Horse-friendly campsites near Gardner, Colorado are limited, with no dedicated horse corrals available at most campgrounds. Huerfano State Wildlife Area offers dispersed camping with spaces for groups and individuals, containing scattered bathrooms and picnic tables. This isolated area provides a peaceful camping experience but lacks horse-specific amenities. The Royal Gorge-Canon City KOA accepts various accommodation types including tents, RVs, cabins, and glamping options, but does not feature horse corrals or specialized equestrian facilities. Most campgrounds in the region allow pets generally but have no specific provisions for horses such as wash racks, tie-outs, or manure disposal areas. Sites are beautifully isolated and wonderfully removed from busy areas.

Trail access for riders varies throughout the region. Cotton Creek Trailhead offers free dispersed camping suitable for both tents and RVs, with big-rig friendly access and permission for fires. Willow Creek Trail provides access to approximately 15 dispersed camp sites along the forest road leading to the parking area for the trail. Restrooms are available at the trailhead, and the location offers direct access to trails near Kit Carson Peak. Hermit Pass OHV area features free dispersed camping with very rough road access that requires careful navigation. The surrounding landscape offers scenic riding opportunities, though equestrians should bring all necessary water and supplies as most dispersed sites lack amenities and drinking water.

      Haggards RV Campground

      Easy access and quiet

My grandson and I stayed there in June for 4 days in a 34ft travel trailer in a pull thru long enough not to have to unhook. The sites were large and plenty of room for my slideout and not too close to next site. About 30 min from Pueblo and 30 from Canon City on Hwy 50 just east of Hwy 115 Full hookup and good WiFi Also had 30 OTA channels. Beautiful sunsets of the mountains Hwy 50 close by but traffic was not loud enough to disturb us Horses on the property as well as a swimming pool and very friendly staff Very nice experience and only 40 min from Colorado Springs or Royal Gorge.

      Great Lake Camping

This was first camping trip staying in a Colorado State park and it was great! We had an electric only back-in site next to the bathhouse which was clean and had 4 separate bathrooms with showers. Our site was located next to a water spigot but we filled our water tank in our RV before we got to our site. We had a fire ring and nice picnic table meant for 8 people! It was super close to the trails to walk my dog on and we walked down to kayak at the lake.

      Alvarado Campground

      Loved with a few exceptions

I absolutely love this area of Colorado. It's breathtaking no matter which direction you look. Decent campground that was a bit too big for my taste. I agree with another reviewer: choose your site wisely! Dirty vault toilets. Water spigots that were almost all dripping (some almost running). I believe it should be posted at time of reservation if there are STEPS involved to set up camp. This site had maybe 10 steps, some in desperate need of repair. As a senior solo camper, this was challenging.  This site was not my choice but the only one available for my time-frame (right next door to the camp host and on the main/incoming road). When we were there, no availability of firewood from camp host, but a load did arrive while we were there. Really noisy campground (plenty of barking dogs), PLUS,a helicopter was doing a training mission two of the days we were there and flew directly over the campground, low-level, 3-5 times each day.

No bear boxes. (there was a hiker/bear interaction on the Venable trail on June 17th.)

Positives were wildlife, scenery, wildflowers, awesome hiking both directions out of the campground, nice fellow campers (those we met).

In hindsight, I would have been really upset if I'd paid full price.

      Alvarado Campground

      Beautiful Spot, Would Return

We stayed at Alvarado for one night on 5/15/2021. We had sites 34 and 35 right across the road from each other. Steve the host was really friendly and stopped by to say hello a couple of times. There are several hiking trails nearby. The vault toilets were right by us and we didn’t have any issues with smell, and they were the cleanest vault toilets I’ve ever seen. The water was closed when we were there because they were waiting on test results before they could open, they did end up opening the water on Sunday so I’m assuming it’s good to go for the season now. Town is really close by (maybe 15 min) so we just went into town and filled up water jugs. Site 34 was a bit close to the campsite next to us. We ended up going to sleep when our neighbors did just because we thought even low voices would be a disturbance to them in their tents. Other than the close proximity, the sites were great and nicely maintained. The sites higher than 35 seem to be spaced a bit further apart so would probably go to the upper sites next time. Great campsite, would return again!

Nice picnic tables and permanent fire pits/grates (which means you can typically use even during stage one fire bans) at every site. A lot of dumpsters and water spots, as well as toilets.

      Pueblo West Campground

      Not worth it.

The Cabins are for locals or people working in the local area and are only available for monthly rent, The tent areas are in direct sunlight with no shaded area and overpriced at $25 a night regardless of what time you check in checkouts at 11:00 am, The Bathrooms are reasonably clean, however scary hag lady comes in as if on crack running around looking like a mad woman, somewhat scary, the horse stalls are disgusting.

      Alvarado Campground

      One of those gems

The campground won't accommodate fifth wheels only horse and rv up to 30 or so. Many of the sites in the 30,s up are useless other than a van. Tent sites are not good. Very uneven pads. The 40,s are much better and all mostly tents. The sites below 30 to 1 are pretty nice. Must say the hosts for the new concession explorUS were doing a bang up job.

