Russian River flows through Duncans Mills, a small community nestled in the redwoods of Sonoma County. Camping here offers direct access to coastal redwood forests at elevations ranging from 30-500 feet. Summer temperatures average 70-85°F during the day with cool 50-55°F nights, while winter brings more rainfall with temperatures between 45-60°F during daytime hours.
What to do
Water recreation at Johnson's Beach: Located just minutes from downtown Guerneville, campers can enjoy the Russian River for swimming and paddling. "Russian River is right out front of the campground. They offer kayaks canoes, and whatever else you want to rent," notes reviewer Leafe Z. of Johnson's Beach.
Mountain biking access: Spring Lake Regional Park connects to Trione-Annadel State Park, offering extensive mountain biking trails. "Connected to the west of Spring Lake is Trione-Annadel State Park, a wildly popular spot for local mountain bikers. In fact, as a hiker I tend to avoid Annadel because there are so many mountain bikers," explains Michael I. from Spring Lake Regional Park.
Wine country exploration: Use your campsite as a base for vineyard visits. A reviewer at Bothe-Napa Valley State Park shares, "This is our second time here. It's so nice to be right in the Napa Valley. We found a great trail close by at Lake Hennessey. If you're a wine drinker, during non-COVID times you can catch a wine bus from here!"
What campers like
River swimming spots: The Russian River provides numerous swimming areas with varying depths. One camper at River Bend Resort notes, "The private beach is great for kids (and adults). Easy swimming without a strong current. Lots of shallows but a deep swimming hole are for adults too."
Coastal proximity: Many campgrounds offer convenient access to the Point Reyes National Seashore. "If you want to explore the Point Reyes National Seashore you do not have many options. This facility has been there a long time, and while not the best, it gives you great access," mentions a reviewer at Olema Campground.
Redwood forest settings: Campsites nestled among redwoods provide natural shade and cooler temperatures. "Lovely site in redwoods. Sites are close, but have some privacy. Stream is accessible shallow. Beautiful trees," says gabriel F. of Samuel P. Taylor State Park.
What you should know
Site privacy varies significantly: Some campgrounds offer more secluded spots than others. At Samuel P. Taylor State Park Campground, one camper advises, "Had I chosen the site to my left, or a few more down the road, I would have barely noticed them at all - sites 47-44 had no one across the way, more private, set back."
Membership requirements: Some facilities near Duncans Mills operate on a membership basis. A reviewer at Duncans Mills Campground notes, "This is a club - We are members and totally enjoy the Russian River. You can fish, swim and kayak or canoe. The canoes are free to use."
Weather patterns: Expect significant temperature changes between day and night. "One thing to note, the night is COLD up this way, and mere miles will cover several different weather systems. Bring layers," advises Kathleen C.
Tips for camping with families
Water parks for kids: Some campgrounds offer access to inflatable water features. "Walked to the water park on spring lake that featured an inflatable, floating obstacle course/bouncy house thing. The kids LOVED that," reports Daniel D. about San Francisco North-Petaluma KOA.
Multiple playgrounds: Many campgrounds have dedicated play areas. "Awesome place for families. A lot of different areas for the kids. Swimming, giant bounce area, and mild weather. Coffee bar, large play grounds and near shopping for any needs," notes Chris B.
Kid-friendly hiking trails: Look for shorter nature trails with wildlife viewing opportunities. "We walked the 'Nature Trail' through the campground & when we tried to sit they would swarm. But it was a nice short easy walk, where we saw a rabbit, turkeys, lizards, deer, & quails!" shares Brittney L.
Tips from RVers
Site layout considerations: Many RV sites are arranged in loops or cul-de-sacs. "RC/van spots are arranged in cul de sacs, tent spots on the edges of fields," notes gabriel F. at Olema Campground.
Hookup access varies: Not all sites offer full hookups, so check availability when booking. At Bodega Bay RV Park, a reviewer shares, "Very enjoyable stay. The park is clean, quiet and there's a few trails that take you to the Beach. It's about a 30 min walk but an easy one. Theres electric, cable and water at the pole. The sewer is up near the entrance."
Dumping station locations: Take note of sanitary dump locations, which aren't always conveniently placed. "Arrive at this park full of water. There was only one spigot with threads (for attaching hose to fill tanks); it was at spot 29," advises Tammy B. about Spring Lake Regional Park.
