Dispersed camping near Angwin, California offers primitive sites concentrated between Lake Berryessa and Clear Lake. The region sits approximately 1,800 feet above sea level with hot, dry summers reaching 90°F and mild winters. Most dispersed camping areas remain accessible year-round but summer brings increased fire restrictions and winter storms can make dirt access roads impassable.
What to do
Fishing spots: Smittle Creek provides excellent lake access for anglers. "This sweet little spot is a paddle boarding and fishing dream. Primitive site where Smittle Creek flows into Lake Berryessa," notes Stuart S.
Hiking trails: The surrounding areas offer varied terrain for hikers of all levels. At Cowboy Camp, trails border a seasonal stream. "Next to a stream and surrounded by hills. The only tough part is getting across the stream to some of the hikes," reports Jorg F.
Wildlife watching: Early mornings provide opportunities to spot deer and various bird species. "Had deer, butterflies, and humming birds all around us. Babbling brook, cool and comfortable in mid-October," describes a camper at BLM Sheldon Creek.
What campers like
Solitude: Many sites provide isolation from other campers. At Lakeview Dispersed Campground, "Only two other groups were set up so not crowded, plenty of spots," reports Kirra L.
Lake views: Some campsites offer views of Clear Lake. "Beautiful spot with some views of the lake. No services, but had cell service (CC)," mentions Robert H. about Lakeview Dispersed.
Free camping: All dispersed sites around Angwin are free. "Great free campground! We've stayed here many times. It's open, grassy level and quiet," says a camper about Cowboy Camp.
What you should know
Vehicle requirements: Many access roads demand appropriate vehicles. At High Valley Rd Dispersed, one camper warns: "The road is EXTREMELY narrow and windy on the edge of a cliff. There is no way to turn around once you start up it."
Weather considerations: Wind conditions can affect comfort at higher elevation sites. "It was windy in the evening, but that died down during the night and in the morning we had breakfast in the sun in a clearing," notes Mo H. about Lakeview Dispersed.
Seasonal closures: Some areas close without notice. At Cowboy Camp, visitors reported: "Visit was for 11/19/2024 found the gates locked, no entry. Seasonal? No signage to tell."
Tips for camping with families
Site selection: Choose established sites with existing fire rings when possible. "Where I set up there were some log chairs and a previously built fire pit," notes Joe M. at Lakeview Dispersed.
Bug preparation: Pack insect repellent as some areas have significant fly populations. "No trees just dry open land inhabited by an unusual amount of flies. It was crazy how thick they were," warns Patricia Y. about Cowboy Camp.
Water supply: All primitive camping around Angwin requires bringing your own water. "Not a easy campground to get to had a RV road is horrible no nearby water," cautions a camper at Cow Mountain Rec Area Dispersed.
Tips from RVers
Size limitations: Large RVs should avoid most dispersed sites near Angwin. "As long as you have a capable vehicle and are prepared to provide for your own needs, you'll be ready for Cow," advises Lori A. about Cow Mountain.
Leveling needs: Bring leveling blocks as most sites have uneven terrain. "We always manage to level out in our 23" Winnebago View. There is lots of open space so no crowding," reports Jorg F. at Cowboy Camp.
Road assessment: Walk access roads before committing with an RV. "I would recommend walking it first," suggests Todd N. about Lakeview Dispersed Campground when discussing finding the best spots.