Arkansas Point Campground — Lake Pueblo State Park

      Nice find.

We pulled in without a reservation, no problem. We were visiting a friend in Pueblo and this place was close by. (Downtown Pueblo has a really nice riverwalk. Found a free museum that honored Medal of Honor recipients.) When you go in to the campground, the visitor center is there. Helpful staff. The RV side of the campground is to the left. That was pretty full. The tent side was to the right further down a paved road to the right. This section was closer to the lake, very few people and quiet. Might have been the time of year. Each site had a fire ring, a shelter and a paved place to park. Easy for us as well to use the dump site in the RV section. We didn't use it but looked like there were some walking/biking trails close by. Seemed reasonable for $25. It was a nice find. Very clean.

Arkansas Point Campground — Lake Pueblo State Park

Hiking, Biking, Boating, or None of the Above.

First of all, the sites towards the back, by the trails... yeah, get one of those. Trail access directly from those campsites. Also the best views. I had site 16, which was a pull-in site for a trailer, but for this night it was just my, my tent, and my dog.

Speaking of trails, they're everywhere. And amazing. We had a weather front come in as the sun was setting, and the sky was alive with textures and colors. Morning found fog/ mist completely covering the lake, while cloud remnants stuck around to hug the mountains behind the campsites. Good stuff.

Even for a fairly big campground, there is space and there is quiet. Maybe 'tis the season, but autumn seemed to bring out the best in everyone. And yes, it was cold. It's Colorado. High and cold come with the territory. There is a fire pit at each site, and a covered picnic table.

Despite the view of the marina below, the few boats that were out didn't seem to make enough noise to overwhelm the campgrounds. I can't say I remember hearing any boats. Owls, yes. A coyote or two? Probably. Birds? Absolutely. Boats...? Not that I remember.

The bathrooms were very clean, with showers. Thankfully another review mentioned the crazy shower spray though. I remembered that review just in time, saving my clothes from getting soaked. Water pressure is good and hot, just a little chaotic. Don't put your clothes on the bench.

    Guide to Gardner

Dispersed camping near Gardner, Colorado offers quiet isolation in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at elevations between 7,000-9,000 feet. Summer temperatures typically range from 45-80°F with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, while winters bring snow and temperatures well below freezing. The area features mixed pine forests interspersed with meadows and rocky outcroppings.

    What to do

Trail riding to Kit Carson Peak: Access trails near Willow Creek Trail which provides approximately 15 dispersed camp sites along the forest road leading to the trailhead. "Easy access to sites, easy access to trail head. Restrooms also available at trailhead," notes camper Silouan A.

Stargazing in mountain darkness: The remote location of Cotton Creek Trailhead offers exceptional night sky viewing. "The sky is GORGEOUS. The road is very rocky & very rough, so you'll want to have decent clearance and be prepared to take it slow. I've never seen so many stars!" reports Angela E.

Off-highway vehicle exploration: The rough terrain at Hermit Pass OHV area provides challenging rides for experienced drivers. "VERY ROUGH ROAD. Your vehicle will prob need new brakes after this trip. Super beautiful but the road never eases up," warns Carissa G.

    What campers like

Mountain isolation: Campers appreciate the remoteness at Purgatoire Campground, which sits at high elevation. "If you're looking for a beautiful high altitude forested campground that offers solitude and great hiking, you've come to the right place!" shares Jeff T.

Spacious horse-friendly sites: Cotton Creek Trailhead provides ample room for equestrian camping setups. "There are at least ten dispersed spots off the road, CC64. They are large spots with fire rings. Three of them are on the creek," explains Stacey F.

Views and water access: Several campgrounds offer scenic vistas with creek access for horses. "The campsite is beautiful," notes Kyle T. about Huerfano State Wildlife Area, while Patrick W. describes Purgatoire as having "Incredible mountain and creek views."

    What you should know

Road conditions vary significantly: Many roads to horse-friendly sites require high clearance vehicles. At Hermit Pass OHV, the access route is particularly challenging. Cotton Creek Trailhead requires traveling "like 5-10mph for the last like mile" according to Jason W.

Limited services and supplies: Most dispersed camping areas near Gardner lack basic amenities. "This is a very basic and primitive campground so don't expect too much," advises Bryan P. about Purgatoire Campground. Bring all necessary water and food supplies.

Weather preparedness essential: Mountain conditions can change rapidly. "We visited in the height of mud season and it made leveling our rig a little tricky as the levelling blocks kept sinking in the soft Dyrt under the weight of our wheels," reports Jeff T. about camping at Purgatoire.

    Tips for camping with families

Campground alternatives: For families wanting more amenities while visiting with horses, Alvarado Campground offers established sites. "The campground was nice, but we took our atv and the trails are very narrow, and when encountering another atv, theres really no where to get around," notes Alicia S.
