Steep Ravine Campground — Mount Tamalpais State Park

    Beautiful views, lots of space

These cabins are well worth the cost. There is a separate bedroom, you could sleep 2 couples on beds easily with extra floor space and a small individual bunk for larger families. No electricity but the wood burning stove provides some light. Bring candles and lanterns and some fabric for curtains for privacy.

    Narrows Lodge Resort

    Quiet, fun, relaxing

We rented a camping yurt and we were so surprised how big it is! We received a key to our own bathroom and shower! They had a sink to was dishes in and a place to clean our fish. We rented a motor boat for a few hours to explore the beautiful lake.  Pet friendly. Great little beach. A dock to fish from. Everything you need to have a great time! They also have bigger yurts and cabins to rent. Also, RV parking .We have already booked another visit.

    Quaint

I loved the quaint feel of our campsite. The only downside was that the main road runs alongside the grounds. Our site was small but my eyes were pleased by how it looked. Site had a fire ring, picnic table, and a stone grill. The grounds had running water, flush toilets and quarter showers.

Camped here at night and explored point reyes during the day.

    San Francisco North-Petaluma KOA

    Great camp for the kids

This KOA is pretty big with plenty of options for RV sites. Wide variety of full hook-ups or partial hook-ups. Like most (if not all) KOAs, you can also tent camp or tent cabins. Good size dog park for the pets to run and be free, as well as plenty of fun activities to entertain the kiddos. For us, this is a great spot to shoot down the highway and pull in for a few days to get away from the hustle and bustle of normal life! Close to downtown Petaluma with plenty of premium shops and restaurants.

Samuel P. Taylor State Park Campground

    Crowded, but beautiful!

This campground is beautiful, set in the redwoods, with a creek and nature trails. It has all the amenities: flush toilets, showers, fire pits, running water, and grills. The only drawback is the sites are small and close together, affording very little privacy. The campground can be pretty loud at night too. If you're looking for peace, quiet, and seclusion, this might not be the campground for you. We really enjoyed it though because we have a three year old, and with all the other noise in the campground, I didn't have to feel bad when she was being loud. Also, watch out for the raccoons! They stole my bread that I stupidly left out, and then tried to get into our ice chest. There are lockers provided at each campsite. Use them!

Samuel P. Taylor State Park Campground

Nice shady retreat in beautiful redwoods.

We have previously tent camped and car camped here and we really enjoy it. It can get warm in the summer, but the cool moist ocean fog comes in and blankets the area in the evenings, which can really cool it down. On our first visit, there was no running water or showers, but they did have portapotties. On our second visit, water was available, but it was not potable, and the showers and toilets were still not working. Not sure if that is a Covid related issue or a temporary maintenance issue. It’s worth a drive through prior to staying, in order to find a site that fits your needs, they have many different sized sites available, and we like the sites in the high teens (18 & 19), as they seem a bit larger and are right along the creek. The sites appear to be your standard state park equipment with a fire pit, a picnic table and a lockable pantry. The parking area for our site was large enough to accommodate our SUV and another vehicle. There is firewood generally available with the camp host or at the gate. Good cell signal with Verizon. Because of the amazing redwood canopy, it might be hard to get good sun for solar in most of the sites. There are all kinds of trails available, as well as a paved path that runs for at least a mile or so along the creek, that used to be the old railroad line through that area. They have informational signs all over the place providing historical or ecological information. Access to the creek is seasonally restricted for spawning, and I believe that goes from spring to about mid June or July. Also, lots of poison oak in the unmaintained areas and off the trails, so be aware.

Manchester Beach / Mendocino Coast KOA

    Safe sound and beautiful

Senior camping at it's best. A heated cabin and pad on bed that was comfortable. Got showers and a family vibe. Great location for scouting Mendocino coastline and Pt Arena. No wifi though so don't bring work.

Samuel P. Taylor State Park Campground

    Group site

The group site was spacious and had a wate spigot, two fire rings, two grills and three picnic tables. There was room for two vehicles and is right next to a bathroom with quarter showers. It's a large campground in a beautiful park. Didn't hike but enjoyed road biking around.

Guide to Rio Nido

Russian River cabin accommodations near Rio Nido, California sit at 100-200 feet elevation in Sonoma County's coastal redwood region. Summer temperatures typically range from 55-85°F with cool evenings, while winter brings 35-60°F temperatures and frequent rainfall. Most cabin facilities maintain year-round operations, though seasonal maintenance closures occur at several locations during winter months.

