Mount Lowe Trail Campground

Within Angeles National Forest, Mount Lowe Trail Campground operates as a hike-in destination that requires commitment from visitors. The US Forest Service manages this free camping area, which sits accessible only on foot after a considerable uphill trek from multiple trailheads.

Campers reach the site through two main approaches: the longer route via Eaton Canyon with ample parking, or the shorter but more limited access from Cobb's Ranch at Lake Street's end. Vehicle access stops well before the campground itself, with locked gates controlling road entry from 8 PM to 6 AM. The actual hiking distance covers over five miles of uphill terrain, making this a destination for those prepared for substantial effort.

The campground provides basic amenities including toilets, picnic tables, and designated fire pits, though fire restrictions vary seasonally. No running water flows from taps, but reviewers mention finding seasonal water sources nearby. "No water, fountain is capped now," notes Anthony C., confirming the lack of reliable water infrastructure. Sites operate on a first-come, first-served basis across the camping area.

Weekend traffic from day hikers passes through regularly, while weeknight camping often provides solitude. The elevation and remote location create notably quiet conditions after dark. Campers planning visits should verify current fire restrictions and pack all necessary water for their stay.

Visitors often highlighted this hike-in campground's secluded location and scenic views. Guests commonly noted basic facilities like toilets and tables, but no running water. One major access concern involved locked gates.

Forget it.. you can’t get to it!

The road has a gate on it, which is locked 8pm-6am. That was day 1 (we slept in our car). Once past that gate, you’ll soon hit another, this one closed to all motorized vehicles. GPS says another 5.5 miles and 33 minutes (driving!) time to the campsite. As much as a lovely 5+ hour hike UP hill sounds, I think we’ll opt for a motel this time around. Details like this.. should be in the description.

Quiet

It was eerily quiet at night. We were the only ones there and can hear our own hearbeats laying there at night. We went in May this year so not much people around. Brand new toilet is nice as well. There was some flowing water still. Also found this vertebrae next to the table, moght have been a deer, not sure.

New toilet!

New outhouse built within the last year. There's no water right now but that could change after first rain or snow.

Stayed here last week & it's still great.

Great Hike In Campground

You can get here multiple ways but once you do it's totally worth it. Secluded campground with toilets, fire pits & many info plaques with photos from the old tavern on site. There's a stream nearby the Mount Lowe Summit Trail, also. Plenty of great sites to choose from.

Long Hike-Big Rewards

This is a hike in only campground that is secluded and a little spare. It has no running water but it does have facilities and tables ( first come, first serve). Fantastic views on a clear day and quite a few hikers pass through here on the weekend. Check on camp fires permitted (last time I was there ABSOLUTELY NO FIRES ALLOWED). Access through Eaton Canyon (the long way but plenty of parking, NOT OVERNIGHT! ) or Cobb's Ranch at the end of Lake Street….but there is only street parking here and I don't know what the restrictions are now. If you like hiking and scenery this is a great spot. Please pack out what you bring in. This hike is better in the cool seasons plus during the summer they bring vans full of kids up here for day outings.
