Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park offers Star Mesa Equestrian Campground for riders wanting to bring their horses to southern Orange County. Each campsite includes a private corral directly next to the camping area for convenient horse care. The park maintains an extensive equestrian trail system that connects directly to multiple wilderness areas across its 8,000-acre property. While the campground water system has been temporarily disabled, water hookups are normally available at each site. Located just 15 minutes from urban areas, the park enforces a no-alcohol policy and provides ranger patrols for security. Wildlife sightings are common throughout the park with deer, rabbits and birds frequently observed near the trails.
What to do
Hiking on extensive trail network: Lake Park RV Resort provides access to a variety of hiking trails with scenic lake views. The campground's well-kept grounds serve as an excellent base for day hiking. "There are many hiking trails nearby in all directions. I usually ride to Caspers from the campsite or Trabruco creak up to Holy Jim," notes Mike G.
Fishing opportunities: Lake Skinner Recreation Area offers fishing with additional permit fees. "The lake is stocked with fish throughout the year, but they require you to buy a riverside county lakes fishing permit for each day if you want to fish. Boat rentals are available but bring your own boat," explains Timothy A.
Equestrian activities: Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park accommodates horse owners with dedicated facilities. "Casper is a great park located 15min from the city. It has three main camping areas that cater to campers, RVs and horses. There are a number of hiking trails around that range from a 1 to 12 miles," reports Berton M.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: O'Neill Regional Park offers more secluded camping options. "We stayed at campsite #58 which we felt was very large and private. Will definitely come back," shares Johnny G. The campground provides a natural setting despite its proximity to urban areas.
Clean facilities: Launch Pointe Recreation Destination maintains high standards of cleanliness. "Launch Pointe was a great stay for our family and dog! Check in was very speedy. The campground was clean as can be- no overflowing garbages, all utilities tastefully hidden," notes Stephen H.
Family-friendly environment: Rancho Jurupa RV Park offers numerous activities for children. "Beautiful views all around Sunrise, Sunset and Night sky. Sights of all kinds of birds like hawks and herons. Water park and mini golf for kids. Showers and laundry convenient," writes Xochiquetzal G.
What you should know
Limited cell service: Some parks have connectivity challenges. "If you're one that needs WI-FI this isn't the spot for you. Your phones hot spot may not even work," explains Troy A. regarding Lake Perris State Recreation Area.
Varying site quality: Lake Skinner Recreation Area has inconsistent site conditions. "The campsites need some upgrades as well as the facilities but overall the area was clean and the staff friendly. It was a very good experience for myself and my family," reports Dave D.
Temperature variations: Dripping Springs Campground experiences significant heat during summer months. "There's a great hike right out the end of the campground, although it gets HOT because this is more desert land than forest," warns Kate W.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly hiking: O'Neill Regional Park provides accessible trails designed for children. "Easy and fun 'Story Trail' hike for children. The hike features a new book every month, each page is mounted to a placard along the trail," notes Johnny G.
Water activities: Launch Pointe Recreation Destination offers multiple water options for families. "Amenities are very good for young kids. Canopy Court area has easy and close access to the splash pad, the playground, a large grass area, and even the pool," explains Bryan H.
Educational opportunities: Rawhide Ranch provides unique learning experiences for children. "The perfect spot for family, children's, or scout horse camps! My father and I both went as kids (40 years apart) and remember and treasure our experience," shares Amanda K.
Tips from RVers
Leveling challenges: Lake Skinner sites require preparation for uneven ground. "The sites were all uneven. Every camper we saw had to do major leveling efforts," reports Brian C.
Space considerations: Rancho Jurupa Park offers ample room for larger RVs. "Large concrete pads, easy backing in and hooking up. Lots of grass, great place to camp in groups," notes Paul C.
Hookup availability: Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park offers electrical connections at certain campsites. "I switched to a travel trailer several years ago and now use Ortega Flats campground. The sites are big and well spaced, with 30 amp electric. The water is off for the time being," explains Ronald.