What to do

River activities: Casini Ranch Family Campground offers direct Russian River access for swimming, kayaking, and fishing. According to one visitor, "Casini Ranch is a great campground, right off the river. You can kayak down the river and the campgrounds have a big variety of sizes, some on and off the river." Many cabin rentals provide convenient beach or dock access for water recreation.

Wine tasting excursions: Ritchey Creek Campground cabins provide affordable lodging for Napa Valley exploration. A visitor notes, "Camping here leaves lots of money for food and wine splurges!" The campground sits "halfway between St. Helena and Calistoga giving you access to the Napa Valley at a very reasonable price."

Town exploration: Cabin accommodations at Johnson's Beach offer walkable access to Guerneville's shops and dining. "This is our little spot when we just don't want to be in the wilderness... We spent one afternoon just strolling on the strip and checking out stores," reports one camper. The location provides both river access and proximity to local businesses.

What campers like

Waterfront views: Porto Bodega Marina & RV Park cabins feature coastal bay views. A visitor described, "You can see the Milky Way at night while listening to the soft foghorn and every now and then a soft bark of a seal... Wake up in the morning to either fog or bright warm sun overlooking a very sleepy Glassy harbor with fishing boats bobbing in the docks."

Family activities: Cloverdale/Healdsburg Campground cabins include access to numerous amenities. "Love this spot for glamping it has a fishing pond, swimming pool, and a hiking trail! Very beautiful scenery!" writes one camper. Another notes facilities include "A small pond to fish. Campsites were pretty maintained and spacious."

Clean facilities: Visitors consistently mention cabin cleanliness as a priority. At Johnson's Beach, "Chris, who manages the site is pretty awesome and nice." Another camper reports, "Clean toilets, warm showers, river access, electrical outlets, what's not to like?" Most cabin properties maintain regular cleaning schedules for both individual units and shared facilities.

What you should know

Site selection matters: At River Bend Resort, site location significantly impacts the experience. One reviewer cautions, "Interior RV sites seem to be full-time residents and very cramped. Tent sites near the river are unbelievably cramped." Another notes, "Nice people run this very nice but pricey resort with 2 nite minimum! As the other reviewer mentioned it is next to the Russian River. Restaurant next door. What was not mentioned is that it is right next to the highway so we heard frequent traffic day & night."

Reservation timing: Most Russian River cabin rentals require advance planning, especially during summer months. At Casini Ranch, "In the summer months it seems to be very busy. They have a lot of activities for the kids." Winter offers more availability but with cooler, wetter conditions.

Budget considerations: Cabin rentals vary widely in price. Porto Bodega cabins run "Full hook ups over $100. Dry sites for $65." One visitor noted the "place was great full hook up W,E,S,C you get a fire pit and a picnic table... the only reason why it's not a 5 star is the price."

Tips for camping with families

Activity planning: San Francisco North-Petaluma KOA offers family-centered cabin options with numerous amenities. "Great place with loads to do for the family. Swim, play and explore all the north bay has to offer," notes one visitor. Another adds, "They have a small petting zoo, a pool, playground areas, and more."

Noise awareness: Family-friendly cabins often mean active environments. One camper at Casini Ranch notes it's "Very popular campground for families and families with dogs. In the summer months it seems to be very busy... Most sites are close to each other which makes for early mornings/late nights."

Activity schedules: Ask about organized activities when booking. Casini Ranch "have an insane amount of kids activities! Face paining, s'mores campfire, hay ride, parks, kareoke- just to name a few!" Another visitor mentions, "They have cook outs- bring a side dish and enjoy the free hot dogs and hamburgers! Good bands play while you eat!"

Tips from RVers

Access considerations: Many cabin sites accommodate RVs too, but require advance planning. At Johnson's Beach, "We were there on a weekday during the summer so it wasn't too busy but on a weekend I think it gets full." Most locations have specific arrival procedures, with some noting "We waited behind a dozen cars to check in."

Full-hookup cabins: Some cabins offer RV-style amenities. Porto Bodega provides "full hook-up with cable TV decent TV reception too. Cell worked well. Close to restaurants and grocery." Power availability varies across locations, with 30/50 amp service sometimes available.

Proximity services: Cabin locations near towns offer convenience. One visitor at Cloverdale/Healdsburg Campground mentions the location is "Very close to the town of Cloverdale about a 5-10 min drive!" The San Francisco North-Petaluma KOA is "near shopping for any needs" according to visitors.
