    Moab, Utah

    Overview

Devils Garden Campground is located deep within the heart of beautiful Arches National Park in Southeastern Utah, at an elevation of approximately 5200 ft.. The campground is situated among natural sandstone arches and fins and is only 18 miles north of the park's entrance and 23 miles from Moab, Utah.

    Recreation

Hiking trails are abundant in Arches, including the Broken Arch Trail, a scenic loop with a trailhead conveniently located within the campground. Trails are varied and offer something for everyone, from the easy 0.3-mile loop around Balanced Rock to the steep and strenuous 3-mile round-trip trail to Delicate Arch. Other recreational activities in the park include guided hiking tours of the Fiery Furnace, an off-road vehicle route, road biking and picnicking.

    Natural Features

The campground is forested with mixed stands of Utah juniper and pinyon pine. Flowering prickly pear cacti, yucca and other desert wildflowers dot the landscape, offering vivid color to the surrounding red rock desert. Arches National Park has the highest concentration of natural arches in the world. Over 2,500 of these unusual rock formations can be found here. Towering spires, fins and balanced rocks complement the arches, creating a remarkable assortment of landforms in a relatively small area. The park is within an arid, high desert environment with hot summers and cold winters.

    Nearby Attractions

Southeastern Utah offers breathtaking scenery, hiking, road and mountain biking opportunities, rafting and scenic driving routes. Canyonlands National Park and Dead Horse Point State Park are within a 45-minute drive of Arches' entrance. Moab offers numerous restaurants, shops and museums. The desert around Moab is a mountain biker's dream, with hundreds of miles of slickrock and single-track trails for all riding abilities.

Ranger review of Morsel Spork at Palisade Basecamp

    Campground Review

I only stayed for an overnight but I did make a reservation, although they were not full. They do close at 6pm (the office does) so late entry doesn't work unless you have made a reservation. I found my map and site info in a mailbox at the office entry. I chose to stay in the section along the river. All the way in the very last site, I think it was site 9. When I got to my site, there weren't very many other campers but I was quickly greeted by a man in a golf cart. Turns out he was the camp host. He was really coming down to view the sunset, which was very nice, but he also chatted with me for a bit.

The site itself was quite small. It was a good thing I had a very small tent. I spent a bit of time just trying to decide where I'd put it due to signs stating no camping beyond a certain point. The camp host kind of sorted it out with me. But I have a tiny two man tent and it was the perfect size for it. There was a picnic table, what appeared to be a brand new firing (this campground is new) and an electric outlet. Of course, there was also the fabulous view of the Colorado River just about 200 feet away. The bathrooms were up the ridge, although there was a porta potty just at the end of the riverfront sites. The bathrooms were pretty extravagant. Heated, flush toilets, free showers, running water sinks, mirrors galore. There were also family restrooms, I did not explore those. Laundry facilities were also onsite. Along with greenhouses, gardens, a swimming pool and a hot tub. What looked like an area to have a gathering with a grill. There was a trail that went around the park too. Up until recently the Colorado River has been too low to fish but I imagine fishing is about to get better now that it's really flowing.

    Product Review

As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I get products to test from time to time - today I am testing Morsel Sporks. I went with the XL Morsel Sporks because we do a lot of eating out of a bag when we are in fire bans, which is often. This trip was no exception, except we are not in a fire ban. At first glance, these sporks seem really durable. Which is good, camping can be rough on utensils. I noted the spoon on one end and the rubber edge for getting every last bit, also the fork with the knife like edge on it. I did use the knife like edge to cut ham and it worked fairly well, not as well as an actual knife but that can be expected. The meals I had this trip made more use of the spoon then the fork. I had a chowder for dinner, which I transferred to a bowl due to the bag it came in being too narrow to really use the morsel spork. The other meal was granola and that package was perfect for the morsel spork. I didn't have any trouble with the spoon for mixing or eating. It held a good amount of food. The spork fit in my mouth well, I have a small mouth and sometimes if a utensil is too big it can be difficult to get in my mouth, but this fit well. They were so simple to clean too. I was using just a jetboil and was able to get my morsel sporks completely clean. Food didn't get stuck anywhere. Another feature that may become useful is the hole on the end of the fork that I could use to attach my spork to my bike while I travel. They are dishwasher safe and BPA free so I am confidant that I can add these sporks to my camping routine.

