Cabin rentals near Murrieta, California provide camping options in a region that spans from inland mountains to coastal areas, with elevations ranging from 1,000 to 6,500 feet. These accommodations serve as convenient baselines for exploring San Diego County, Riverside County, and Orange County wilderness areas. Seasonal temperatures can fluctuate from below freezing in winter months at higher elevations to over 95°F during summer at lower elevations.
What to do
Boating on Lake Elsinore: Launch Pointe Recreation Destination offers boat rentals for fishing and recreation on the lake. "We spent Spring break here with the family... The boat launch is very near by too but we had no use for that," notes Bryan H., who used the campground as a base for exploring multiple destinations.
Mini golf and recreation: Temecula-Vail Lake KOA has miniature golf, disc golf, and multiple swimming pools. "Free mini golf, horseshoes, disc golf and pool area with 3 pools, one specific for kids. Golf cart friendly," shares Jessica L., highlighting the family-friendly amenities.
Hiking at Lake Hemet: Lake Hemet Campground offers multiple hiking trails with wildlife viewing opportunities. "We didn't catch anything but we did see some bald eagles which was super cool!" shares Jennifer D., who enjoyed exploring the natural surroundings despite not having fishing success.
BMX biking: Some campgrounds maintain dedicated bike trails for different skill levels. "My son loved the bmx bike trails," reports Marcella D. at Lake Park RV Resort, where cabins are available alongside traditional camping spots.
What campers like
Proximity to attractions: Launch Pointe Recreation Destination serves as a central point for multiple day trips. "Location wise - awesome. We used the campground as a base camp to spend time in LA and San Diego as well as a day in Joshua Tree National Park. 1-2 hours from everything," explains Bryan H.
Entertainment options: Seasonal activities keep families engaged at many cabin locations. "They also have a band on Saturday nights," mentions Marcella D. about Launch Pointe, highlighting evening entertainment that many cabin campgrounds provide.
Pool facilities: Temecula-Vail Lake KOA offers multiple swimming options. "Great all around campground. If you are new to tent camping this place is great for getting familiar with your gear before you go out and 'rough it'. Bathrooms, showers, swimming pools, activities for the kids, general store, etc," says Geoffrey R.
Private mountain settings: Via Del Gavilan Camp provides a more secluded cabin experience. "This property offers spectacular mountain views. The RV provides comfortable beds and there is even an outdoor grill. Off the beaten path, this location is secluded and peaceful," reports Ashley F.
What you should know
Cell service varies: Coverage can be spotty depending on location and provider. "There was no option to upgrade so you had to use your own hotspots. Very disappointing and will be one of the reasons we don't go back," notes Brian C. regarding internet at Launch Pointe.
Lake conditions fluctuate: Water levels and quality at Lake Elsinore can change seasonally. "The beach was right there, close and beautiful right on Lake Elsinore. Yet the beach was disgusting, stinky and covered with algae," reports Brian C.
Wildlife encounters: Dixon Lake Campground and other locations have active wildlife. "Critters heard roaming around campsite at night (either a raccoon or coyote came within 5 feet of our tent while we were sleeping)," warns Justin T., recommending campers "Keep a light on over night at camp to deter critters."
Seasonal insects: Yellow jackets can be problematic in warmer months. "BAD yellow jacket problem during this time of month (very aggressive and got into your food/face)," cautions Justin T. about Dixon Lake during summer stays.
Tips for camping with families
Choose sections with kid-friendly layouts: Guajome Regional Park offers designated family areas. "We spent the weekend up in the 'Rincon' loop, it was nestled up away from the main group of RVs. It was a perfect spot for the kiddos to ride their bikes and goof around, there is a big loop of about 20+ sites in that area and was loaded with mostly younger families like ours," advises Scott V.
Look for splash pads: Water features provide entertainment beyond swimming pools. "Amenities are very good for young kids. Canopy Court area has easy and close access to the splash pad, the playground, a large grass area, and even the pool," shares Bryan H. about Launch Pointe.
Consider noise levels: Different cabin areas have varying activity levels. "This park really is made for RVs, so tent camping is a little awkward, but doable. We pitched our tent on the parking spot. Most of the sites are on a bit of a slope so that will be the case for most spots... One downside was the streetlights -- they kept them on all night and they were VERY bright right next to our tent," notes Ashley C. about Guajome Regional Park.
Tips from RVers
Check hookup capacity: Wilderness Lakes RV Resort sometimes has limited 50-amp availability. "They don't have enough 50amp sites and not all of them are always working. This park is first come / first served and they don't prohibit a 30amp rig from taking a 50amp site, so you can see the problem," explains david N.
Prepare for leveling challenges: Uneven sites may require additional equipment. "The sites were all uneven. Every camper we saw had to do major leveling efforts," warns Brian C. about Launch Pointe Recreation Destination.
Insulate water connections in winter: Lake Hemet Campground experiences freezing temperatures. "Bring insulation for your water hose or have some type of method that will keep your water lines from freezing. Our water hose froze the first night," advises Donovan, who stayed at Lake Hemet's premium hook-up sites.
