Roosevelt National Forest manages Meeker Park Overflow Campground, a first-come, first-serve option that operates from June through September near Allenspark. This Forest Service campground functions as backup lodging when reservation sites fill up during peak summer months, charging $14 per night with discounts available for senior and access pass holders.
The campground sits in a heavily wooded area with views of Mt. Meeker and surrounding peaks. Pine needles blanket the ground between approximately 15 sites, which accommodate tents and smaller RVs up to about 22 feet. Boyd T. notes "chipmunks and hummingbirds throughout the area" while campers report regular bear activity requiring proper food storage in provided bear boxes.
Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring with grill grate, and bear box. The campground provides maintained porta-potties but no running water, so visitors must bring their own. An on-site host sells firewood and maintains the facilities. Cell service remains weak to nonexistent throughout the area. Sites toward the front offer wider spacing and easier RV maneuvering, while the turnaround at the loop's end proves challenging for larger units.
Access requires driving a standard road, though some reviewers mention the surface can become rough. The campground fills quickly on weekends and after 5 PM on weekdays during summer, making early arrival essential. Crystal C. emphasizes that "this campground offers no running water for those camping here" and recommends bringing all supplies since stores are over 15 miles away.
For additional camping options, explore places to camp near Allenspark or check nearby Olive Ridge and Longs Peak Campground. Arrive early in the day for the best site selection.
