Florida's horse campgrounds near Kissimmee offer equestrians varying terrain from pine flatwoods to oak hammocks with elevations rarely exceeding 100 feet above sea level. The region's subtropical climate provides year-round riding opportunities, though summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F with high humidity. Most equestrian campgrounds require advance reservations and many implement fire restrictions during dry winter months when precipitation drops below two inches monthly.
What to do
Trail riding at Lake Kissimmee State Park: The park features over 13 miles of equestrian trails through pine flatwoods and oak hammocks. "We took our two grandchildren, and they had a lot of fun! It was fantastic! We had the handicapped site, plenty of room, wonderful neighbors," notes Lauren W., who appreciates the park's accessibility features.
Attend weekend rodeos: Westgate River Ranch Resort hosts professional rodeos every Saturday night. "The rodeo that was held on the weekend was great. The boys loved it. They even got to participate in chasing the calf to win a prize," shares Christy C., highlighting the interactive nature of these events.
Nature photography: Bill Frederick Park provides diverse wildlife viewing opportunities along Turkey Lake. "This park is beautiful, quiet, alive with wild life, we saw deers, owls, turtles, rabbits & a mama wild boar with her piglets," reports Barbara A. from nearby Colt Creek State Park, which offers similar photography opportunities.
Kayaking and canoeing: Many parks offer water access for paddling. "We were easily able to roll our Kayaks to Dixie lake from our campsite. We stayed at a site in Dixie loop sites 1-30," explains Travyl Couple at Lake Louisa State Park, which provides multiple lake access points.
What campers like
Private, spacious sites: Many equestrian campgrounds offer good separation between sites. "Lake Kissimmee is located in Clermont Florida and is only 20 miles from Disney in Orlando. Campsites are private, separated by lots of flora," notes Barbara J. at Lake Kissimmee State Park.
Clean facilities: State parks maintain high standards for restrooms and shower facilities. "Like all state parks the bathrooms were spotless and rivaled those of a Marriott. We enjoyed the common areas, the observation deck and the hiking," writes Perry J. about Lake Kissimmee State Park.
Wildlife viewing: The natural areas provide opportunities to spot native animals. "On one such hike, we were able to spot a bobcat in pursuit of dinner, which was a delight to see firsthand," shares Dave V. at Lake Louisa State Park, describing the diverse wildlife.
Proximity to attractions: Many equestrian campgrounds provide a natural retreat within reach of Orlando's attractions. "This is a great location to get away from everything, without going far. It has nice, spread out spots, and plenty of activities if you are outdoorsy," explains Joe R. about Lake Louisa State Park.
What you should know
Reservation requirements: All horse campgrounds near Kissimmee require advance bookings. "We stayed on site #43 which has water/elec hookup, dump station nearby. All of the sites seemed level, most are quite private with a fair amount of trees/foliage in between sites," notes Cyndi B. at Lake Louisa State Park, highlighting the need to reserve specific sites.
Limited cell service: Many rural equestrian areas have spotty connectivity. "Barely any cell service so wasn't ideal for my work situation and had to go into town. 1-2 bars of 4G via AT&T," warns Abby M. about Green Swamp West Tract.
Weather considerations: Florida's climate affects camping conditions year-round. "We stayed middle of July for 4 days. Only saw 3 other campers the whole time. Park is super quiet and there is a ton of wildlife roaming," shares Corey K. about Lake Kissimmee State Park, noting how summer heat reduces visitor numbers.
Gate access procedures: Some properties have security measures. "They provide a Lock code for you to enter upon entering so there's always a locked gate during your stay," explains Abby M. about Green Swamp West Tract's reservation system.
Tips for camping with families
Equipment rentals: Several parks offer on-site equipment. "The park holds many trails. There are kayak, bike and canoe rentals at the Dixie Lake area camp store which is located next to the campgrounds," mentions Travyl Couple about Lake Louisa State Park facilities.
Transportation within large properties: Consider rental options for getting around. "Rent a golf cart if you don't have one. Transportation was OK and the Tavern was very nice," advises Donald M. about Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground.
Pool access: Many equestrian campgrounds offer swimming facilities. "The campground is well laid out and the campers really get into the Disney spirit with decorations. The bath houses are immaculate. There is bus service throughout the campground with bus and boat service to the Parks," explains Darcy S. about Fort Wilderness amenities.
Kid-friendly activities: Look for properties with dedicated children's areas. "Westgate River Ranch next door is a beautiful place with fantastic spots. We stayed in spot 323 which had its own swing and fireplace. Our five year old loved riding bike around the park," shares Andoni G. about Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling requirements: Most campgrounds provide level pads for easy setup. "The sites are spotless, big rig friendly, with nice, solid, flat pads. Site 9 is fully concrete. Most of the spots are fully shaded with trees," notes Corey K. about Lake Kissimmee State Park.
Parking configurations: Some sites have challenging access. "There is not a lot of room in the loops to pull your RV into the spot. There is plenty of room between your RV and your neighbor next to you but not a lot of room across from your spot," explains Samantha O. at Fort Wilderness.
Utilities and hookups: Electrical service varies by location. "Only 30amp hook up and no sewer, but there is a dump station. The spots are pretty level and the pads are crushed shells," mentions Corey K. about Lake Kissimmee State Park facilities.
Equestrian-specific facilities: Clarcona Horse Park provides specialized amenities. "Nice sized sites with a cement pad, picnic table, grill and trash can per site. Nice gravel drive for the RV. There are horse events, fun to watch, food truck available for breakfast and lunch day of event," shares Lisa C. about the horse-friendly facilities.