    Mud Springs Campground

Name suits it when it rains

Mud springs is a small campground tucked away on top of a national monument. To enter the monument, there is a fee, but if you are going to mud springs you can tell them that and not pay the park entrance fee. It's up on glade park but kind of off the beat and path. The road was wet from recent rain and a small stream flowed down the washboard surface. The park itself is small but nice. Quiet. A bit muddy when it rains. We saw deer in the morning. We had a nice tent pad and firerings. Room for hammocks. It's a good place with pit toilets. But it's quiet. We did have a couple things walk through our site, we weren't sure what they were but it put our dog on high alert. One had a bell so that was strange. The other we aren't sure of but our dog watched as whatever it was walked past the tent. There weren't many people there so it probably wasn't another camper but some sort of critter. There is also a fresh spring that you can collect water from I think. We looked at it but didn't opt to collect any water. Lots of trees though which is nice. It seems to rain in July there, although they go through severe droughts and then all of a sudden, rain for two days. But both times we've gone in July, it has rained.

    Serenity!

When I first came to this place, I wasn't sure what to expect. I fell in love with the property and the family whom was a part of this vast beauty! I never realized just how at home and in touch with the land as, I have been blessed enough to become a part of.

When you come here, you become a part of a circle of friends and family, there have been so many relationships to bloom and last its absolutely incredible!

This land was homestead back in 1906, the upper place has an existing cabin that was built in 1907, this is where the owners stay. There have been 3 ponds allocated and are spring fed. By the way the cold spring water is AWESOME!! There is also a communal fire pit, picnic area for all to enjoy.

The Bunkhouse (Rustic Bunk) is a comfy little place to lay your head and sit around to tell stories. The little room next to the shower house is just absolutely adorable and a nice place for dreamland. Then the Cabin that a father and son built will be a treasure for so many more generations! Its the greatest, it is really a sweet place for a family get away. It is very comfortable, with scenery to absolutely fall in love with. The kiddos will have a terrific time too!

    Palisade Basecamp RV Resort

    Perfect Fall Camping Destination

The resort may not be busy in the fall, but that just adds to the appeal of staying this season. We arrived late, but check in was a breeze, and we were able to make ourselves comfortable. The bathhouse is heated and in pristine condition. On property their is a very lovely peach orchard, a dog run, and river access which would be ideal for the summer months. The camp sites are close together but have good trees and even plugs! The cabins are comfortable, with heating, mini fridges and microwaves.

And the best part: Colterris winery is right next door to walk to.

    Palisade Basecamp RV Resort

    Pricey!

General: Sites ranging from tents to vans to full hookup RV to cabins. Be aware all of these options are quite pricey, ranging from $54 to$107 (not including cabins– I don’t know the price of these). We had originally reserved a site last year but had to cut our trip short; we had the option of forfeiting our money or rolling over our reservation to any date in the future, which was appreciated. We reserved our site at the end of January via e-mail and it was confirmed (and a site assigned) via phone in early February. However, when we arrived, our reservation confirmation was not waiting for us on the board with the others. There was no one at the office but Billy, a maintenance employee, was very helpful and told us we could just set up at the site that had been assigned to us.

Site Quality: Varies. In my opinion, the tent sites by the river (Site T7-9) are the best, but these are $67 per night. We were in Van Site 2 which has a short gravel driveway and lawn area, but the driveways between Van Sites 1 and 2 are so close together, that it would not be possible for both vans to have their doors open at the same time (and, of course, there would be zero privacy) Fortunately, no one was in the site next to us. Since van campers sleep (and sometimes cook, depending on the weather) inside their vans, it would have made sense to space the driveways apart with the grass area in between. Van Sites 5 and 6 mirror Sites 1 and 2. Van Sites 3 and 4 have more separation and would be more desirable but sites are assigned, not chosen. The RV sites are spaced a decent amount of distance apart.

