A mile-and-a-half drive down a winding paved road brings campers into a forested valley where Mill Creek flows alongside this 145-site campground. The descent from Highway 101 creates a sense of entering remote wilderness, though the facility operates as a busy state park destination during peak season. Sites cluster along two main loops, with some requiring short walks up steps to reach elevated camping areas.
The campground sits within second-growth redwood forest, where massive stumps from the original logging era dot the landscape between today's towering trees. Ferns and dense vegetation create natural barriers between closely spaced sites, offering privacy despite the compact layout. Veronica S. notes "flush toilets, running water, coin showers" among the amenities, with hot water available at 25 cents per minute. Bear boxes anchor every site, and camp hosts sell firewood for evening fires.
Creek access and nearby trails provide recreation opportunities, while the facility's location serves as a base for exploring the broader redwood region. Nicole L. reports "lots of blue jays, chipmunks and we saw deer" around the campground. RV accommodations include hookups for rigs up to 24 feet, though maneuvering larger units through the narrow roads requires care.
Cell service remains unavailable throughout the campground, though WiFi reaches from the ranger station uphill. The rough access road can challenge low-clearance vehicles, particularly after rain. Reservations help secure preferred sites during busy summer months, when families fill the loops and ranger programs operate from the small amphitheater.
Mill Creek works well for campers wanting established amenities within redwood habitat, accepting closer neighbors and limited connectivity in exchange for hot showers and convenient access to places to camp near Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park.
