Beautiful spot with a few too many bugs
We arrived around Monday lunchtime. There are 19 sites in this area as they are all designated. There were only two available when we arrived so we selected site number three. We are 10 campers and unfortunately the sites on the right hand side of the road are on a slight incline. The road getting in is very easily accessible and you do not need four-wheel-drive. There were numerous large rigs parked up around the area. Do you know Gulch dispersed, campsites, sit in a valley with a wide open meadow, that I imagine, would attract deer, elk and moose at dawn and dusk. Unfortunately, we did not see any. The area is also immediately accessible to both the Buno Gulch trail head and also the Buno Gulch connector trail, which gives you access to south park trail 600 and also up to Kirby Gulch so there is a lot of great hiking in this area. Since there is no longer any dispersed camping available on Guanella Pass, Buno Gulch and Kirby Gulch have become incredibly popular areas. I would guess that on weekends all the sites would be taken.
The biggest drawback of this area in the middle of July was the amount of insects. We were subjected to mosquitoes and biting flies, so make sure you go prepared. Even covering ourselves with bug repellent did not help as they seem to find it very attractive. They even got us through our thick clothing.