Bathhouse: Was very clean with plenty of stalls and sinks. The door to the handicap stall was broken but I assume that will be fixed. The showers looked very clean as well, although I did not use them. The hooks are outside of the stall, which could compromise privacy. There is a vault toilet for the tent sites, although it would not be an undoable walk to the flush toilets.

Activities: There is a pool on site. There are nearby hikes listed on the website, but we did not stay long enough to check them out. Close to the small town of Palisade and the larger hubs of Grand Junction and Fruita. There are also nearby wineries.

Other: There is a laundry room and dishwashing sink, as well as a picnic pavilion.  Note that the dishwashing sink was not located near the tent sites.

Although the facility was clean and well-maintained, the prices are high, and four of the van sites are too close together to make it enjoyable if all sites were occupied. Also, you will hear road noise from nearby I70 and a very loud train sometime in the middle of the night!

    Warner Lake

Quiet, amazing views, entrance to the La Sal.

Warner is a beautiful campground with well maintained sites. For just 5$ a night you get a drive in spot complete with a fire pit and grill, as well as a picnic table. Most sites can accommodate 2 cars and 2 tents. The aspen groves surrounding the campsites are beautiful and the sound of the leaves quaking will lull you to sleep. The vault toilet is almost always clean and usually has a little air freshener in it (thanks kind folks!). A cabin is also for rent at Warner, it’s an old forest service guard station, a small peek inside definitely grabbed my curiosity and I hope to rent it soon. From the campgrounds a short walk leads you to the actual lake which is small but impressive, especially with MT. Haystack looming right behind it. On a clear day the lines between sky, water, mountain, and forest seem to blur into a perfect blend. From here you have so many trail options for hiking, equestrian, and MTB! The Gold Knob trail heads to the North, you have the Oowah-Warner trail which connects you to the majestic green Oowah lake, and several more that take you deep into the La Sal mountains. I stay here often and would recommend it to anyone looking to cool down, get some peace and quiet, and to anyone trying to get their hike on!

    Biking & wine

Decided to rent an RV and drive out to Palisade and stay at Basecamp during the early stages of Corona virus in April.  The campground's services were limited but this was a great place to stay to get away from it all.  The weather in April was beautiful.  The RV portion of the campground doesn't have many trees however there's a tent area by the river that is well shaded.

This is a beautiful area and we loved riding bike on the Fruit & Wine Byway.  The wineries were closed so we had to call ahead to get a few bottles to enjoy.

Devils Garden Campground — Arches National Park

    Beautiful, serene, remote.

Devils Garden campground, at the far end of Arches National Park, is a beautiful spot for a night or a week. You'll never tire of the views, or the many hiking trails nearby. The camp spots are nicely spaced, and if you come during off-season, you might even have the place to yourself. Take the landscape arch trail right from your camping spot, or head towards sand dune arch for an entirely different experience. Kids LOVE sanddune arch, and it's a great place to go to get away from the heat, or the wind.

    Warner Lake

    Cool temps, Clean, Expensive

This campsite is a perfect getaway from the heat in Moab. There is a hand pump water station but the water has a lot of sediment so it is not recommended for drinking. Each campsite has a large locker for your food and trash. There are no dumpsters so be prepared to pack everything out. Also there were deer everywhere at this campground, especially close to the lake. They are not afraid of people and will poke around your site at night when you are in your tent. Overall a very nice place to stay but only 4 stars because $20 a night for a campground without electricity and bathrooms without plumbing is very expensive.

Superb RV park in an ideal location

This RV park had a great shower/ bathroom and laundry facility. Our spot overlooked the Colorado River and had great scenic views. We had no issues with the hookups even though the temperatures were below freezing. It's mandatory to have a heated hose during the colder months. The Wi-Fi had a strong signal and we had very few issues with lagging.

