Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Janesville, CA

Antelope Lake Recreation Area campsites welcome pets across multiple campgrounds including Boulder Creek, Long Point, and Lone Rock. Most sites maintain natural spacing between neighbors with ample tree coverage providing privacy and shade for dogs. Campground hosts generally enforce pet policies including leashed pets outside of vehicles and designated areas. The lake allows pet access for swimming in most areas but owners should be aware of boat traffic during busy summer periods. Camp host at Antelope Lake can be strict about site usage rules and may require additional payment even when moving to first-come, first-serve sites that aren't reserved. Dogs must remain on leash at all campsites, and owners should bring waste bags as pet stations aren't provided at most locations.

Honey Lake Campground provides a tranquil pet-friendly option with shaded tent and RV sites overlooking the lake. The hostess maintains clean facilities and the small on-site store stocks pet essentials when camping supplies run low. Days End RV Park in Standish offers full hookup sites with concrete pads and grassy areas suitable for pet exercise, though the surrounding area has limited recreational opportunities for dogs. Susanville RV Park features well-maintained concrete sites with picnic tables at each location, though campers note the bathroom facilities lock from 7pm to 7am which can inconvenience those with pets needing late night walks. For dispersed camping with dogs, Antelope Mountain offers primitive sites with cell service, though finding level areas can be challenging and wind exposure is common on all but a few tucked-away sites under tall trees.

Rocky Point Campground - Lake Almanor

Beautiful, Good fishing, great swimming & boatingwe

We have been going here for years.  The spaces are large, sunny and shaded with lovely trees and all within walking  distance from the lake.  Staff is friendly and helpful and the park is always clean.  Love the fishing, swimming and hiking.  Beautiful views of the mountains and lake any direction.  Family and pet friendly at a reasonable cost.

    Little Bear RV Park

    Gem in the words

Surprised how well maintained and friendly staff assisting with set up. Nice dog large area without enclosed fencing. All short term campers are located in the center very cozy. Lots of families and kids and noisy. We were able to ride bike in the park and on the road that was safe with little to no traffic. Several grass areas for guest minus pets. The perimeter areas are for permanent residence with several for sale. So no chance of getting some nice sites. A number of tiny cottages to rent. The railroad tracks along side of park and loud in early hours you got use to it. Will return but off season when kids are back in school. Also no access to creek from park. Recommend very clean park

    Gold Lake 4x4 Campground

    Breath Taking Views

Situated out in the Sierra Buttes in California. This bad boy was shown to me by my father. A place to really escape the busy city life, let alone people. Located near Gold Lake you’ll have access to fishing, phenomenal hiking trails that overlook the Sierra Buttes. People respect the area so the conditions are what you expect nature to be like. Not run down with garbage and all. Highly recommend this campground. Been going here once a year.

Rare USDA camp with power and water

Stayed one night and loved Eagle Lake. Rare USDA campground with power and water. Lovely forest area shades the camp. Lots of families with bikes and dogs all on leashes. Great bike paths to ride or walk right next to the lake.

    Yellow Creek Campground

    Hidden gem!

Most people flock to the nearby Lake Almanor or Butt Valley campgrounds, so Yellow Creek Campground is a nice place to go to escape bigger and busier spots. Nestled in the pines and bordering the Humbug valley, this campground has some of the best views in Northern CA.  It's off the beaten path a bit. About an 8 mile trip down a gravel road but very well maintained and easy to get a smaller RV back in there if you like. There's a natural soda spring on the entrance road where the local indigenous Maidu used to gather and drink for healing.  https://www.outdoorproject.com/united-states/california/soda-springs-historic-site

Tahoe National Forest Wild Plum Campground

    Hidden Gem!

Wild Plum is a beautiful campground close to the Yuba on Haypress Creek. Large campsites in the pine forest with lots of privacy at most sites. Most of the campers are there to ride the Downieville down hill which is right around the corner. Gold Lake highway is close by which gives outdoor enthusiasts access to the mighty majestic Sierra Buttes, Sardine Lake and dozens of other beautiful alpine lakes. This is outdoor recreation Mecca and the campground is amazing!

Butte Lake Campground — Lassen Volcanic National Park

If you want remote in Lassen…

Stayed at Butte Lake for two nights in late June 2022. None of the campsites has an unobstructed lake view, but it’s a short walk to the day use area on the shore. This is a good jumping off point for a ton of hikes on this side of Lassen NP; excellent signage tells you how far each destination is. The sites themselves are not very private; kids were rolling through our site on bikes all afternoon and evening, dogs were barking at each other, it was a little crowded feeling even though it was probably only at half capacity. (There were reservation cards on almost all the sites, but it seems like a lot of people didn’t show up.) That said, after driving past some of the other campgrounds right next to the highway, I was happy to have chosen this one.

