. Love all the squawking when they wake up in morning!" shares an enthusiastic visitor.
Swimming options: Consider campgrounds with pools for hot days. "The staff was super helpful and very eager to make sure we had a great stay! The grounds are simply amazing! While on a zoom call from a picnic bench by the River a participant said 'Looks like you guys are in Hawaii or paradise somewhere'," notes a Peace River visitor.
Educational activities: Koreshan State Historic Site provides learning opportunities through its preserved buildings. "This great Park has full and partial hook ups for all styles of camping to include hammock camping. There are 6 primitive campgrounds; group camping and Cabins too! You will have 39 miles of hiking trails and off road/mountain biking at your pleasure."
Tips from RVers
Site selection strategy: At Camp Venice Retreat, choose riverfront spots when available. "Can't say enough great things about Camp Venice Retreat. This place has a very comfy relaxed vibe to it. You pull in and instantly feel like you are among long time friends. Most of the sites are well sized with some pull through and many back ins. The sites along the river are super nice and should be on everyone's list to try to snag."
Access considerations: Some campgrounds have challenging entry roads. "Just a couple of minor issues are the road going in has some potholes and lots of low hanging tree branches. Drive slow and stay in the middle if you can. The park roads are all dirt and can be dusty at times, but again, not a big issue."
Hookup availability: At Peace River RV Resort, understanding the system helps secure better sites. "Not all hookups are full. Must enter lottery to get full hookup site. Wasted 3 hours pulling into one spot. Have to sign up, enter lottery, look at spot, go back hope your name is called, if it is move again."