I camped here in September 2019 as a home base while exploring the Moab area. Loved it. For some it may too far outside of Moab - takes about 50 minutes to get to and from - but it was a nice break from the crowds and the leftover heatof the summer. It's at 9,000+, so temps are much cooler, and in late September they were in the low 30s at night.  When i was there the campground was not even half full over the weekend, which surprised me. (I am sure it is a different story during the summer). Sites are spacious with a fire ring (with grate/grill) and picnic table. My particular site (#18) could have fit at least two tents, maybe three (if smaller). There are two vault toilet sites for different sides of the campground.  The ones I used were clean (as clean as vault toilets ever are) and had ample TP.  There are no bear lockers, so you have to lock everything back up in your car at night. Most of the road on the way to the site is paved (La Sal Loop Road) - it's only the last 5 miles on the turn off to the campground that are not, but it is graded gravel/dirt and not a problem (I posted a photo of the road to this page). I drive a small SUV with AWD, but a sedan could make it just fine. The campground is located in a huge aspen grove and is absolutely silent at night (except for the bugling elk that freaked me out around 2am…). If you are counting on the aspens being golden in the fall, they are about two weeks behind the peak in Colorado (fwiw...according to some locals I spoke with).  All in all I am looking forward to coming back here on a future trip.  Really great spot.

    Mud springs

It’s absolutely beautiful here. But don’t do what I did and go here in March. The spring must have leaked all the mud on to the road. Because it was bad. But it was great.

    Clean and beautiful!

Great spot! Clean! Lots of room! The other sites are pretty spaced out. There are toilets and a water faucet near our site. Rained on us a bit the first day so the name definitely fits! 4x4 would help get to the sites! Especially on muddy days!

Very nice higher elv BLM campground

Great BLM campground at higher cool elevation, 8400 elv. 2.8 miles of graded washboard gravel County road from end of pavement. Lots of aspen trees here. Friendly Host on site. Clean vault toilets, 13 sites, $10/$5 senior, 14d limit. All sites are first come, no reservations. Sites are mostly back in and not real big for larger TTs or RVs. Two group sites and a nice large picnic area loop sometimes used for overflow camping. Limited cell signal for Verizon, Att, but no TMobile. No trash and although normally water is available, it was not working in Aug 2021 due to drought. Update Aug 2024 visit..water system is working.

    TRAVELER BEWARE

TRAVELER BEWARE!!! This park uses bait-and-switch practices. First, the pictures posted on Junction West Grand Junction’s website are not representative of the park. This park is filled with permanent residents, skirted trailers, and lots of“stuff” clogging up sites and roads. Second, confirmations and guaranteed reservations mean nothing to Junction West. We had a 3-night, paid-in-full confirmed and guaranteed stay in a standard pull-through site for our 35’ rig. Upon arrival we were directed to a small back-in site that did not allow parking for our truck and it would have been impossible to back the rig in due to all of the vehicles parked on the streets. Junction West was unable to honor our reservation without moving us at least once to different sites in our 3-night stay. This was unacceptable and forced us to go elsewhere. Junction West refused to fully refund us for their mistake. They did, however, refund 2 of the 3 nights and sent an altered confirmation back to us– BAIT-AND-SWITCH. The only bright spot in this interaction was the park we found as an alternative, Canyon West, was amazing. Canyon West RV Park is 10 times better FOR THE SAME PRICE as Junction WEST.

    Perfect

Idyllic campground alongside Animas river against beautiful mountains. Very close proximity to Swiss Alps of America and downtown Durango. Wifi is great, just not in some of the spots further away from office. Showers are nice as well.

Basic, friendly site in an industrial area

This is a basic RV site with lots of gravel and a few trees. It’s in an industrial area. The staff is very friendly and helpful but the office closes early at 6 o’clock. There is a playground for kids and a splash pad that was working.