    Gold Lake 4x4 Campground

    Beautiful Lakeside views

Gold Lake is a gem with spectacular views all around you.  The sites are not available for reservations so you will need to get there mid week to get a prime spot.  Sites 17-24 are my favorite with beautiful views of the lake.  Dogs are allowed as long as they are on a leash.  There are great trails to hike all over Lakes Basin with spectacular views of many different lakes.  There are also an off-road vehicle campsites.  Gold Lake itself is one of the largest in the Basin that allows motorized boats.  I would highly recommend this lake for kayakers and hikers, during off season it is extremely peaceful.

Guide to Janesville

Campgrounds near Janesville, California range from mountain lake settings at 5,000-5,500 feet elevation to high desert environments in the eastern Sierra transition zone. The area experiences hot summers with daytime highs often reaching 85-95°F between June and August, while spring and fall offer milder temperatures with occasional thunderstorms. Summer visitation peaks after July 4th, with most campgrounds filling by Thursday afternoons during peak season.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Antelope Lake Recreation Area supports diverse fishing activities throughout summer. "Gorgeous spot with lots of wildlife. The lake is perfect for fishing, kayaking, and splashing around," notes Megan R. The water warms enough for comfortable water activities by mid-June.

Water sports: Campers can enjoy multiple water activities at Merrill Campground near Eagle Lake. "The lake is appropriately named as we saw bald eagles daily," reports Lori T., who enjoyed the paved Eagle Lake Recreation Trail that connects to Christie Campground and the marina with an approximate 4-mile out-and-back route in each direction.

Wildlife viewing: The forested areas near Boulder Creek Campground offer wildlife observation opportunities. Multiple visitors report seeing deer, various bird species, and occasionally black bears. Laura F. mentions that "water is warm enough to swim June-August" with "great fishing" opportunities at Antelope Lake.

What campers like

Spacious campsites: Lone Rock Campground offers generous spacing between sites. "Nice big campsites. Quiet and remote. A bit of a steep grade to get there but well worth it," writes Jason C., who enjoyed the lake access and isolated areas available via access roads.

Clean facilities: Long Point Campground maintains well-kept amenities. Alison notes, "This is one of three campgrounds on Antelope Lake near Susanville CA. Several of the sites are near the lake. All sites are well shaded with fir and pine trees." The campground provides consistent maintenance of restroom facilities.

Natural shade: The tall conifers throughout Merrill Campground provide ample shade at most sites. As Susan L. observed, "The campground is set in deep pines that reach the sky alongside a wide Eagle Lake." This natural cover helps moderate summer temperatures that regularly exceed 85°F.

What you should know

Weather considerations: Mountain thunderstorms occur regularly in summer months. Marisa D. experienced unexpected conditions at Lone Rock: "I went opening weekend so it actually was not busy and snowed which also made it not busy."

Campground hosts: Honey Lake Campground has attentive staff managing the property. One camper notes, "The hostess is a wonderfully kind lady and her little store had everything you need." Another mentions, "Owners were nice. This is a Passport America park and I have a membership so it only cost $25/night."

Facility access hours: Some campgrounds restrict bathroom access overnight. At Susanville RV Park, Paul M. notes, "The one thing that was bothersome was they lock the showers and bathrooms from 7pm to 7am," which can create challenges for overnight needs.

Tips for camping with families

Swimming areas: At Antelope Lake, Laura F. recommends checking conditions first: "Water is warm enough to swim June-August. Great fishing!" However, families should note busier weekend crowds from mid-July through August.

Traffic awareness: Days End RV Park provides convenient overnight accommodations when traveling with children. "Very clean, full hook ups, can accommodate big rigs. Weekly, monthly, overnight," reports Seathrough H., though noting "there is nothing around to do" for extended family activities.

Pet-friendly options: For pet-friendly camping near Janesville, California, Lone Rock Campground permits leashed pets throughout the property. Marisa D. mentions its advantages for unplugging: "There is no cell reception so great to disconnect," making it ideal for family time without digital distractions.

Tips from RVers

Level sites: Laufman Campground offers basic accommodations for smaller rigs. Tamara W. shares, "Took in a 19 foot trailer - there were 3 sites we could easily use. The surrounding Forest is gorgeous." However, access requires navigating rougher roads.

Hookup availability: Days End RV Park provides consistent utility connections. C.W. reports, "Only con would be limited shade as the trees are still growing and the slight elevation of the sewage connection." The family-owned business offers attentive service.

Seasonal considerations: Most forest service campgrounds near Janesville close by early October. Boulder Creek Campground typically operates from May 25 to September 3, while Merrill Campground extends slightly longer from May 15 to October 31, offering late-season options for RVers seeking pet-accommodating camping near Janesville.
