Whisky Falls Campground

Drive-in sites at Whisky Falls Campground require navigating forest roads that can challenge standard vehicles, though the effort rewards campers with dispersed sites spread throughout Sierra National Forest. This US Forest Service campground operates seasonally from May through November, offering vault toilets and picnic tables as the primary amenities.

Individual campsites sit well apart from each other, providing natural privacy among the forest setting. The campground's minimalist approach means no potable water or electrical hookups, making it suitable for self-sufficient campers. Several reviewers mention the abundance of firewood available for collection, and campfires remain permitted throughout the season. Dogs accompany their owners freely, though leash requirements may apply during high fire danger periods.

The namesake waterfall lies approximately one mile from the camping area via hiking trail. "Hike past it for an even more beautiful sight to behold," suggests Alex L., noting additional scenic areas beyond the main falls. Bass Lake provides swimming opportunities within driving distance, while numerous dirt roads branch through the surrounding forest for exploration.

Recent fire activity temporarily closed the campground, with hazard tree removal completed by 2021. Campers should verify current conditions with the Bass Lake Ranger Station before traveling, as closures can occur during fire season. Early arrival helps secure preferred sites, as this formerly quiet location has gained popularity among families and repeat visitors over recent years.

Many visitors highlighted the spacious, private sites and peaceful forest setting perfect for families and pets. The campground offers excellent hiking access to waterfalls and off-road trails, though it's minimalist with basic facilities only.

Isolated Campground with Lots to Explore

There are a lot of backroads to explore in the area. The campground was on the edge of the 2020 Creek Fire. It was closed in 2021 and hazard trees were removed. I would expect it to open in 2022 but recommend calling the Bass Lake Ranger Station.

Best place ever

Let me start by saying it was worth driving six and a half hours to get here. We loved everything from the, isolated campgrounds, the off road trails to test our 4x4 trucks and how our dogs were free to explore with us. There is plenty of wood for your fires, shaded hiking when the sun was out and did I mention the whiskey falls? Beautiful!! Hike past it for an even more beautiful sight to behold. Bass lake is close by as well so you can take a dip to rinse off all the dust you kick up. Yosemite is nice but I prefer less people with a lot of activities.

Greatest campground ever!

This is a fantastic little campground my family has been coming to for years. We're working on our third generation of Whisky kids! The only bad thing is that here lately more people have discovered it and you've got to get up there early to get a site. Too bad we couldn't keep it secret forever, but that's the way it goes. The waterfall is a short hike away, and there are plenty of trails to hike during the day, as well as dirt roads to explore. Even if the campground is full there are a couple of "overflow" sites nearby. This is our happy place!

Fantastic privacy, with amazing falls and Bass Lake nearby

While this campground was closed in July due to the same fire that threatened Yosemite, the flames never reached within probably 15+ miles of this location, and remains safe now that the fire has been contained.

This campground is found a reasonable distance up in the Forest, and as such, offers a great deal of privacy. Individual sites are quite spread out; the only "service" is a vault toilet. It's a very minimalist campground, but the views nearby are worth it. And Whisky Falls itself, perhaps a mile away, is just utterly stunning.

Dogs are allowed, but definitely check fire restrictions and closures before traveling this way.

Do you love waterfalls?

This state park has something for everyone. It has some fun hikes out to some pretty incredible waterfalls. The lakes are stunning, and there are a LOT of campsites to choose from. I also appreciated the space they provide at campsites to store food that are bear proof. If you like to off-road there are plenty of two tracks , and if you don’t there are campsites for you too. The rangers in the station are helpful in finding the best place for your needs. We really enjoyed spending a weekend here.
