What to do
Manatee encounters: Year-round access at areas near Nature's Resort. The site has its own marina with pontoon boat rentals and direct water access. "Perfect location on the springs, right next to the famous Homosassa Springs park. The site has its own marina where you can easily rent pontoon boats. We did a manatee tour and they picked us up right at the dock," explains a camper.
Spring swimming: Crystal-clear waters at Mutual Mine Campground offer summer cooling opportunities. "Ok to be honest it was quite peaceful because we went in the heat of the summer BUT the campground itself was secluded and clean... the watering hole helped us stay cool and the camp host was very informative and friendly."
Trail exploration: Multiple interconnected paths through Withlacoochee State Forest lead from campsites to scenic areas. "We hiked extensively in this tract and used Mutual Mine campground as one of our stop-overs. Very nice, open, flat areas to pitch tents and close to hiking trails."
What campers like
Waterfront cabin access: Direct river views at Camp N Water Outdoor Resort. While sites can be tight, the water accessibility compensates. "Sites are tight but normal for florida, has trees, activities, water access and pool."
Clean facilities: Regular maintenance keeps bathhouses in good condition. "This little campground is a nice little campground. Pluses are everything is super clean, the camp hosts are amazing, its easy to get to, great access to Ocala or Dunnellon, all sites are pullthrough."
Recreational amenities: Pools, hot tubs, and playgrounds available at several locations. "They have a great pool, hot tub, clubhouse area. Some RV sites are a challenge to get into, some are larger. They prioritize based on the size of your rig mostly."
What you should know
Variable site layouts: Significant differences between campgrounds and even within the same property. At Rock Crusher Canyon RV Park, "When making reservations make sure to book towards the center of the park. We were in site 129A. The road noise was constant and loud. Site 127A was so close to us that our picnic table was beside their septic hose."
Off-season benefits: Lower crowds during summer months. "This is an excellent place to camp because it is secluded with large private campsites surrounding a clear swimming hole. It is a short drive from the Chaz, and affordable."
Security considerations: Gated access at some properties provides additional safety. "This was a great spot. We visited during the week and hardly had any neighbors. There is a gate code to get in which made me feel very safe and secure."
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Kid-friendly facilities at B's Marina & Campground. "Small campground, very clean. The owners go out of their way to please their guests. After an accident I walk with a cane and can't go far. Sarah the owners daughter took me and my wife in their atv to check out the Gulf Preservr Area."
Pool and recreation areas: Supervised swimming options during hot weather. "We enjoyed our stay at Encore Crystal Isles. The facilities were great. Pool was amazing as was the playground. Would stay again."
Site selection for privacy: Request locations away from high-traffic areas. "Campsite 12 was our favorite (we booked 5 sites total). It was a Family weekend for the books! Would absolutely recommend this campground."
Tips from RVers
Advance planning: Reserve waterfront sites early at Ozello Keys Marina and Campground. Waterfront cabins book quickly during peak season. "Very relaxing" notes a visitor who appreciated the family-friendly atmosphere.
Site accessibility: Check clearances before booking. "We arrived and got our site packet. However when we got to our site someone else was already parked there. We couldn't get hold of management so had to race back to the office as they were closing and they gave us a new site which was a bit smaller with no concrete pad."
Utilities consideration: Power capacity varies between sites. "We enjoyed a nice weekend stay here on the maiden voyage of our new-to-us Class A. 30 and 50 amp service, with water, sewer, and cable hook-ups. Park has nice facilities, including a rec room, heated pool, and spa."
